I just downloaded a Lee Perry comilation cd called Reggae Greats. It has some songs that he produced and some of his own songs and its a really great cd.
I'm also still looking for Heart of the Congos and a Max Romeo album but so far I haven't found anything yet. Anyone wanna help me out? :naughty: |

Who loves ganja? :D |
I thought Bad Brains was more of a punk group? Are they reggae?
|

They're all over the place. They have songs that are punk, songs that are reggae, songs that are dub, songs that are metal, and tons of other stuff. |

Though I really enjoy reggae, I claim edge. I'm know there's a lot on MX that do, however. And about Bad Brains, go back to find that link of theirs and download some of their reggae/dub stuff. Leaving Babylon The Meek The Man Won't Annoy Ya That's a good start. They have a lot more than what's on that site though. |

Anyone ever heard of SOJA (Soldiers of Jah Army)? They are an incredibly i-spirational roots reggae group. Much respect to the group. They are from Arlington, VA (close to home, much love), and have been on the scene for maybe 8 years now... very intelligent, conscious, real message mixed with roots reggae sound -- anything I can say falls utterly short of their abilities. Check 'em at: SOJA Music They are an inspiration to my life and music. And speaking of music, I'll post some of our band's music (Sons of Solomon) sometime when we can. We've got some live recordings, but they are on the board at our guitarist's place. Thanks for the interest Zion and Shiznet! Much love and respect, -Roaryasta, keyboarding rasta |

Are their genres divided up among albums? Like do they have a metal album, a dub album, etc., or do their albums have songs in each genre?

usually they have a couple of reggae songs on each c-d (along with alot of punk stuff) they also have an entire dub c-d, and an entire metal sounding c-d, with some metal songs every now mixed in with their regular hardcore punk |

Their most metal influenced album is I Against I, their best dub album is I & I Survived, and albums like their self titled have a mix of punk and reggae. |

I'm really liking the Congos album, thanks Zion Gates.
I just watched the Clash documentary Westway to the World, and Paul Simion talked about reggae a lot and was name dropping bands left and right. So I'm check into a few of the ones he was talking about. |
i like:
bob marley sublime burning spear long beach dub allstars long beach shortbus buju banton mishka matisyahu |
Oh yeah, I forgot about Burning Spear. I'm not sure when the last time we talked about them was, but Man In The Hills is awesome.
|
My favorite Burning Spear song is "The Invasion/Black Wa-Da-Da".
He was the first reggae artist I purchased music by. Cept Bad Brains. |
My favorite Burning Spear song is "Old Marcus Garvey". I like the horn parts.
|
"Burning Reggae" is one hot song by him. "Jah Kingdom" is nice too.
|
Did anyone of you guys see them on the 2004 Bonnaroo DVD? They do a reeeeally cool song called "Postman".
|
I've haven't seen the DVD but I've considered renting it once or twice. He's supposed to be pretty good live.

Listening to the first song on their site right now. Pretty good. I like the lyrics. "Time Come Due" is really good too. |
my first burning spear song was travelling, my favourite is throw down your arms, or invasion / black wa-da-da ...you guys should definatly check out his album dry & heavy, definatly his most underrated work.
|
what do you guys think of dancehall? when i went to jamaica everyone was listening to dancehall (and marley ofcourse) there seems to be a lack of roots music left, i didnt talk to locals, but the ones i did talk to listened to mainly dancehall, ive also noticed that many bands are switching to a more dancehall sound (example: black uhuru and michael rose)...personally i really dont like it.
|
From what I've heard I think dancehall is okay, but I don't have any straight ahead albums or anything so I can't have a really concrete opinion on it.
Also, when did you go to Jamaica? What's it like there? |

There was this reggae band that played one night, so i went to go talk to them, nice guys. Iam going back once i reach grade 12 (iam in grade 10 right now) with my dad, we are gonna visite alot of stuff, hopefully alot envolving reggae + getting a bunch of reggae c-ds. |
