I'd say...start off with a song that kinda challenges you. If u can get over the initial difficulties then u know you're gonna be a good bassist, some people really arent suited to bass and this will show that. Dont Stick to one genre of music either explore with music even if u dont initially like it! Just totally Chill out when u play...so many bassists i know try and show me up when i play...(cause yeh, i am the only female bassist in our town) But they look so uptight its funny, dont go rigid and stiff let ur fingers go floppy...and follow the music. Relaxing is the best way to becoming a great bassist!
A Good song to Start on is;
Lit-Miserable
And any Offspring song-cause they are all sooooo easy!

Bex :)

punk_rocker_taz 01-11-2005 02:07 AM

Most Green Day song are pretty easy
Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water - Really Easy
White Stripes - 7 Nation Army - Really Easy
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl? - Easy

I learnt these 3 songs the first day I had my bass. The first song I actually learnt was Wild Thing by The Troggs..... easy and catchy

Sorry dude, but you'll find a lot of people who play bass dont like blink, myself included. It's just that hoppus is so poor. I mean as a fundemental bassist he serves his function perfectly, but he has no creative talent and no personal flair. Sorry, it's just the way it is bud....

....as for something easy to play - have a shot at "The O'Jays - For the Love Of Money"

it goes like this:

G ---------------------------------------------------------
D -------x11-11--x9--x9--x9x--x9--x9x--x9x--x9x--9x--8-9-11
A ---------------------------------------------------------
E --9--9---------------------------------------------------

thats it, just make up your own variations as you see fit. It's great fun to play and it gives you a use for your phaser (if you have one), although it still sounds good without.

rage_h87 01-15-2005 11:36 AM

i guess these would be fairly easy if u have a bit of experience (couple of months of bass playing)
black sabbath - iron man - easy
metallica - pulling teeth - (0:00-0:45) easy it becomes gradually harder as the song progresses its not actually impossible.
Rage against the machine - bulls on parade - easy
Rage against the machine - bombtrack - easy (intro - moderate)
rage against the machine - wake up

thats pretty much what i can think of right now....

wontonjon89 01-15-2005 09:22 PM

Green Day- When I come Around, American Idiot, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Brain Stew (most green day stuff is anyway...)
Sum 41- In Too Deep, Motivation, Pain For Pleasure
Blink 182- First Date, I Miss You
The Bouncing Souls- Manthem
The Vines- Ride

that one main riff in Smoke On The Water is so easy.... seven nation army is, too, but that's actually a bass string that he put on the electric guitar.

Random.bass.player. 01-28-2005 12:02 PM

Shyanel 01-31-2005 08:01 AM

I wouldn't say higher ground and time is running out are appropriate begginer songs to be honest, the timing on higher ground is pretty tough and time is running out has some nasty bits too.

I think you probably found them easy because like you said, you practice a LOT and used to play the gee-tar!
