the meaning behind Sum 41 is that they started the band 41 days into the summer

and it has been rumored that blink 182 is named that because blink was the name of tom's neighbors dog and in the movie scarface they say the "F" word a total of 182 times no one is sure if this is true though

They were orignally named Blink. There was another band named Blink, so Blink got pissed that Blink stole their name, and Blink threatened legal action on Blink or something. That's when the whole 182 thing came in for Blink.

Wrong. Lynyrd Skynyrd was originally named Leonard Skinnard (I think that's how his name was spelt) after Leonard Skinnard, their gym coach. They later changed it 2-3 times and ended up with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Led Zeppelin came from, as rock not roll stated, Keith Moon saying Jimmy Page's new band would go up like a lead zeppelin. Obviously a lead zeppelin won't go up, but the band did indeed succeed. :D

here are some: bucknaked and the bare bottom boys, sausage, colonel les claypool and the fearless flying frog brigade, limp bizkit (the names not really strange... its the meaning behind it)

I noticed that a lot of people in this thread had mentioned Blink 182 as being a weird band name, mainly because they had no idea what the 182 stands for. This is where they really got their name:

It started in San Diego, with Tom DeLonge being in a band called "Big Oily Men", which was less a band and more Tom playing music with whoever he could coax into it. Then he met up with Mark Hoppus and Scott Raynor, who decided they were serious about making a band. They called themselves "Duck Tape" for a while, but then a few days later Tom decided that they were going to be known as "Blink". The name had no significance, and Tom just thought that it sounded cool, and it stuck. However, Mark, Tom and Scott did not know that there was already another band named "Blink" in existence, an Irish techno band that noone had heard of. The Irish "Blink" did not want like the idea of having to share their name, so they filed a cease-and-desist order to prevent Mark, Tom and Scott from using the name "Blink". The San Diego boys did not want to get involved with a court battle, but they also did not want to give up the name "Blink" entirely, because that's how they were known in the San Diego punk music scene. In order to differentiate themselves from the Irish techno band "Blink", the San Diego band just decided to add a number to the end of their name. The number 182 was chosen completely at random, thus the band became known as "Blink 182".

The band has gotten a little creative over the years, and they have made up some explanations about where they got the 182. Some of these explanations include:
- 182 pounds is Mark's ideal weight
- 182 was the number of miles between Mark's house and his girlfriend's
- 182 was the number of Mark's grandpa's race car
- 182 was the number of Mark's grandpa's boat in World War II
- 182 was the number of times Al Pacino says the f-word in the movie "Scarface"
- The eighteenth letter of the alphabet is "R". The second letter of the alphabet is "B", so 18+2 = RB, which stands for Rancho Bernardo, where Mark and Scott lived for years.

There you have it. The origin of 182. It is all true, as most of that came from their book, "Tales From Beneath Your Mom".
