I don't like the fact that Waters took over the band.

robo2448 11-13-2005 06:57 PM

I like The Final Cut. Good songwriting, but instrumentally it's definitely Floyd's weakest and essentially a Waters solo album.

YouGottaBeCrazy 11-13-2005 07:06 PM

I like The Final Cut. It's pretty good, IMO. However, I think Waters took over the band about the time of Animals. Or am I wrong with that?

He had 100% control of the lyrics, but David and Rick still contributed to the music at that point.

During the Final Cut, David had the odd guitar solo, and sang on one song. Roger brought in Michael Kamen(sp?) to replace him.

standard 11-13-2005 07:10 PM

Waters was very controlling during TFC.

On the song Two Suns In The Sunset, one of the parts Mason couldn't play well enough, or not enough emotion, whatever, so Waters had another guy do it.

Spinal Pap 11-13-2005 07:46 PM

I've been meaning to pick up The Final Cut but haven't gotten around to it. Is it similar to other Waters era Floyd?

Well, I like it. I don't know what you mean by Waters era Floyd, as he was with them for every studio album except for AMLOR and TDB.

I would have to say no. Not really. But it's good! :thumb:

Think Vera, Bring the boys back home, and Nobody Home.

magicbus 11-13-2005 08:32 PM
Think Vera, Bring the boys back home, and Nobody Home.
Aside from Nobody Home, those are my least favorite songs on The Wall. :/

Kingofdudes 11-13-2005 08:40 PM

They also reuse some of the backing music of Comfortably Numb on "The Final Cut"(song)
NP: Comfortably Numb

Heh, this is the first time I have listened to the studio version of the song in a long time. I always listen to one of the live versions instead.

YouGottaBeCrazy 11-13-2005 08:42 PM
Think Vera, Bring the boys back home, and Nobody Home.
Not a very good way of describing it.

It is the best I can do at comparing other Floyd songs to it. It is war themed like Vera and Bring the Boys back home, and is at times more piano driven like Nobody home.

True, but he might have misinterpreted your post as saying that the album sounds like Bring the Boys Back Home (which would make for a terrible album).

Basically, if I had to sum up the album, it would be sort of like this: There's a lot of soft singing on the album and plenty of acoustics and piano. There's a couple more rocking songs, such as "Not Now John", which shares similarities to Run Like Hell. It's kind of hard to explain. I recommend checking it out for yourself to see if you like it or not.

DeusExMachina 11-13-2005 09:00 PM

I used to be very vocal about TFC being bad. Now, I like it quite a bit. I still say it's weaker than TDB, though.

I couldn't agree more man. But you know what? I don't see lots of evidence
of anyone else trying to hard...please correct me if I'm wrong. I know Waters
and Gilmour fought quite a bit over it...but I don't think much really came of it

Riva 11-14-2005 04:38 AM

The Final Cut is good, and if you do like it, check out Amused to Death. It's one of Roger's solo albums.

Doctor Night 11-14-2005 10:41 AM
I agree. AMLOR has that typical 80's sound.. I like it, it's classic, but TDB > AMLOR by far.

I love Wearing The Inside Out, Lost For Words and Keep Talking the most probally.

I really like the whole album .. :P
I love "Lost For Words'
Well, I like it. I don't know what you mean by Waters era Floyd, as he was with them for every studio album except for AMLOR and TDB.
Yeah but I don't really consider PATGOD and SOS Waters era, I was talking more about Meddle-The Wall.

I love most of Floyd's acoustic/piano songs, so I'll definitely be getting FC soon.

standard 11-14-2005 02:50 PM

Yeah, it's a slow album. Lots of sax, paino, etc.

temporary 11-14-2005 03:51 PM

Meh, I personally don't like it a bit. Its overly dull, and tries to much to top The Wall, or at least thats how I see it. The Gunners Dream is very good though, and When the Tigers Broke Free is phenomenal.

Britton 11-14-2005 04:06 PM

Why do you all think the big 3 albums are played so much on the radio?

moaner 11-14-2005 04:10 PM
Why do you all think the big 3 albums are played so much on the radio?
They're the most accessable and frankly, they're the best, except for the wall.

Britton 11-14-2005 04:18 PM

Alice Cooper plays alotta older Floyd on his show. It's cool to hear see emily
play on the radio.

Spinal Pap 11-14-2005 04:30 PM
They're the most accessable and frankly, they're the best, except for the wall.
Yeah, and definitely the most well known. Songs like Comfortably Numb and Time receive a much greater response than say Bike or The Gnome would.

Thats cool. On this classic rock station around where I live they play Have a Cigar and Time occasionally but that's about it.

standard 11-14-2005 04:34 PM

Because they aren't weird as all ****.

robo2448 11-14-2005 04:46 PM

My radio station plays Run Like Hell. A lot. I like the song, but I don't understand why they play it so much. Every Tuesday they have a "2 for Tuesday" thing that's Run Like Hell and Comfortably Numb every single time.

Spinal Pap 11-14-2005 05:41 PM

Yeah...thats why I don't listen to the radio much anymore.

TheDMV 11-14-2005 06:09 PM
But these songs were not made with the intention of popularity or receiving airplay.

Spinal Pap 11-14-2005 06:14 PM

I know, I was just using those as examples against the more popular and radio friendly Floyd songs.
