Hope of the States - the red the white the blue

This is exciting, I have been wanting to hear these guys for a while.

Starts with fast acoustic guitar and the singing comes in almost straight away. I really like his vocal style. The rhythm of the vocals is cool. I'm really digging the lyrics too. Seems to be about following everything your country does or something.

A piano break just before the chorus is very cool, a falling down effect. "The red white and the blue has always been what led you. if you don't do something they'll steal it all from under you" is a great chorus.

Back to beginning for verse 2 pretty much, then the same thing for chorus 2. I was just going to say it was simply structured, but the chorus just took off and is left with an acoustic playing something reminiscent of running, or charging, accompanied by an incredibly rad string arrangement. I really love this bit.

Back to chorus, well transitioned. song fades out with a whole load of feedback.

I really loved that. I must hear more by these guys. 8.6/10

Dibsit!

Glad you liked the song, it think HOTS are awesome.

Tapeworm 08-05-2004 09:15 AM

Yeah, I had heard you mention them in the same breath as Ryan Adams so I was quite prepared for good goodness. I look forward to see which one you do.

Joey Cape-violins

Stars off instantly with acoustic and vocals. He has a very smooth and good voice. The acoustic guitar is nicely played, his voice being the centre of the attention. Cool soundign accordion coming in now adding a little more septh to the song.
Cool chorus, back into that minmal verse again. So im paying more attention to the lyrics now and they are sweet, but nothing too awesome.
I like the slight change in dynamics leading into the chorus. I can tell this is going to grow on me. Cool instrumental now, its like a solo in a way and...it all stops suddenly and back into that verse and vocal bit. That was tight!
Im pretty sure this is a quiet version of the chorus...oh the other layers of instrumentation are coming in, chorus again which i assume is the last time...and yes, it ends.

It was very good, nothing groundbreaking but i will be interested in checking some more stuff out.

That's freaky cool. He is the singer from Lagwagon, and the solo album is awesome.

Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining

Ok, I actually found a copy of "hour of the bewilderbeast" that I didn't know I had. I used to listen to the About a Boy soundtrack a lot, so this should be cool. I don't think I even ever listened to this album.

Starts off with strings, and in comes a french horn or something. Very very nice intro. Acoustic guitar shows signs of appearing, and everything stops. Acoustic by itself now. Singing comes in, beautiful lyrics. He's singing with the rhythm of the picked out notes, and it works smashingly.

Brass instrument comes back in with the strings. He sings "put a little bit of sunshine in your life", and the song turns much brighter and happier. Really good chorus sounding bit, and then an instrumental break.

Back to verse, but different slightly. His vocals are incredibly warming. Very awesome instrumental bit, with piano coming in, and back to the chorus. And then it stops.

The vocals fit the lyrics and the music very well, and I have to say I'm in love with Badly Drawn Boy again. 9/10

Thank you for reminding me.

Now It's Overheard - Hold Your Spin : 3:47

Starts out with some synth and then some synth-sounding drums come in and along with singing. They add some effects to the voice; pretty cool. Now the beat becomes more "poppy," but it doesnt sound bad.

A few verses of this (or one; i cant tell), then the chorus busts out with a very upbeat sound to it. It kinda reminds me of what Oasis' old stuff sounded like...until this part comes in. Very high voices saying "bop-bop-bop-bop" or something to that nature. The singer adds a little variation to it.

The music starts slowing down it all fades away. Hmm, kinda short, but overall a decent song with a nice upbeat feel to it. 8/10

a silver mount zion - movie (never made) (very mellow song with beautiful lyrics)

Thus, I take the dibs of mod rock.

Holy shit. The file is huge! like 33 mB huge! I may need to revoke it.

moderaterock222 08-05-2004 12:42 PM

So are you revoking or not? I dont mind you taking this one if it helps more people get into these wonderfull artists.

Wanker 08-05-2004 12:54 PM

its only about 3 and a half minutes long. its shouldnt be that big.

Dancin' Man 08-05-2004 01:46 PM

Godspeed You Black Emperor - A Silver Mount Zion 6:21

This is crazy, I was certain that this was a metal band. The words Godspeed and Black made this seem like a some gothic thrash band from Norway. Instead I got something complety different. The song opens on a piano then a long silence, this is quite ackward and uncomfortable, good thing these aren't tension chords. Right now I am really put off by the silences and the long length of theis song but I have patience. Things are starting to pick up and get lounder, it is around two minutes and thirty seconds in. You said something about beatiful lyrics I don't hear anything yet, unless I'm supposed to be able to understand the static sounds. I guess the overall effect of the song is working I am becoming somewhat scarerd and sad. No I'm not crying to cry, actually the thought of that makes me laugh. Um, the song just suddenly ended, do I have the right version?

7/10 I gave it an extra two points because it moved me.

My Songs:
Wire - 15th (Post Punk)
Olivia Tremor Control - A Familiar Noise (Art Pop)
Gang of Four - Contact (Punk)

Dancin' Man 08-05-2004 11:13 PM

A Silver Mount Zion is the band not the song. You got GYBE!'s song instead of ASMZ's song movie. Whatever, I don't think anyone cares. (not dibs)

Wire -- The 15th

Starts out with a nifty little riff. Singing starts pretty fast. The guy has a pretty subdued voice, with what sounds like a british accent. The chorus has some cool synth/horn/whatever work. It's a little louder than the verse and it's pretty catchy.

I like the guy's voice, but the lyrics don't seem too groundbreaking.
Here comes a solo, with some more synth/organ action. Kinda reminds me of The Pixies, but a more "normal" version of the Pixies. Maybe if Coldplay or Snow Patrol and The Pixies had a baby.

I'm not sure if the marriage would last, though.

Overall -- 7/10 Pretty good, but it might not stand up to repeated listens.

My Songs:
Rouge Wave -- Nourishment Nation (Indie pop) Might be kind of hard to find, but I think the song is on their website.
The Flaming Lips -- Race for the Prize (Indie pop/psych pop) Awesome song, finally bought The Soft Bulletin.
Moonbabies -- Over My Head (Indie pop...yet again) The song can be downloaded from their site.

Bartender 08-06-2004 08:02 AM

Dibs.

Bartender 08-06-2004 09:09 AM

No idea what to expect.
Moonbabies - Over My Head - 3:47

Starts off with a piano melody, quiet at first but gaining in confidence. I can hear crackling in the background, but I don't know whether that's part of the song, or something to do with the quality of the file I have. Vocals come in just before 1:00.

I like them. Has a slight accent (which I can't place, but accent should be enough), and a slight distortion effect. The first two lines are sung low, and then the next two high, with occasional quiet, breathy background vocals. I'm pretty sure they're all coming from the same person, though I could be wrong.

Other instruments come in occasionally - sometimes higher keys on the piano, sometimes what might be quiet guitar, or could be distorted piano, or even a harpsichord or other keyboard instrument.

Vocals finish around 3:00, allowing for a little bit of variation on the main piano melody, and then the music fades out for the song to end on gentle distortion noise. I guess the crackling was meant to be there.

8/10, I'm a sucker for piano.

Would I listen to more of the same band? Yes, unless this is their only piano-based song.

Songs;
The Beta Band - Dry the Rain (lo-fi alt. folk/rock)
Einstürzende Neubauten - Blume (French version) (ostensibly an industrial band, but I've given up trying to classify each of their songs)
Circle Takes the Square - Interview at the Ruins (emocore)

Newbie to this here place

Hey all,

This being my first post I will have more questions than dibbs, for now. Sorry to do this on your thread. I like what you guys are doing and would like to get some outsider views on some South African bands, yes,we have bands here! Our industry is in a mess so most of these guys are unsigned, which I suppose could qualify within "indie". Im not going to posts names, first want to see if anyone is up for it:)

So, anyone?

Well_Respected_Man 08-06-2004 10:18 AM

The Beta Band - Dry The Rain 6:05

Based on the name, I'm not sure what to expect and I'm not too familier with Indie Folk, so this is going ot be something new for me. The songs starts on an electric drum beat and acoustic guitar. I hear a slide guitar in the backround, thats and instrument I could never really like but it sounds okay so far. The vocals are nice, I like how he has a very clear voice and holds pitches for just the right amount of time. At around two minutes things start to pick and get more funky. I'm nodding my head from side to side which is something I rarely do. God, What is the percusion sound I've heard that before but I'm not sure what it is, it's the coolest sound. That and the horn section that follows makes this song really interesting. At this point the first two minutes were defintley worth it in building that great tension now being released what I'm going to refer as the shangri-la moment. I'm dissapointed the song ended on a fade out I was hoping it would go into a new part or possibly back to the verse. That and the country feel are the only bad things I have to say about this song. I'm goign to have that horn part in my head for the rest of the day.

My Score: 8.5/10 I'm liking this Indie Folk music

Bonzo Dog Band - Beautiful Zelda (Weird Pop)
Olivia Tremor Control - A Familiar Noise (Lo-Fi)
Fugazi - Turkish Disco (Indie)

Wanted to kno if they are really that great

It's a very short song.. not even 2:30 .. but lets listen to it before judging it :)
Starts of with some guitar and drum -- the guitar falls away quite soon and leaves a very nice bassline... really cool there.. then guitars come back in.. getting a little boring but still really cool... i'm waiting for my vocals but i'm afraid they might not come.......... The guitars keep playing really catchy little stuff.. and i'm pretty sure that there is a 2nd guitar too... they play quite wel together... then at 1:50 the instrumental song takes a little change to a different sounds for 20 seconds or so.. that was really cool but i would have liked some vocals

6/10 not bad, i just dont like the instrumental songs

My Picks:
Jeff Buckley - Forget Her << unreleased Track of Grace
The Strokes - The End Has No End << The Strokes .. Love em Or Hate em
The Cure - The Lovecats << you all probably know this already.. Cool though!
Counting Crows - Mr Jones << GOTTA love this song
The Coral - I Remember When << Best Chorus Ever
