i used to say "man i wish i grew up in the 70's" but if you think about, we get to enjoy all the great bands of the before our time as well as bands that are big now, even so back in that time we wouldnt have been as appricative of them as we are now, knowing what we know. Its nice to be able to look back at over 40 years of rock and metal and enjoy music from every decade.

PinkFloyd 03-23-2004 07:38 PM
but floyd isn't starting a new popular revival of psychadelia. i wasn't even aware they had new stuff, and if they do, it's not bringing the industry as a whole back to the quality of the classic rock. they aren't getting any radio play, and thus aren't getting new fans. while they are probably bucking the formulas, as they did when they started, the odds of them coming out with another Dark Side, and exploding onto the mainstream of contemperary music is not likely...especially without roger waters
hehe, I didn't mean lately as in NEW floyd but I mean because you didn't mention them in your band listings.

Frodo 03-23-2004 07:40 PM

Ahhh classic rock. It's excellent to see such a great thread on such beautiful, timeless music.

Classic Rock at its best simply cannot be put into words.

ghank1509 03-23-2004 07:50 PM

would u guys consider simon and garfunkle classic rock or would they be considered folk?

anyway my favorite classic rock bands include boston, zep, pink floyd, sabbath, rush, ac/dc, and i guess the talking heads would be considered more of a new wave kind of thing, but considering how old some of their stuff is i guess they're classic

A band can be many differnet things. Led Zeppelin did some folk, some rock, some blues, some country and some other kinds of songs. Simon and g-funk had some rock and some folk so they could be be folk/rock. I find that bands that don't limit themselfs to just one kind of music are much better than one dimentional bands.

They maybe considered on the poppier side of Folk.

IMO Syd Barrett>Roger Waters
Although I love Dark Side of the Moon alot.

"They tell you in school about freedom, but when you're tryin' to be free they never let ya. They say it's easy, ain't nothin' to it, and now the army is out to get ya...."

Man, I can't believe how much more stuff nowadays sucks compared to the '60s and '70s.

Anybody heard of the Pretty Things or the 13th Floor Elevators? Pretty seminal bands.
I find that bands that don't limit themselfs to just one kind of music are much better than one dimentional bands.
I've been saying that all my life; I don't know how any band can play just one particular style, looks like things would get pretty tedious. I guess they're just trying to stick with what they're good at, but what about people that only listen to (mostly) one genre? I've never had a favorite band that was one-dimensional.

Moroii 03-24-2004 04:24 AM
Yeah. Greatest band ever. I worship them, I have all of their cds exept for Zeppelin 3 and that's only because I heard is wasn't all that good so I decided to spend my money on some Neil young and Pink Floyd. I'll get Zeppelin 3 soon though.
Zeppelin are my fave, too; I fell in love with rock music to the sound of Page playing a Telecaster (w/ a bow, occasionally.) Page is the most influential guitarist for me (Jimi's second, of course). Almost every aspect of his playing appeals to me; I share most of his interests music-wise. Especially the way Zep used dynamics and atmosphere, which lifted them above a lot of heavy bands at the time, and especially later on.

The only thing is, I hope like Badmoon said that people aren't overlooking bands from that era and just listening to Zeppelin, Floyd and the Beatles. I know alot of my favorites tend to be pretty obvious, but I'm just being honest about what I like.

EDIT: Sorry 'bout posting three times in a row, I thought someone would have posted between them by now.

B0nz0 03-24-2004 03:23 PM

i'm just happy if ppl are listening to any bands from that era at all. once u let in the beatles, zep, and floyd, soon the floodgates open. pretty soon the person has been weened onto the who, hendrix, dylan, traffic, ccr, grateful dead, the doors, the doobie bros, etc. i've seen it happen quite frequently

That was in another thread... Well anyway yeah it's right. Some bands that are one dimensional like ac/dc and Van Halen are still great even though they never change but sometimes different kinds of music in one band can be better.

amused to death 03-24-2004 04:49 PM

i gotta admit, i am a massive pink floyd fan. ask me any question on them! i also love led zep and focus among others

BludgeonySteve 03-24-2004 05:01 PM

Who played sax on dark side of the moon?

amused to death 03-24-2004 05:21 PM

his name was Dick Parry. next

BludgeonySteve 03-24-2004 05:24 PM

Name all of the pink floyd albums of the 70s and 80s and the year made.

If you get that then we will come to the conclusion that you really know your floyd :thumb:

jimmypumpkin 03-24-2004 05:24 PM

Dick parry played sax on all the 70's floyd albums.

Ok, amused to death (great album by the way;)) who is the only floyd member to play on all the albums?

i wouldn't call van halen entirely one dimensional. i mean u can't even compare "hot for teacher" with "i can't stop loving u". but ac/dc is pretty one dimensional.

so what are the best classic rocks u've seen live? mine are the doors (even without morrison they were really good), the allman bros, the doobie bros, and joe cocker. those guys all put on great memorable shows.

Alice Cooper, I recomend everyone to see him. There is no doubt in my mind that he does the greatest shows.

The Who, they're not as energetic as they used to be, yet still fabulous.

Ted Nugent, He's hilarious as hell, and is just crazy on stage.

FrailandBedazzled1979 03-24-2004 09:56 PM

^^^

im not much of a Who fan, but i have seen Alice Cooper (in 01') and I saw Ted last summer open for ZZ Top with Kenny Wayne Sheppeard and Ted was easily the shows highlight.

Dies he even have better shows than kiss? People say that they have the greatest shows ever.

Spoot 03-25-2004 06:09 PM

I'm only 15 years old, but I've been into classic rock for a long time. Stuff like:

Boston, Bob Seger, Blue Oyster Cult, .38 Special, Bad Company, The Eagles, Grateful Dead, The Doors, The Cars, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Steve Miller Band, Traffic, The Beatles, Fog Hat, Deep Purple, David Bowie, etc, etc, etc.

Great stuff, I've grown up listening to this stuff, listen to new rock, and you just don't get the same feeling or soul you get from the old stuff. Oldies, but goodies...

Like the hanging himself and the snake? Man people do crazy stuff to entertain others. Reminds me of this kid who lights himself on fire for attention. Exept that kid doesn't make great music.

Cooper was flawless live, but Kiss still put on the hottest show on earth!!

anyone into Ian Anderson's solo albums? like secret langugage of birds, or rupi's dance?

Badmoon 03-26-2004 10:03 PM

^ Not particularly, but I do like some of his stuff. Just not enough to buy an album of his, or Jethro Tull for that matter.

BludgeonySteve 03-26-2004 10:06 PM

Oh yeah? What about the time Cooper messed up on his hanging himself act and was dead for 15 minutes? Hardly flawless.

Badmoon 03-26-2004 10:13 PM

^ I have never heard that.
