The man plays a Warwick! :amaze: |
Looks interesting. I still don't quite "get" the design, but I'll wait to see it all decked out and in playing position to pass judgment. The build quality looks ace.
+1 I don't really understand why the bass has to have wings, but it still looks great.... |

Rep'd. But seriously, this is going to turn out good. |

I don't really understand why the bass has to have wings, but it still looks great....
I do like the designs of the NS and similar EUB's, but I felt that I wanted to something other than a glorified bat with strings, hence the body. Plus the fact that I am adding more tonewood in the form of the bubinga is not really a bad thing in my view. :thumb: |
Fair enough. The proportioning seems a little big from the pics, but it is had to tell without everything on it.
Personally, I prefer just the stick with strings design. Yay for portability. |

I wanted that, big bottom :p The wings are a little large, you are not misjudging that, but it was deliberate considering this will sit on a stand and not be played like a normal bass. |
Wow, can't wait to see it finalised, looking brilliant already :D
Good job man, :thumb: |
It looks so good! Keep it up with the working/updates.

let me guess you got an Opel? (Its the only brand in SA that I really know, other than Mercs)
Nope, went with Honda this time round. Got a Jazz aka Fit 1.5 Vtec in Silver. Great little car. Right, as promised some update photos. |
Well it has indeed been a while since I posted any photos of the progress on this project, in part due to organising a new car and selling old one, which is now all wrapped up.
On to the pictures. A front shot of the project as it currently stands. A rear shot of the project as it currently stands. A close up of the front. A close up of the rear. This is where most of the work of late has been taking place. I have been shaping the upper horn area and tapering it to blend into the body. I have also flattened the raised piece so that the neck core now sits fluch with the wings. It looks a lot better for it I feel. |
And two final shots to show the tapering at the rear of the bass.
There is still a fair bit to be done here but it is begining to take shape. Close up shot of the tapering. Angled shot of the tapering. You can see how the neck core now sits flush with the wings. |
is it me or is there a rather large depression on the back of the neck?
|
Looks great so far.
Mike: Yeah I think there is. Also how are you finishing it? True Oil? and congrats on the Jazz I used to get driven to school in one, very nice. |
is it me or is there a rather large depression on the back of the neck?
There is a bit of a depression, partly accidental and partly deliberate. I will still be shaping the neck, and it adds a good tactile point of reference. |
cool, was not trying to drag it down man was just wondering if my eyes were playing a trick on me lol :)
|
Some more photos for the masses, photobucket was being difficult over the weekend, hence the lack of uploading on my part.
On to the pics: Just an overview of the project, mainly the shaping of the join between the neck core and the single cut wing. Close up. Extreme close up, should note the lack of "dent" from before, in part due to further shaping of the neck. Finally aview looking down the neck to the body to show the "hollow ground" effect rather than the 45 degree slope of before. And there you have it. Next step will most likely be routing for the pickups and placement of the bridge. |
WickedAwesome.
|
Looking good shaun. i'm looking forward to some sound clips.
|
Looking hot. That last pic makes the top wing look twice the thickness of the bottom wing.
|
Any updates? I read this thread all the way through from the first page and now I'm hooked. i want to see this baby finished and with hardware!
|
Why build an EUB with NO upright characteristics?
|

Well tomorrow is a public holiday on this side and I am taking the Friday off, so should be able to get a fair but of work done. To Low End: Pretty much because I played a Dean Pace Bass which is a bit of a bastarised electric upright and I really liked the feel, except for the fact that it looks like a plank of wood, so I decided to build it to my specs. At the end of the day it is not a true EUB, but does contain some characteristics thereof. |
It looks like a normal electric, but far too big and heavy to use as one.

Google the Dean Pace Bass, then you will see the concept behind this. |
Looks awsome man.
Keep up the good work! |
