Having always loved music as a whole, I can't say I ever understood why you are what you listen to.

It's stupid, and closes your mind to the wonder that is modern music.

Metal and punk are so closely related in origin that most people forget that. I mean, punk is just rock and roll. Made from the heart pure and free. Some of it anyway. Now a lot of both is crap, and regurgitated from years of bad music. But thats ok.

I love all music. I would never limit myself to a specific genre simply because of stupidity. I remember being this way though. Especially with hardcore. West coast punk was made fun of, as were anything outside of east coast hardcore. I never understood that. I even loved some rap. I still do. It's good stuff. Old school hip hop and punk had a lot in common. Meh.. I always loved classic rock, jazz, fusion, metal, death metal, black metal.. I mean.. It's all good. To limit yourself to just one, especially one like punk, whose ideals and standards are more mythical than religion, you're really just closing your mind.

It's sad. It's one thing to really not like it, but to do it purposely to "keep it real" is the more ignorant thing I've ever heard.

I don't mind Primus, Chevelle, Deftones, QOTSA, Foo Fighters or Alien Ant Farm. Those are the only rock bands I can stand. Metal bands annoy me but I respect them.
Not to start a genre war...but how can you say the Deftones aren't Metal? :-\

P.S. In relation to the thread I listen to tons of R&M stuff.

Ehh because I only really like Minerva and that's not really metal :/

rip-metal_rules 10-27-2005 06:32 PM

ok, could someone please enunciate on the differences between R&M and Punk for me? and give me some example bands. cuz i thought punk was a branch of rock.

lak89 10-27-2005 08:46 PM

it's my favorite genre, so i definitely don't have anything against it, although i do listen to a bit of punk

Punk bands:
Circle Jerks
Dead Kennedys
Black Flag
The Clash
Strike Anywhere
Jerry's Kids
The Misfits
Adolescents
The Buzzcocks
Conflict
Subhumans
Die Hunns
The Stitches
Smut Peddlers
7 Seconds
The Dead Boys

TemperamentalGoat 10-27-2005 09:37 PM

well ultimately they're all a branch of "rock music"

I like all these genres, though I give preference to metal because it seemed to have greater potential to be complex (mainly prog-metal). Then I realized there are plenty of progressive-ish punk bands too, destroying my bias.

whoever mentioned jazz, go you. jazz rules.

I love Death/80's/Glam-Hair/Black/Thrash Metal just as much as I love Punk/Oi!/Ska(not so much on the Ska though).

I try to branch out though, I'll listen to pretty much anything at least once and even then I generally end up liking it; Classical, Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Black Metal, Power Metal, 80's Metal, Thrash Metal, Glam/Hair Metal, Death Metal, Punk, Oi!, Ska, Crust, Jazz, Blues, and a handful of other genres that I spin from time to time.

TheNowhereman42 10-27-2005 10:07 PM

Punk, Rock, and Metal all suck, Mathcore, Nintendocore, Nardcore, Grindcore, Power Violence, and and C'ock Rock are where its at.

I'm far to into my own music to really care what everyone else is listening to or what they think of the music I do listen to, Cant say I really know what specific genres I listen to, I dont really like to catagorize.

I never got the whole "Labels are for FOOD!" thing. You can't tell me Gwar and Lifetime are the same thing.

AIRIC 10-28-2005 01:29 PM

Yeah, I like labeling music.

DrGolovaCroxby 10-28-2005 02:02 PM

GWAR > punk rock

AIRIC 10-28-2005 02:08 PM

GWAR played here Wednesday, I didn't go.

You=Wrong

redstainedeyes 10-28-2005 04:03 PM

GWARis hilarious. Quote by the guy from GWAR in Alternative Press: I really love Grand Theft Auto San Andreas because I get to run around as an Al Qaeda cyborg in my tighty whities, killing people with a double-headed dildo. Now that's a game. And it's not too different from reality either.

So therefore GWAR>You. Not really though.

nat.snoxell 10-29-2005 12:26 AM

**** No!!!

Speed/Thrash Metal (atleast from the early eighties) should be something all punkheads should atleast have the slightest taste for. (IMHO)

AndreTheHyena 10-29-2005 12:59 AM

I've seen GWAR twice; each time was phenomenal.

TakeWarning 10-29-2005 01:19 AM

GWAR is wikkidy-whack.

You need a new phrase.

Aus Rotten 10-29-2005 01:24 AM

Going with the trend, i'm not saying that Rock and Metal bands don't have talent, they do their thing and it's just not my style. It doesn't appeal to me. That doesn't make them any less musicians. For example, I HATE with all my heart classic rock. It just doesn't appeal to me in the least bit shape or form, but that doesn't mean Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. don't have talent or aren't good bands, I just don't like them. As for Rush, they have some awesome and very difficult/technical guitar and bass lines, just they don't appeal to me lyrically at all.
You=Wrong
you don't even know, child.

I'll get a new one soon. Next time I think of something.

smokersdieyounger 10-29-2005 06:20 AM
I go to my fair share of metal shows, and not once have I ever said, "Man, the crowd was awesome tonight". Metal is one of those unfortunate genres, like mainstream punk, that is deluded and inevitably ruined by its fans.
The Haunted are underground thrash, and where are you from? Because audiences in the UK are known to be better because we dont get as many gigs. And the Pogo started here man!

deathscreamingsheep 10-29-2005 09:38 AM

^^ I'm pretty sure I have been to metal shows with an immense atmosphere and actually thought that the "Crowd was awesome tonight". Mastodon were a good example of this.

I listen to both punk and metal. These days anyway, a lot of people whom I know who think they are punks claim to dislike metal because "...It's all just screaming and double-bass pedals..." When I try and relate to them that metalcore is a fusion of both metal and hardcore punk they ain't having it.

mullets suk 10-29-2005 10:32 AM

im not really in to metal though when i listen to it when it comes on the radio/tv. but when im listen to music on my computer i find that i cant listen to songs more then 3 minute long songs. i may just have a short attention span
and i like a lot of rock but its the same if its to long its hard for me to continue listening to it

smokersdieyounger 10-30-2005 07:20 AM

I think theres more metalheads who dislike punks than the other way around.

mainly because our instrumental skill in punk isnt up to metal standards

Glitterati 10-30-2005 10:26 AM
mainly because our instrumental skill in punk isnt up to metal standards
No reason to look down on punx just we don't do seven minute wankfests i.e. Yngwie Malmsteen.
