Unfortunately not, thats why I asked about similiar music. I doubt they even have one out yet :/

rokaholic 11-09-2005 04:30 PM

well, if you like the sound of organs which is what i'm big into, along with some other instruments, then check out:

-Black Talk! - by Charles Earland (Organ, Sax i think)
-Medeski Martin and Wood (Drums, Organ, Bass, lots of other instruments)
-Drop Trio (Organ & some other stuff)
-John Scofield (Jazz Guitar & other instruments)
-Momentum - by Joshua Redman (organ, sax i think, really good)
-Head Hunters, & Thrust - by Herbie Hancock
-Soulive (Organ, Sax, other stuff)

thats mostly the type of music, and who i listen to for jazz right now, i hope to expand my jazz collection a lot more tho

if you find out any other good bands send a p.m.

Det_Nosnip 11-17-2005 12:34 AM

I'm looking to get into Keith Jarrett. I remember liking what I heard from him in my jazz history class, but I can't remember what it was in particular that I heard. Piano trio tends to be my favorite outfit, but solo piano can be nice as well, if it's interesting. I guess what I'm looking for is the "classic" Jarrett....what he is famous for and what pieces/albums set him apart as unique.
hoping someone here can suggest a group that has good upright bass in it, or just sounds somewhat like medeski, martin, & wood or the bad plus.
Oooh, those are fantastic bands.

Cam90 11-28-2005 05:56 PM

Ok I really havn't heard that much jazz playing. I mostly listen to metal/rock type music. I have recently got into Paul Gilbert I just heard the song "Six Billion People", and I can't stop listening to it I love the jazz like playing in the song. I want to get into more jazz, so could someone reccomend some bands or artists that sound sort of like the song or similar? Or reccomend me some jazz with awsome guitar playing.

Thanks

Sorry guys about this being out of topic, but for reason i cant post a new threat and i'm in a hurry.

Does anyone know of an American or European singer or band that have use some spanish words on their lyrics besides U2? I know there are lots of them, but I cant think of one right now and cant find any on the net. I'm writing a paper and need this info asap.
Thanks. I just need the name, song, and lyrics.

Det_Nosnip 12-06-2005 12:15 AM
Random recommendation: Check out Keith Jarrett's inside out. Awesome improv jazz trio.
 I was about to ask for recommendations on Jarrett!! Anything else?

porkpie 12-07-2005 12:51 PM
Not that this has anything to do with any of the above posts, but for future reference, the best orchestrated jazz album of all time is The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady, by Charles Mingus. Definitely the most brilliant album I've ever heard.
I have to agree with Zappa that it may be slightly absurd to assert this is "the best orchestrated jazz album of all time", but, then again, can you think of something better? it amazes me how great this album is. Mingus was a god -- probably my favorite 20th century composer, actually. Blues and Roots is another of my favorite albums of his. The closest contemporary I can think of to Mingus is William Parker, although he gets a bit freer. In particular, I'd recommend Parker's work with The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra -- check out The Mayor of Punkville.

anyone know any trash / funk bands ..or just like more hardcore bands with funk influence: like infectious grooves, old chili peppers, 311, some suicidal tendencies, fishbone

Det_Nosnip 12-11-2005 12:10 AM

This isn't really the place for this, but....

Aghora - at least on their self titled. Malone+Reinert =
Early Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E, etc.

CaptainWaits 12-12-2005 12:43 PM

Hey I'm looking for any recommendations of bands, those similar to "The Bad Plus", and "Medeski Martin and Wood". Thanks!

As well as recommendations similar to bands such as "John Scofield", and the newer releases of "Joshua Redman" (Elastic, Momentum). Thanks again!

pianoplyr77 12-13-2005 06:22 PM

My friend told me about a bebop trio, drums, bass, and led by the piano player, whose name I can't remember. All I know is that they did a cover of a radiohead song and are fairly modern. Can anyone help me out?

The Bad Plus.
The Bad Plus.
Which radiohead song did they cover?

pianoplyr77 12-16-2005 06:29 PM

It wasn't them, their name was the ___________ (piano player's name) trio.

DemBonez 12-17-2005 01:30 AM

I'll try to answer some questions.
 I was about to ask for recommendations on Jarrett!! Anything else?
The Köln Concert, Changeless, Whisper Not, Standards Vol. 1. He's also really good on Charles Lloyd's Forest Flower: Charles Lloyd at Monterey.
I have to agree with Zappa that it may be slightly absurd to assert this is "the best orchestrated jazz album of all time", but, then again, can you think of something better?
I take it you don't appreciate what Don Sebesky does then? Or Sun Ra? Or a couple guys by the name of Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, and Benny Goodman? While The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady is nice, all of these guys were doing stuff that was equally as nice. Can you think of orchestrated jazz better than Ellington's Far East Suite or Goodman's Carnegie Hall? Superlatives are the dumbest things of all time.
anyone know any trash / funk bands ..or just like more hardcore bands with funk influence: like infectious grooves, old chili peppers, 311, some suicidal tendencies, fishbone
What this has to do with jazz/funk, I don't know, but check out the Screaming Headless Torsos, Faith No More, and David Fiuczynski. There are more, I'm just not versed in this area at all.

Bad Plus are pretty unique as far as I can see. Acoustic Ladyland may be a good choice, but they are different. Maybe Soulive for MMW. Scofield's got his contemporaries like Bill Frisell, David Stryker, and Mike Stern to deal with. There's Steve Khan as well, he's got that cheesy fusion guitar thing going too. Check out Mark Turner, Chris Potter, and James Carter for your Redman fix.

The Brad Mehldau Trio. That Radiohead song is off his The Art Of The Trio, Vol 3: Songs. Besides his poorly named albums, he plays some damn good music. Just imagine Bill Evans with less definition on his face.

Check out The Funky Meters.

They have a lot of good funky grooves with a little keyboard and guitar added in at times. A lot of their songs, are mainly just one funky repeated guitar riff so you might get bored.

Also Stark Reality
http://myspace.com/montystark

they're listed on the internet there and you can listen to 4 of their songs. They were more experimental and sort of jazz-rock fusion. They were kind of an underground act apparently and unfortunately they only have one album that's still available.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers have a lot of Funk to them sure they aren't really considered funk. But listen to funky monks and tell me thats not funk. John Frusciante can play some mean funk. PERIOD!
Yeah, I am the Red Hot Chili Peppers' biggest fan, belive it or not, but through the Freaky Styley era up 'till alot of bloodsugersexmagik, it was infact funk/rock. Flea has a funky *** bass style and John can play some mean funk guitar.

Yeah, I can totally agree with you. I love all the stuff off of Mothers Milk. Some of that stuff is just hardcore/funk/rock.

THEY DONT  !? So wait, are you trying to tell me that punk rock classisc off of mothers milk, isnt hardcore? Hmmmm..... Whatever, if you say so then I guess they have absolutely no hardcore influence :thumb: Anyone else have something to say about them not being hardcore?
-Biz

EdBanger 01-02-2006 04:47 AM

They have hardly any hardcore influence.
Punk is Punk, Hardcore is Hardcore.
Hardcore is heavier punk. Punk influnce but not hardcore influence.

Looking for worldbeat funk or jazz, in the vein of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, or this song by Resin.

Suggestions?

omgwtfboogie 01-24-2006 06:02 PM

Is their a quantity of jazz musicians/bands that is considered rather avant garde or really, really out there? I've been getting into weirder and weirder music on one side of my spectrum, and jazz music on the other side so I was wondering if there was something that could serve as a bridge between the two. I know I'm being vague by wanting something "weird", but half the fun I guess would be seeing what everyone thinks is weird.

(I also realize that this post isn't exactly what was designed for this thread, but I'm not knowledgeable as everyone else apparently is..)

I'm into pretty strange music and I'm really really digging Jaga Jazzist, though they're more fusion (and sound a lot like electronic music).

http://www.jagajazzist.com/v2/mp3.php

Samarai Celestial was Sun Ra's drummer (according to the link) and his music is even stranger than Sun Ra's.

http://www.epitonic.com/artists/samaraicelestial.html

That's all I can think of at the moment.

terry_bozzio_wanna_be 01-25-2006 03:55 PM
