I'm into a lot of electronica and death metal lately as well. It's nice to see somebody with diverse tastes like mine
Same. I just look at it as music and only use the genres to describe my current moods. Genres are useless labels, anyway.
Man, Tash is indeed great. He has some killer lyrics and probably has one of the most distinctive voices in the whole genre- He actually sounds drunk when rhyming.
Haha yeah. And he's so energetic. His delivery in his first verse of "All The Way Live" is so extremely flawless. It always is.

THANK GOD SOMEBODY AGREES! although there is exception to this rule
i stand by it for the most part.
People that say that usually know nothing about underground rap.

Rap released after 1991 in general is better than anything released before, although there are a few exceptions like EPMD, King Tee, Slick Rick and such.

I suggest checking out this song if you want some real, good hip hop.

Classic Snoop Dog which is much better than his new stuff.

I'm just getting into rap, I've tended to shy away from it because it was what my brothers were into so I rebelled from it. Odd, I know. MX has been a HUGE influence in me finding out about rap artists, and the ones I like so far are very mainstream (Kanye West, Talib Kweli, Common, Jurassic 5, the Roots, A Tribe Called Quest and so on), but I hope to delve further into the genre.

I'm of the persuasion that people slag mainstream rap off to easily - even those who are generally fans of rap say things along the lines of "yeah mainstream is crap, but the underground stuff is great". As I've said, I don't have much exposure to underground rap (I hope to), but there are some gems in the mainstream too. Even artists who I tend to not like (Jay-z, as one example) do still have some great material in their catalogues. The people who follow the whole "rap is crap!" mentality usually avoid pop as well though, so that shows the merit of their opinion to me.

I have also recently been enjoying groups such as the Gorillaz who blend rap with other styles... maybe a simple first step for those who have avoided to the genre?

Nice FA, ATM. Oh and I don't know how things usually work in here, but I think it's a great idea to have FAs that are outside of R&M. An easy introduction to a new style of music to people who might not have been initially interested - I'm all for it.

edit: oh, and I forgot to mention: despite his lacking beats, I quite enjoy the Streets. And Dizzee Rascal.

RazorsInTheNight 05-13-2005 01:19 AM

Some more tracks by A Tribe Called Quest. The first four tracks are off The Low End Theory, which has to be one of the greatest records put out. The last one is my favorite song off of Midnight Marauders.
Spread the ATCQ I say. Excursions is one of my all time favourite rap songs.
Rap is great. I first started listening to it back in 93' or so with the release of "gangstas paradise" by Coolio. I love alot of older rap music but, I find the "new" stuff of today to be waaaaaaay to over done/over played and are by far making WAAAAAAAAAY too much money. NwA, ghetto boys, eazy e(solo) are probably my favourite rap/rap groups of all time however Tupac and biggie are closely behind. Every commercial rap artist of today (50 cent, the game, g(ay)-unit) is just coping on the style of these artists and is completely unoriginal.

to sum it up: Old rap = good
New rap = no good
Whats up with all this new stuff sucks old stuff is better??? You people obviously don't look into this stuff very well. It's not that old is better and new sucks it's just that old stuff use to be popular and now you have to look for good music.

I think the one thing that annoys me most about rap is thelack of instruments.

If they put some instrumental stuff in the background then I might consider listeniong to it but until then, nope sorry

The Roots?
Black Eyed Peas?
Public Enemy?
A Tribe Called Quest?
Talib Kweli?
Mos Def?
Wyclef Jean?
Lauryn Hill?

Seriously, open your ears. And, more importantly, drop your stupid prejudice against non-acoustic instruments.

Exactly right. Bass is a MAJOR part of rap, aswell as many other instruments.

No it's not. The basis of rap is basically DJ's cutting up older songs, mix them, put them over a drumcomputer generated drum pattern, and let rappers rap over it.

Maybe 2 or 3% of the hip-hop community uses real instruments.

Bartender 05-13-2005 02:58 PM

Very. I like them. Only for the beats, though. I always thought Vinnie's lyrics were either psuedo-intellectual, or overused punchlines. Overal great group, though.

Stoupe's the reason I like them. His beats are amazing. Especially War Ensemble, which is still my favorite song of theirs.

No, I'm just confused about the tracklisting on one of their albums (Legacy of Blood).

He has his moments, but yeah, on the whole it's the music I like more than the lyrics, I think.

Any help (from anyone) appreciated with this tracklist, anyway.

Bah, it's not my attitude. I just read it so much, I started saying it myself. But you know what I mean.

I fully agree, I espcially like Violent By Design, some great tunes on that album. I find the lyrics somewhat interesting although they seem to overuse the same sort of material.

I know. I assumed from your intelligence in your other posts that it was just a slip of the tongue.
