A friend of mine sung there in a choir, and couldn't stop talking about the acoustics of the place... Hats off to the architect, that's for sure.

PoltikBass 07-11-2004 01:59 PM

I wish I could take some of your classes, they sound really cool. But I'm a little over 4 years old. :upset: Can I still be in your class?? :D

UncleJam 07-11-2004 02:02 PM

Just reading this thread and all the things you've discussed, LightRaven, has really gotten me thinking about life and what I really want to pursue. My parents are trying to force me into an Information Technology major (and I hate computers). I would rather struggle being a musician than make loads of money doing something I hate.

acexxxoasis 07-11-2004 02:02 PM

Light raven through your subtle dropping ins on the double bass threads i decided to pick it up and its great fun thanks yah heather!

Whatever you do don't go into a career you hate. Worst move you can make.

UncleJam 07-11-2004 02:11 PM

^ Yep, there are way too many people like that in the world now. It's the biggest fear I have.

Wintermute 07-11-2004 02:13 PM

I vowed never to dedicate myself to a career I didn't love after watching my dad come home furious so often. Especially as he seems to find it hard to keep his temper to himself.

UncleJam 07-11-2004 02:15 PM

My father is the same way. He's been stuck in a job he hates for 11 years and it pains me to even think about ending up that way.

What do you wish to do with your life anyways, Wintermute?

Wintermute 07-11-2004 02:21 PM

It's an interesting question. I'm really not sure. I'm going to do this degree in Biology, and if any of the specialisations turn out to really fascinate me, as I think they may, then I'll likely pursue a scientific career. You have to be carefull doing that, though. I did a work experience in a Pathogenics and Biochemistry lab, and it was one of the most exhausting and boring fortnights of my life. Bench science isn't for me, I don't think.

I'm still looking around and researching alternatives right now, but one of the things I'm considering is a sound engineer, or similar music related disciplines.

I'm basically undecided as yet. I know what I don't want (an office job, a bench science job, anything with too much repetition or beaurocracy) but I don't quite know what I do want yet.

 Only a few of my classes are for younger kids.. the rest are for people your age ;)

Whodo went to school for acoustic engineering.... he now works for Boeing... might want to ask him about the field and how his schooling was.

Uh... his email is around here somewhere... I think you can find it in the rules thread.

Wintermute 07-11-2004 02:24 PM

Thanks for the tip, I'll do just that.

I'm really enjoying this thread, it's good to have a proper conversation on the forums.

Interesting, I looked a major in Biology (specifically Marine Biology) but all the math classes is what killed it for me. The sciences are a really interesting thing to major in, though.

Heh, I don't think anyone wants to end up with an office job... that just happens.

I have a friend who's interested in sound engineering too. He's heading out to California to work on that.

Wintermute 07-11-2004 02:28 PM

Luckily I'm also pretty good at maths. I also have an A level in that. The course I'm going on doesn't need any maths above A level so the extra maths classes are for those who didn't take the A level.

UncleJam 07-11-2004 02:31 PM

That's excellent, and really good for you. Right now, I'm taking a College Algebra course and doing horribly in it. I just can't wait to get out of these God awful liberal studies courses and start working on my major.

I'm surprised there are so many college students in the bass site. I've looked at other places on this forum and they all seem to be 13 year old kids. I'm feeling right at home. ;)

Raiven 07-11-2004 02:32 PM
I suppose so....

wait.. what did you do that pissed me off

LR
You know ages ago there kinda was a picture.....

:upset:

Wintermute 07-11-2004 02:35 PM

How far does the maths course go? It's when you start integrating complex trigonometrical expressions by substitution that you know you have abandoned all reason.

Kibuddy 07-11-2004 02:35 PM

Hehheh, just like me to miss the biggest thread on the page... woops..

Yeah, anyways... I have pretty much no clue who anyone here is, seeing as I've only been hanging around here for all of a month... But, after reading through all of the posts, I'm starting to get a feel for the forums.

Wintermute 07-11-2004 02:51 PM

It's always a good idea to get a good feel for the forums before you start mouthing off too much - good on you.

UncleJam 07-11-2004 02:51 PM
How far does the maths course go? It's when you start integrating complex trigonometrical expressions by substitution that you know you have abandoned all reason.

It goes to Trig, and beyond I believe. I couldn't imagine how something like 'Marine' Biology would require so much math. I can excel in sciences... it's just all that math.

Wintermute 07-11-2004 02:54 PM

Trig's not so bad. Just watch out for the worlds of Trig and calculus colliding. It gets nasty.

What do you need it all for? What is there in the ocean that requires Trig?

UncleJam 07-11-2004 02:58 PM

^ Haha, I have no idea. Smart fish, maybe? I was a bit surprised when I met with the Bio major and asked about that. The thing is, it's a major in Biology but I would specialize in Marine Biology.

All I know now is that I've switched my major to Music Performance (well, I'm going to) and it doesn't require anything beyond the basic liberal studies mathematics classes.

Whew :thumb:

Wintermute 07-11-2004 03:02 PM

Good for you.

What are you going to do with the Major in Performance?

UncleJam 07-11-2004 03:05 PM

Hopefully get work in studios, work as backup on CDs for bands, singers, etc. Basically, it would be fun to be a bassist-for-hire. ;)
I would also like to move to the city and play clubs. That's been my dream for the longest time.

LightRaven really sheaded some light for me on the whole subject in this thread. It's nice to have this kind of input on the forums.

Wintermute 07-11-2004 03:07 PM

You should talk to Coffeekiller, he's done some session work, I believe. Yeah, it's handy to have more experienced people on hand to share this kind of stuff.

gaslight 07-11-2004 03:09 PM

^ Yeah, Coffee is really good for that. He gave me some pointers on what course I should take and why.

Such a good guy.

UncleJam 07-11-2004 03:10 PM

Thanks, I'll see about that.

Does CoffeeKiller have AIM?

By the way, what is your main specialization you want to work for in Biology?

Wintermute 07-11-2004 03:11 PM

heehee... I can see it now... 'Yes! You have at last tracked down the lost City of Atlantis, and we will share with you all the lore of our kind... IF you can integrate cotxsecy + (secy)^(-1).cotx between limits of pi/4 and 3 pi! MWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!'

Ahem. Enough with the advanced mathematics for Marine Biologists...

I'm not sure yet, but part of the point of the first year of the course is to help you decide. I'm thinking possibly Neurology, or Psychology/Ethology.

Wintermute 07-11-2004 03:14 PM

Not sure about that, but he certainly has MSN, and he probably won't mind me giving you it : mr_coffeekiller@hotmail.com

ROFL! I should have told them that when they handed me the sheet of all the mathematics courses required for Marine Biology.
I'm not sure yet, but part of the point of the first year of the course is to help you decide. I'm thinking possibly Neurology, or Psychology/Ethology.
Very nice. Yea, the first year proves tough but at least you get to decide on what you would be interested in by taking 'experimental' classes, so-to-speak.

Neurology seems interesting, though. I would think there is a big demand for it now with all the diseases that afflict people now regarding the nervous system.

UncleJam 07-11-2004 03:18 PM

Wintermute 07-11-2004 03:32 PM

Yeah, diseases like Alzheimers and Autism are getting to be taken very seriously, and there's a lot of work to be done there... woah, this topic has gone full circle, that's how we got onto this topic in the first place...

mr_coffeekiller 07-11-2004 03:33 PM

People giving out my MSN like candy eh? no probs... I'll be on all day wed thru to fri maybe so it's all good ;)

but for just now, I'm going to retire... god night all. And remember my "need a challenge" thread!

Wintermute 07-11-2004 03:36 PM

Good, good, he didn't mind much!
