LaBrie must get pretty board when they're developing new albums aswell as he only writes about one song per album.
He actually does play a part in writing the songs, not just the lyrics. I can't remember how it works exactly but Labrie, Myung and one of the others, I think Portnoy, get together to work on the rythmn or something. I can't remember exactly but he does do something, and I'm sure he writes a lot of the vocal melodies. And to answer the question on the last page about the report on the radio just before Nicholas is killed, that's about someone from the Kennedy family who died as they were recording the album. They used that sample just to show that that part of the album was in the present day, just so you don't get confused with all the switching between 2000/1928. |
1 Jaws of Life
2 Glasgow Kiss 3 Tunnel Vision 4 Wishful Thinking 5 Damage Control 6 Curve 7 Lost Without You 8 Animate-Inanimate Anyone know if that's meant to be good? I'm not a fan of what I've heard from the solo albums of DT members so far, but I've heard some good things about it (as well as some pretty harsh criticism as well). Craig-If you see Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory, I'd recommend getting that instead of Awake. The songs you mentioned are all good, but I regard that and Images And Words as clearly DT's best work.
would you like me to upload it for you? |

If you're talking about JP's solo album? Yeah, I think it's pretty good, I read somewhere on MX, if you think Petrucci just shreds, and has no emotion, listen to this album, I think that sums it up pretty well, there is some shredding for sure, but there are also some really nice more emotional songs too. He's got a really nice bassist I reckon, I dunno his name, but it's pretty cool. |
I am considering getting Awake or another DT album tommorow, I have a few songs on my computer, so I figured, "It's really time I got an album about now".
What (as a starter) would you recomend? I like: #1: The Glass Prison, #2: In The Name Of God, #3: The Ytse Jam, #4: Metropolis part 1, #5: Erotomania. Just as a brief overview, if you could recomend me an album based on those, that would be lovely :).
That's a broad range of songs because they all come from different albums. From that list I would recomend getting them all! (apart from When Dreams and Days Unite, which imo is pretty wank.. ) |
Yeah, I think it's definately worth it, I wish he did some of this kinda stuff for Dream Theater, especially Jaws of Life/Tunnel Vision
Edit: I have the first LTE album, I think Levin did an awesome job of playing with Petrucci. Weird question, but does Myung have anything other then Dream Theater? I think his work would be cool... |
Hello all!
I got Awake and Images & Words for £14, which is good. |
I like Awake better. But just a bit more than SFAM
I don't understand why people rate Awake so highly. It has a few OK tracks, but nothing amazing, definatly one of my least favourite DT albums. What do you people think are the best songs on the album? |
From what I've heard...
Erotomania, Space Dye Vest, The Mirror and The Silent Man. I'm listening to Images & Words now :). |
I never used to think much of Awake. I like all the albums but I didn't understand people listing that as their favourite. But now I do like it a lot, especially James' voice. It also shows how diverse they are, I had the Mirror in my playlist not long ago, just before it changed to something off SFAM. My favourite off it is Voices, but there isn't one song on this album I don't like. It's just a different style, and probably the one most unlike their others (except maybe ToT) which is maybe why some people don't like it much at first.

Personally, I hated it at first but it eventually grew on me with each listen until it was my favourite album. Scarred is definately my favourtie Awake song and probably one of my favourite DT songs overall. |

What do you people think are the best songs on the album?
To me Awake is one of their strongest albums. It may not start out great, but after Innocence Faded it really starts to shine. Scarred is possibly my favourite DT track just because of it's jazzy feel into great, heavy riffs. It works perfectly for me and Labrie is especially top-notch. Plus it has one of my favourite Petrucci solos nearer the end. I rate Awake equal with Six Degrees as my favourite DT album. |

I think his work would be cool...
Myung plays in The Jelly Jam. it's a sort of proggish rock band with Morgenstein on drums. I don't really rate his project high, way too poppy for my standards. but it's good technical wise nonetheless. they have two albums out. I suggest you check out Jordan Rudess solo stuff, esp. 4nyc which rocks really hard IMO. it's a live recording of a tribute thing for sept 11th, mixed with some studio stuff, since the live recordings weren't enough for a full length :) |
Yes! Finally some people who appreciate 'Scarred', the greatest Dream Theater song ever. 'Voices' is also a great song off of Awake. 'Space-Dye Vest' is criminally ignored by alot of people, but it's such a beautiful song, and makes me regret the fact that Kevin Moore ever left the band. Don't get me wrong, Jordan Rudess is great, but Awake and Images And Words was definately Dream Theater's highest point.
|
Don't get me wrong, Jordan Rudess is great
Not really, he can't write like Moore. Sure he can play 3x faster, but who cares? Scarred is an amazing song, I love Space Dye Vest, not as big on Voices though. Lifting Shadows Off A Dream is probably my favorite song on Awake. And Myung wrote the lyrics :thumb: |

Rudess beats Moore out of the water as far as technical skill goes, but I did enjoy Moore's songwriting a lot more than Rudess'. and on top of that he contributed wonderfull lyrics. so everyone who cares even a tiny bit about him should certainly check out O.S.I |
I think that 'Voices' has some really amazing lyrics, probably my favourite penned by Petrucci. I agree about Rudess being more technically proficient, but I would rather listen to stuff with Moore contributing to it musically. I think that Rudess is more suited to stuff like LTE and his solo stuff than Dream Theater. I've still got to check out O.S.I, do Portnoy and Moore both play in that?

yes, Portnoy plays too, although he doesn't have is huge DT kit, ot does stuff as technical as DT, it's still great IMO. there is a load of other musicians who have contributed to this cd, Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree is one of them he contributes background vocals on one song, but I think he gave some subtle hints on the songwriting department too, cause some parts osund quite PT like :) |
Awake is awesome because of the whole Erotomania, Voices and The Silent man thingy. Scarred, Space Dye Vest, Lifting Shadows of a Dream, Lie (omfg solo=pwn) and almsot every other song on there.
Good songs make an album good. |
Contrary to what most people will say, I think Erotomania and Voices are the weakest songs on Awake.
|
I got Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence yesterday and after listening to it a few times, I must say
   Dream Theater is amazing. |
The best thing about Awake was that they had Kevin Moore still....And all the above mention songs. Kevin was much more suited for the band than Jordan IMO.
|
If you're offering, that would be cool, as I can't see me going out and buying it without hearing it first. I'm a bit too sceptical about it to do that.
 Yeah, I noticed that as well. Thanks for making it easy for us to tell you which album (s) to try and get, IWJPBWB. :p Ah, this sounds promising. It would be really intimidating to be the bassist for JP's solo stuff...not only having to work with him, but also living up to Myung and his standard would be very difficult.
ok I shall upload it :thumb: |
The best thing about Awake was that they had Kevin Moore still....And all the above mention songs. Kevin was much more suited for the band than Jordan IMO.
I don't really see what the debate is about, Awake is a really good, if not slightly diverse album. |
I got Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence yesterday and after listening to it a few times, I must say
   Dream Theater is amazing.
That album owns, 'Blind Faith' is a great song. I'm not too big on the second disc, but all my friends seem to love it. |

   Dream Theater is amazing.
Heyhey. Glad you agree :thumb: . The second CD is mindblowing. In my opinion, 6:00 and Innocence Faded are the weakest. And LSOAD is another great track. |

6:00 is amazing, at the moment my favourite song off that album is probbably Scarred or Space Dye Vest. |

Take out the annoying voice samples, and you've got me a tune. |
Quick question for all...I've heard bad things about Falling Into Infinity. Is it worth downloading, or even listening to? From what I've heard, I don't want to buy it...i would be interested in hearing it though.

In my opinion, Falling Into Infinity is definantly worth downloading, and even buying. Falling Into Infinity shows the bands more "emotional" side, and has some great songs (Hell's Kitchen, Lines In The Sand, Trial Of Tears). Personally, it's one of my favorites. |

There's one of my attempts at the first third or so of the Glass Prison arpeggios. A couple spots my mind just went totally blank though  |
you are good at guitar man.
That was very good :thumb: |

Half of the album is quality Dream Theater that you would expect from them, but the rest of the tracks are basically fillers. Very pop-y fillers in my opinion (for DTs standard). Songs like Hells Kitchen, Lines in the Sand and Peruvian skies are great. LITS is one of my favourite DT songs (along with Scarred) and also has another classic solo for JP. |

My friend has met him and my friend asked 'are there any solos that you dont look forward to playing because they are so hard?' and his response was "the sweeped solo in Glass Prison". |
that solo is indeed so awesome, and I'd reckon it to be very hard to play (doesnt play guitar)
the jazzy guitar solo in blind faith is so cool too, as well as the piano solo. |

Woah, that's cool. Apparently at one of their performances at Gigantour, he screwed up the intro arps and they didn't play the song again that tour. (I think..) |
