Stoner Rock was the most interesting form of rock n roll since the early 70's. Finally, musicianship was held at a premium. These bands just flat out jammed. Unfortunately, because that was deemed uncommercial, few people have heard of them. Check out these classic recordings:

KYUSS - Blues for the Red Sun
FU MANCHU - In Search of...
SLEEP - Holy Mountain
ORANGE GOBLIN - Time Traveling Blues
NEBULA - Into the Center
ATOMIC BITCHWAX - I
KARMA TO BURN - Karma to Burn
MONSTER MAGNET - Superjudge
AlienEater 01-06-2007 04:02 PM

I only heard the Boris Sun)))o thing and it's not too bad. What does Boris sound like anyway?

Apocalyptic Raids 01-07-2007 09:41 AM

Apparently Boris vary alot between albums, ask Bartender or Kage, they're big fans.

I might check out Altar.

pate 01-07-2007 11:38 AM

Boris has like half a million albums, and their sound is different on just about each one, ranging from drone to noise to stoner.

repcak 01-07-2007 11:40 AM

i haven't listen to sunn o))) or Shape of Despair for longer than a half year now... hm... maybe it was short before summer when i listened to them last... wow... i missed it.

the2stranger 01-07-2007 11:42 AM

Do so now, especially SoD.
Great band.

repcak 01-07-2007 12:00 PM

i just listen to Shape of Despair rightnow... Nights dew is still my favourite song by them!

the2stranger 01-07-2007 12:11 PM

Mine's probably Quiet These Paintings Are or ...To Live For My Death...

Hardhat 01-07-2007 02:27 PM

Shapes of Despair is awesome. I only have Shades of...

Is Quiet These Paintings Are good? If so, could someone upload it for the DU? It would be awesome if they could.

the2stranger 01-07-2007 02:28 PM

YES!
Very much.

It's of the Angels Of Distress album.

Shattered_Future 01-07-2007 03:50 PM

Very very good album.

I got kinda pissed though, because I bought their S/T one, and it's a bunch of demo tracks and alternate versions and ****. Which they didn't tell me on the back.

I only paid 5 bucks for it though, which was good.

the2stranger 01-08-2007 08:47 AM

5 bucks only?
Not so bad at all Mike, even if it's oly demo stuff and ****.

I have Angels Of Distress, Shades Of.. and Illusions Play.

Good stuff.

Patrick O))) 01-08-2007 09:05 AM

Kyuss ftw

Can I get a 123?

Iron Bars 01-08-2007 10:10 AM

Kyuss is great, I still need to get a copy of Blues for the red sun though.

repcak 01-08-2007 10:56 AM

pate 01-08-2007 11:23 AM

I don't like QOTSA hardly at all, but Kyuss is amazing.

Neoteric 01-08-2007 11:47 AM
Kyuss ftw

Phototropic 01-08-2007 11:48 AM

kyuss > everyone

Kyle 01-08-2007 11:49 AM

I think QOTSA are a good band with a few great songs, but they don't touch Kyuss in my eyes.

Bartender 01-08-2007 11:50 AM

I quite like Kyuss and I quite like QOTSA, but they both get mentioned far too often in here.

Kyle 01-08-2007 11:53 AM
I quite like Kyuss and I quite like QOTSA, but they both get mentioned far too often in here.
Heh, I can't keep up with some of your guys taste. It wasn't until I started reading this thread that I realised I really know nothing about Stoner/Doom.

exactly... lets go back to doom METAL :D

knuckleduster 01-08-2007 01:36 PM

Swallow the Sun's pretty good, though there is definitely better.

Shattered_Future 01-08-2007 01:47 PM
Swallow the Sun's pretty good, though there is definitely better.
Yeaaaaah...no.

Swallow The Sun is where it's at, foo.

knuckleduster 01-08-2007 01:51 PM

I find Shape of Despair more depressing and the singing on ...To Live For My Death is beautiful.

Shattered_Future 01-08-2007 01:54 PM

Swallow The Sun has much better writing, though. At least, I think so. The way they can create an atmosphere is unparalleled.

knuckleduster 01-08-2007 01:57 PM

Then I need to hear some more. Do you recommend any albums in particular?

Sleepy 01-08-2007 02:34 PM

They're pretty good. The Giant is a great track.

Kyuss is way better though. :D

The Morning Never Came. One of my favorite albums ever...it's unparalleled in recent years in the doom scene.

Hardhat 01-08-2007 05:10 PM

That CD is amazing. It's probably my favorite Doom album ever, it's at least in my Top 3. The cover art is just as good as the CD, too.

The cool thing about Swallow The Sun is that they don't drag their songs at ultra-slow tempos, so it's alot more accesible to people who aren't fans of doom. But they never sacrifice the gloomy and depressive/dark feel that doom is known for.

NP: Swallow The Sun-Through Her Silvery Body

I love the intro in this song.

Poofy 666 01-08-2007 05:11 PM

hardhat is fat

It's slow enough to be doom, but fast enough to be interesting. The fact that there's about 4 different things going on at any given time makes it all the more awesome.

knuckleduster 01-08-2007 07:48 PM

Thanks.
