Quick! Someone cast a Level 10 ''don't ask silly questions'' spell!

:)

Trev 07-23-2005 03:59 PM

Sorry to interrupt all this roleplaying, but power metal is becoming a favourite of mine, and I'd like to ask the experts what decent power metal bands I'm missing out on, as I feel like expanding my CD collection some more.

My current PM collection consists of:

Angra
Avantasia
Blind Guardian
Dragonforce
Dragonland
Dream Evil
Edguy
Gamma Ray
Hammerfall
Helloween
Iced Earth (power metal?)
Kamelot
Lost Horizon
Manowar
Rhapsody
Running Wild
Sonata Arctica
Stratovarius
Therion

If it seems like too much to ask, it doesn't matter. I would post this in the recommendations thread but this thread would yield better results.

Shattered_Future 07-23-2005 04:05 PM

Niiiiiiightwish!

Nightwish is not true power metal...however, they do the job nicely.

Starter albums: for more symphonic, Once. Otherwise, Wishmaster.

Also, Finntroll has power metal elements to them...

Stoic 07-23-2005 04:07 PM

You've already checked out a great amount of bands (I havent :p) so you have a strong background.

I would STRONGLY suggest:
Sabaton (see upload on page 68)
Slough Feg (see upload on page 68 and even more on page 60)
Elvenking (see upload on page 67)
Tad Morose
Persuader
Wuthering Heights (see Steerpike's thread in the index)

Ah, I actually have Nightwish's back catalogue, I just didn't list them as I wasn't sure if they were regarded as power metal.

A mistake on my behalf, my apologies, thanks for the suggestion though, I appreciate it.

Brew 07-23-2005 04:12 PM

I recommend...

Ensiferum
Wintersun
Human Fortress
Dungeon
Galloglass

Shattered_Future 07-23-2005 04:12 PM

As long as you like Nightwish... :p

If you're willing to forgo true power metal vocals for harsh vocals, Children Of Bodom, Norther, Kalmah and Wintersun are also good.

Stoic 07-23-2005 04:14 PM

I love Ensiferum :)

Shattered_Future 07-23-2005 04:15 PM

Ensiferum is great...

I should finish listening to their cds...fell asleep listening to it.
I love Ensiferum :)
They're brilliant, I can't seem to find their s/t album though anywhere :(

I was annoyed about missing out on seeing them a few months ago, they played in London around 1 week before I checked their tour schedule :upset:

NP: Ferrum Aeternum

it happens to me too when I'm tired (yes besides Hate Eternal :p) even with bands I like. Then I wake up in cold sweat. I hate it :upset:

Brew 07-23-2005 04:22 PM

Ahhh they're selling copies of their re-released demos cd again, but I can't afford a copy and don't really like the look of their mail-order service...

Bah.

Jebus thats alot of music!

I may consider ordering from them sometime soon...but I'm un-sure as to how much postage would be to the UK etc...

Stoic 07-23-2005 04:35 PM

yeah, they have thousands of cheap CDs. I really know nothing about world wide postage though. If you see something you've been looking for for a long time it's worth the money I suppose. I spent 32 euros (CD + postage + postage for sending hidden cash via registered mail) for a single Slough Feg album :D

/wish I could do the same for some original Psychotic Waltz albums...

Rising 07-23-2005 05:53 PM

Whats power metal exactly ?

Terrorzone 07-23-2005 06:12 PM

Ugh, I just heard Mrs. God. Sounds like its going to be another Rabbit Don't Come Easy.
Whats power metal exactly ?
Power metal is an outgrowth of Speed Metal. The lyrics are usually what define the genre, since they focus on war, mythology, heavy metal, bravery, honour, and death. Basically, it's Heavy Metal for D&D folks. Great genre, though.

Well, they tried

I sometimes have urges to paint them all again, but I've not actually got any paint :(

I used to play loads though when I was a kid.

Stoic 07-24-2005 04:42 AM
Well, they tried
for god's sake, what were they thinking when they named their album Keeper of the Seven Keys - The Legacy?!? Well, let's hope the rest of it is not like the single (hey I'd also said that about the new Dissection!)...yeah right...

Lord Abortion 07-24-2005 08:14 AM

The rabbit..., by helloween was bloody awful, that might be the reason I never got into the better albums I didn't buy it though thankfully

Skeksis 07-24-2005 08:42 AM
Heavy Metal for D&D folks

It's also characterized by being very melodic.

Shattered_Future 07-24-2005 09:20 AM

Usually has a speeded up tempo and extensive use of the double bass pedal as well.

I got the Helloween Treasure Chest (their greatest hits)...only Helloween album I need. :D

Stoic 07-24-2005 10:11 AM

I cant understand this Helloween dislike. First 3 and The Dark Ride at least are excellent

/waits for Alex's article

Steerpike 07-24-2005 10:17 AM

The article will be up soon. It will likely have to be in two parts since I tried to get in as much information as I could, so wait for the second post.
