Does anyone here like My Morning Jacket? I wouldn't call them a jamband but they kinda get lumped in with them. I just started listening to them and I'm really impressed. I think I'll go see them when they're here in a couple weeks even though it's pretty pricey. I'd recommend checking them out.

The Dead and now Phish reuniting. This summer has lots of potential.
|
Those Hampton shows are going to be madness. If they both tour, the Phish tour will most likely attract all the low life jam scene druggies that took over the Dead tour in the 90's and then moved on to Phish when Jerry died. That way the Dead shows will be nothing be the real heads. Hopefully I catch them both though.
|
TBH I'd see Phish over The Dead now. It won't come down to that so I'm not worried, but if it was Phish vs. Dead 2009, I take Phish.
|
id go see the dead
but that's just me..and ive never listened to them before :P |
I plan on seeing both, there's no way the 2 of them would be in the same place at the same time. But if I had to choose, it would undoubtedly be the Dead. To be honest, I wouldn't be shocked if Phish put on the better show musically, but their music never really meant much to me, whereas the Dead changed my life.

So last night a few of my friends and I did robo and hung out in my friend Chris's room and listened to Dead live records all night.
It was my first time listening to them live (I love American Beauty and just ordered Workingman's Dead on vinyl). So ****ing good Fun night. |

I also have Europe '72, In The Dark and Kingfish by Bob Weir and Kingfish which are all great as well. I really need American Beauty on vinyl and a few others. But nothing sounds as good as the Dead on vinyl. |
yeah i have american beauty on vinyl and i just love the sound of it. It sounds live
the more vinyl i buy the more i love the sound. Listening to a cd just isnt the same for some reason. I can sit down and listen to a record but now I can't really do that with a cd |
Just picked up a ton of vinyl last night. Listening to Quicksilver Messenger Service debut album right now. So good. Gold And Silver is such a great jam.

This is so sick. I bet they'll announce a spring tour in early January.
So I botched going to Lotus last night (it was a two hour drive and there were other complications) and I didn't buy a ticket for Widespread in Milwaukee on 11/7, which some of my friends are going to, and is now sold out. I'm still gonna go to Milwaukee with them though and probably scope out the WSP lot scene and try to find a ticket but we'll see. Though I caught EOTO and Toubab Krewe earlier this month, locally, and both were sick shows. Robo, you going to any of the Phil-a-thon shows at the Nokia? Anyone else get any upcoming shows? NYE plans? I want to go to DSO in Baltimore but tickets are like $50 which is ridiculous. |
I'm not going to any of the Nokia Phil shows. It sucks but I'm at school. I might be going to San Francisco for NYE with Phil and Ratdog but I don't know, it's kind of tricky to pull off.
I got a few upcoming shows. Bob Dylan on Election Day. Cornmeal that Friday. Maybe 2 nights of Mule in November. I'll try to catch STS9 because Lunch always talks about how good they are. But I have to admit that I did miss Lotus last week. Dylan's the only one I have tickets for but hopefully I'll hit them all up. |
Lotus live is pretty ****ing cool
|
Yeah I probably should've gone. The problem with not owning a car is that concert venues that take 15 minutes to drive to take an hour by bus. And then the buses stop running pretty early during the week (Lotus was a Wednesday night) so you usually end up having to take a cab back which gets pricey. I paid $30 for YMSB but then had to pay $20 for a cab so it ended up costing a poopload. It really stops me from going to as many shows as I want to.
|
Yea that was tough on me last year. Fortunately this year more of my friends have cars. You should definitely catch STS9 if they are going to be anywhere around you, and Cornmeal is probably going to be a great show. I might see Mule in a few weeks too but I don't know, they're kind of boring.

Jesus Christ guys, Terrapin from 77/06/09 - Winterland is mindblowingly incredible. And yes, I realize that mindblowingly isn't a word. :)

Man, I think that show is my favorite Dead show ever. Seriously. The Half Step opener is the best I've ever heard (although 1977-11-06 Binghamton is close), the Music Never Stopped is great, Help>Slip>Franklin's is the best I've ever heard. And there is no better way to close a show than Estimated > St. Stephen > Not Fade Away > Drums > St. Stephen > Terrapin > Sugar Mags. May of '77 is truly spectacular, but I think this one tops all those. Maybe something from summer '73 is up there, but this is a really incredible show.
This cooks- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fg0kX_7HUWw&feature=related I've never really liked ALO that much but whenever I hear Dan Lebowitz play with another group I'm always really impressed. Same with Steve Adams. |
Yeah, that about sums it up. |
I'm listening to that Terrapin now.

Just discovered this thread, and a new reason to start posting somewhat consistently on these forums after being at sputnik for a while.
Anyway, I've really been getting into more jambands recently. I always loved the Grateful Dead and Phish, but have recently discovered (just in time for Chritsmas no less!) Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident, Steve Kimock Band, Jazz Mandolin Project, Assembly of Dust, Umphrey's Mcgee, etc. I just went to my library and found some Yonder Mountain String band CDs, which was a nice treat. So yeah, this is kind of a bump, and introduction into the thread, which itself can hopefully stay more active than it has been. |
I'm seeing Umphrey's on the 23 and 24 of January at the Fox and Fillmore!
I'm really excited for Mantis to come out, has anyone else heard the new single "Made To Measure" or something like that. It's really catchy! |
^Welcome
I saw DSO last night, they did 7/7/78 at Red Rocks. It was sweet. Tonight they're doing 7/8/78 (which is quite a bit better imo) but my parents won't let me go. The setlist for that show is so nuts too! I wish I could see it. But last night was sweet. Setlist for last night (7/7/78): Set 1: Jack Straw Candyman Me & My Uncle-> Big River Friend Of The Devil Cassidy Tennessee Jed Passenger Peggy-O The Music Never Stopped Set 2: Cold Rain & Snow Beat It On Down The Line Scarlet Begonias-> Fire On The Mountain Dancin' In The Streets-> Drums-> Not Fade Away-> Nobody's Fault But Mine-> Not Fade Away-> Black Peter-> Around & Around Encore: U.S. Blues Johnny B. Goode Filler: How Sweet It Is Donna was in the house and with them for a number of songs. But unfortunately not the whole show. Specifically, on The Music Never Stopped and Scarlet Begonias, I was wondering why Donna was dancing on the side of the stage instead of singing with them. Lisa was there and she does the Donna thing pretty well I guess, but I'd rather hear Donna. Musically, Dark Star Orchestra was just outstanding. The Jack Straw started off pretty average but really caught on fire during the solo. The first set in general was very hot, maybe better than the 2nd. Peggy O was beautiful and Music Never Stopped was nuts. Cassidy and Passenger too... great versions. Set 2 had a crazy Scarlet Fire. The rest was kind of up and down. Johnny B Goode sounded a little repetitive and boring after Around and Around and US Blues. Drums was killer with a bunch of roadies and other people coming out and forming a drum circle. Space looked super cool with just Rob Barroco (piano) and John (fake Jerry) jamming alone, but the crowd was so talkative you could barely hear. Not a very good crowd, but we met a couple super cool older heads and the music was nuts. |

I actually like Donna to be honest. I think she has a good voice (although often out of tune) and sometimes, her voice really works with the music. Besides Theresa Williams (Larry Campbell's wife, sings with Phil now) I like Donna more than any of the other girl singers dead bands have tried like lisa in DSO and Joan Osbourne with Phil a couple years ago. And Donna just has an amazing stage presence. She's just so happy to be on stage and seems so genuine that I really enjoyed seeing her with DSO and wish she sang on almost every song instead of about half of them which she did.

Listening to the some of the shows String Cheese did at their run at the Warfield in March of 01. Some of this is really becoming my favorite String Cheese material.
And just as a sidenote, since all the Grateful Dead soundboards got taken off the archive, is there any other site that has Dead sounboards up for download? I have many of the classic shows, its just most of them are AUD and I'd rather have the better soundboard quality. If anyone has a source, could they please drop a link. |
etree.org. bittorrent is all the rage.
|
You can still get sbds off of Archive...
Just click on the link to whatever show you want in sbd form, then change the word details to download in the address bar and you're set. |
Sweet, thanks for that trick.
