No, I don't care if it's nerdy. Most people just blatantly misuse the word because they don't know its actual German meaning. It started with people saying, for example, "(insert something here) uber all" which is fine, but then they started saying, "(instert something here) is uber cool," which is not fine. It translates to "(instert something here) is over cool."
It just really irks me for some reason, and it's a pet peeve. It's an ignorance that caught on and people hopped on the bandwagon, and that really angers me.
Saying something is uber cool, is actually sort of proper usage (the mixing of two languages aside).. "Das ist uber toll!" <- German phrase.. "That's overly great".. Just because it doesn't make sense directly translated doesn't mean it doesn't make sense at all. |
I've never heard it used by any German people, but whatever. And I know that just because something doesn't directly translate doesn't mean it doesn't work. The point is that it bugs me because most people using it don't know what they're actually saying. Several people I've talked to thought it meant "super," which is really annoying. And, aside from that, like you said, the mixing of the two languages is lame.
|
Hehe.. I would say I agree if it wasn't for the fact that a big part of my everyday language uses english words....

You're forgetting the fact that virtually every language is a ripoff of a previous language. This is like saying that mixing genres is lame. Learning another language would be a lot harder to master if it weren't for the mixed concepts, like conjugated verbs, similiar uses of definite and indefinite articles, and etcetera. |
Oh man. I was liking just "Tool".
Doesn't using this "Rock and Metal's..." thing cancel out the whole reason the mods got rid of ***Official*** threads? |

True. English is quite inspired from German. |
Dried Muffins... You saw that show man? Tell me how that was! I have tickets in chicago the 30th... best seats in the house.

Hey, I heard something that TOOL might break up after their new album comes out. Anyone know if that's true? I pray to God it aint

i never heard uber using in germany or austria too. the only word people are using in vienna (its a sort of dialect/slang - and only (!) in vienna) they say 'UR'-something. f.e.: Ur-cool, UR-geil, Ur-leiwand, Ur-lässsig, du bist Ur-lieb, etc. geil, leiwand, lässig you can translate to 'cool' or something like that. in this words /greetings from vienna  |

Yeah.. They might break up.. They might throw off their skin and reveal they're demons from the dimension of calcuta, here to save us all from the giant chihuahua in the sky... But I'd say both scenarios are about just as probable |
Anyone care to post a link to adam's myspace page.
Edit:No matter.I found it. |
Hehe.. I would say I agree if it wasn't for the fact that a big part of my everyday language uses english words....
That's true, tons of languages use English words, because they hear it on TV. Especially 'Cool', 'Oh my God' (I hate that. ), every swear word. Etc. Downloading Aenima now, I started yesterday and got to 50%, but then I had to go. :upset: By the way: This thread isn't about Tool at all, is it? |

By the way: This thread isn't about Tool at all, is it?
Oh shi.. We got caught. Its more of a therapy (?) session for the poor fans who have learned every meaning of the word 'Patience' Wait till the new one is finally released |
I expect many many threads, we should put a big flashlight on this one.

Like we have a fucking choice. :upset: /angry rob. NP : Radiohead and some band - wish you were here...good stuff. |

Actually, that's not how I mix in english words.. I usually end up using 6 syllable words from the english language because I don't know them in danish :upset:.. My thoughts are in half-english/half-danish, wich makes it harder to use both languages properly.. I blame the internet |
Yeah, I have that as well, I often want to say something, then say the English word then ask someone, how do you say that in Dutch?
|
Yeah.. Exactly.. The worst part is when it's a word or sentence, that only works in english... hehe
|
Not to mention the stupidest fucking one. It pisses me off so much.
