someone gas this noob, im sick of the bad dead jokes

pate 12-01-2008 03:54 PM

Alright, I think for the album of the year comp I'll be running I want to make it metal only, and the qualification for being metal is the band being on Metal Archives. I know the site fails 70% of the time, but it's an easy way to limit.

Somebody else can run a non-metal one or something if people want non-metal.
Thoughts?

Permanent Solution 12-01-2008 05:17 PM

I seem to recall facing the problem of pretty well known metal bands not being on MA...but idk if it's any more practical to go by amg, rym, wiki or any of those either.

As long as there's a standard criteria people can't bitch too much though i guess.

pate 12-01-2008 05:33 PM

MA is the most accurate of all of those though.

Angmar 12-01-2008 07:19 PM

Just go by MA and if someone wants to dispute an album or band let them and somehow make a decision idk.

pate 12-01-2008 07:26 PM

Well, the point of using something else as the decider was to avoid having someone make a decision.

I can just call it "Top Albums of 2008 That Are On M-A"

pate 12-03-2008 01:14 PM

Should I start the comp like now or wait until Jan 1? Any '08 album that's yet to be released has leaked anyway.

Jom 12-03-2008 01:17 PM

It'd probably be best to get started now, in the very least with the preliminary stuff.

pate 12-03-2008 03:19 PM

Will do. Making thread now.

Please sticky the nominations thread. Thanks.

hismajestythepope 12-03-2008 06:26 PM

im gonna keep complaining about the metal-archives link thing because theyve gotten more absurd with the types of bands they wont allow to be added, example:

Permanent Solution 12-09-2008 11:41 AM

Hey guys,

I don't know where we're getting these new folk from, but instead of flaming them and killing our forum even more, I think we should all share our wealth of knowledge :)

So, one thing I was thinking we could do is sort of along the lines of Jom's sticky about essential albums, but do a sort of guide to how to get into more metal styles. Like I mean we all sort of follow the same progression right? We started with Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, moved to In Flames and CoB, Iron Maiden and Metallica are somewhere in there. I think having a sticky to sort of outline bands for people to check out would be good since we seem to be getting lots of more mainstream folks and all you guys want to do is flame them =\

Would folks participate in this ITT please and then I can make a sticky post? I'll probably point to Jom's lists too for completeness.

pate 12-09-2008 11:43 AM

Sure.

Txus 12-09-2008 11:52 AM

Sounds like a good plan.

Permanent Solution 12-09-2008 11:55 AM

Ok I'm thinking something like this. Provide suggestions/add genres.

Hard Rock/Nu-metal
Bands you may already like:
Linkin Park
Breaking Benjamin
Three Days Grace
12 Stones
Trapt

Bands you should like:
Therapy?
Project 86

Bands to expand your tastes:
In Flames
Children of Bodom
Dragonforce
Iron Maiden
Metallica

Power Metal
Bands you may already like:
Dragonforce
Avenged Sevenfold

Bands you should like:
Blind Guardian
Sonata Arctica
Rhapsody

Bands to expand your tastes:
Children of Bodom
Iron Maiden
Falconer
Eluveiti

pate 12-09-2008 12:01 PM

Doing by genre invites noobs and non-noobs to start bitching over genres.

"omg log is death metal this site is stoopid"

Permanent Solution 12-09-2008 12:03 PM

I think breaking it up in that way is a good way to set it up though...unless anyone else has ideas?

Maybe if I just kill the genre title as the headline, Just break it up into phases maybe? idk

pate 12-09-2008 12:06 PM

That sounds fine.

Could even go by vocal style.

"If you've never heard harsh vocals:
Band X
Band Y"

"If you've only heard Band X and Band Y:
Band Z"

and

"Gateway bands"

"Elite bands"

"Semi-elite bands"

AA-12 12-09-2008 12:11 PM

sorry vince but that's a horrible idea and won't acheive anything but MORE arguing. just let the noobs get flamed and if they are another more than a shitposter they'll be liked and get into better music.

Permanent Solution 12-09-2008 12:12 PM

I actually like the combination of lists in there.

So whatever people want to base their lists on, they can create one. Vocals, genre/style, whatever.

I guess I'll make a new thread for it though.

josh: see the thing is this forum is dying and given that we flame every new poster off the site, I'd rather not have us cause its death. I don't see how there will be more arguing. Plus once I post the final copy it will be closed, like the rules.

pate 12-09-2008 12:14 PM

Hell, when we get the thread made, sticky it and lock it.

Whitechapel447 12-09-2008 12:34 PM

that's a cool idea, but pate is right, noobs will bitch about bands like log and bfmv not being in the death metal, ya know

and besides, i didn't come here listening to linkin park and sh1t like that, but i got plenty of flaming at first and i complained about it a little but i learned to deal with it

flaming will happen on the internets

AA-12 12-09-2008 12:41 PM

^exactly. babying people on the internet is dumb.

ads and whatnot save forums. all we really need is the regulars anyway.

they can't complain if it's a locked thread tbh

flaming is silly though because then you just piss the other person off and they never get into other stuff and i know it might blow everyone's mind but when you get other people into good bands you're helping those good bands survive and make a living by spreading them around so i don't see how telling people that they suck and will never like good music helps anyone
