I'm not going to college.

Tyler 08-10-2007 07:16 PM
I'm not going to college.
Neither am I, I'm going to University.

That's also a pretty hefty statement to make at 14. Give it a few years. It's not for everyone but dont rule **** out so early.

Riva 08-10-2007 07:16 PM

I think the only area where Australia is somewhat disadvantaged, in terms of University, when compared to the States is money-wise. Because almost everyone does HECS, which means the government pays for us and we pay them back when we earn over a certain amount, interest free, none of the Universities really have the sort of ready cash that allows for multiple scholarships.

Nah, nah. I don't have to. I get college level training through my 4 years of high school next year. At age 18 when I get out of high school, I will be able to have my own company.

I'm getting money from the Government (way too much actually) but I have to pay them back.

Our smaller universities arent government sponsored so the tuition for those is like, 50-60k. It's insane.

LifeInABox 08-10-2007 07:19 PM

Tuition for private schools around MA are upwards of 80k.

I'm not saying you have to, but to assume you're getting a university level education in high school is ridiculous.

Plus are you getting a degree? Because sadly that piece of paper makes a lot of difference.

LifeInABox 08-10-2007 07:23 PM

No, it's a technical high school, hence, you get out of 12th grade and can go right out on to the job without a degree.

Tyler 08-10-2007 07:24 PM
No, it's a technical high school, hence, you get out of 12th grade and can go right out on to the job without a degree.
But that would more or less lead to apprenticeships rather than university anyways.

We have technical schools here but, like, okay. You can't go to Central Tech here and study robotics and graduate to work for a huge robotics firm.

Deth 08-10-2007 07:27 PM

Technical schools might give you the tools, but unfortunately companies like to see 4 year degrees.

Tyler 08-10-2007 07:28 PM
Technical schools might give you the tools, but unfortunately companies like to see 4 year degrees.
Or apprenticeship certs.

Something.

I have to join in with Tyler on the doubt train. Even if you go to technical school, it won't be the same as doing tertiary study at a technical college or University or community college or what have you. Sure, you might be able to graduate and get the job you want, but you won't get the level of training, or the degree, that you would through attending a tertiary institution.

LifeInABox 08-10-2007 07:29 PM

You can work in the electrical field here, do your for years, get time on the job through co-op, then work for the company you co-op'd with full time straight out of high school.

Riva 08-10-2007 07:30 PM

Yeah, I'm not doubting that. Australia has a similar set-up, it's called school-based apprenticeships. The fact is, you're not going to be graduating from High School as a fourth-year apprentice. Maybe a second-year if you're lucky.

LifeInABox 08-10-2007 07:31 PM

Hey man, I'm only saying what I know. A friend of mine did it and was telling me about. Now he owns his own business and is making upwards of $100 an hour.

Yay for me, 3000.

Co-Op is a standard course here, it doesnt mean anything.

I doubt he went straight from high school into his own business. I think you might be exaggerating just a tad, and if you're not, then it's better we dashed your expectations now rather than 3 years down the track.

To paraphrase Auric von Goldfinger:

You know nothing, Mr. Hbp.

No, he went straight from high school to his co-op'd business, then much later, has his own business. Come now, sir. You must keep up, now!
Co-Op is a standard course here, it doesnt mean anything.
Do you get to do co-op and get paid instead of going to school for two weeks?

Tyler 08-10-2007 07:40 PM
Do you get to do co-op and get paid instead of going to school for two weeks?
No, it's not legal for them to pay you because it's a course requirement.

It's still the same exact thing. You take co-op and you work somewhere in your field of choice.

Riva 08-10-2007 07:41 PM
Yes.

Dude, stop trying to impress us. You're not waltzing down the magic path to fame, fortune and glory. You're working towards the exact same thing countless other tradesmen are working towards. Just like I'm working towards the exact same thing countless other Uni students are working towards. There is no easy path, and the sooner you realise this, the easier it'll be on you.

Unless you give it all up and go work at a mine here in Australia as a dump truck driver for $100,000 a year.

Deth 08-10-2007 07:44 PM

Whoa, that sounds like a career path. I need a ticket to Australia.

Tyler 08-10-2007 07:44 PM

All I'm trying to say is don't rule out post-secondary education at such a young age.
Unless you give it all up and go work at a mine here in Australia as a dump truck driver for $100,000 a year.
That's like when young dudes go to work at the oil rigs in Alberta. Amazing money but lots of injuries, and it's hard work.

Riva 08-10-2007 07:45 PM

Yeah, you can, for minimal training, be a dump truck driver and earn more than a graduate with a BSc. :p

It's a 12 hour, mind numbingly boring day though.

Why would I want to impress people I hardly know?

C.O.A. 08-10-2007 09:11 PM

they'll never be quite as soft as they seem
who is COA

thats great that it only took you 6 minutes to come up with that hilarious little add-on.

okay i'm done trying to be funny.

'tis pointless.

Non-conformity by conformity. Confuse the masses with your idiocy!

antihippy 08-10-2007 09:44 PM

is there such a thing as non-conformity anyway? i find that everyone conforms to something.

saw hot shots: part duex last night. funny in the "lol wut" kind of way.

tastexmyxscythe 08-10-2007 10:10 PM

Hi everyone, /waves
Had a cool day. Spent most of it at a friend's house playing Guitar Hero II and jamming our own Punk Rock-ish version of Jerry C's Canon Rock, me on lead. w00t. Classical pieces are such fun to screw around with on an electric guitar, lemme tell ya.

NP: Cradle of Filth - Lord Abortion

LifeInABox 08-10-2007 10:11 PM

I suck at GH II :upset:

tastexmyxscythe 08-10-2007 10:12 PM

So do I!!! /highfive

I managed to kick *** at Thunderhorse, The Light That Blinds and Carry On Wayward Son on easy, though.

Dr. Jake Destructo 08-10-2007 10:14 PM

well non-conformity can be looked at in two ways.

1) literally, it's virtually impossible to be a non-conformist.
2) non-conformity can mean rejecting the broadest of societal norms and creating a modified belief system.

granted, when we're talking about anarchy, that's a different thing, but for the most part, i think non-conformity is a misunderstood concept. then again, there are a lot of people who try to buck these norms and attach to something else for the sake of appearing different, but there are also a lot of quieter people who are actually true to themselves and don't give a **** about advertising their difference.

Tyler 08-10-2007 10:14 PM

Mozarts 25th sounds really badass on electric guitar

LifeInABox 08-10-2007 10:14 PM

I can do the Light That Blinds on Hard, as well as most of the rest of the game, but I can only do Six on Medium :upset:

tastexmyxscythe 08-10-2007 10:16 PM

Six is HARD, dude. I probably can't do it on easy.
And I take it back. I'm able to do Thunderhorse on medium. :-P

Dr. Jake Destructo 08-10-2007 10:21 PM

so i hung out with my grandparents today and i think i have a newfound respect for going to garage sales. so much cool stuff, it's unbelievable.
