I want to be a sound engineer

Wintermute 02-10-2005 09:44 AM

I'm training to be one even now. I've got a Synthetic and Computer Audio Engineering Theory lecture later on today.

Last week's lecture was awesome. We spent the whole thing watching a Goldfrapp DVD, listening to Pink Floyd, The Who and Led Zeppelin. I think the lecturer was a little un-nerved that I could identify every song within a few seconds.

On The Run, Baba O'Reilly and No Quarter were all groundbreaking songs in the use of synthesizers, you see.

Kingofdudes 02-10-2005 09:48 AM

I really need to look into what I need to do to get into Engineering. I dont have any idea where I am going to go to college for it, or what courses to take.

I may experiment with recording this summer, when I have the money to buy my own cheap equipment.

Edit: Mason gets credit for "On the Run", but Roger claims he didnt do too much for it. I wonder who deserves the real credit for it.

Wintermute 02-10-2005 09:51 AM

How old are you? What stage are you at now?

My Uni has two courses, one which requires Music A level, and the other requires Maths A level. I'm on the Maths one - it focuses more on the technical side of things. The idea is we come out of it equally well equipped to use fancy equipment, or design fancy equipment. It's a 5 year Masters degree.

Kingofdudes 02-10-2005 09:53 AM

16, I guess I am at a pretty low stage. My highest math at the moment is Pre-Calc, and I am in Music Theory at the moment.

Are you working with Digital or Analog recording? Just curious, all I've done so far is analog, since I dont have the cash to set my computer up for good multi track recording..

Wintermute 02-10-2005 01:50 PM

Analogue at this stage, though we branch into digital next year.

That said I've been doing some low level digital recording of my own - my laptop now sports a frankly terrifying array of audio software.

You're exactly where I'm at

Yeah, No-Quarter is one hell of a song. Probably my favorite Zeppelin song period. What college you go to anyways?

I wanted to be an engineer for the past few years, like mechanical stuff, but now I'm thinking about Audio Engineering. I'd love to work in a studio and experiment with effects and stuff. Is that what you guys are talking about?

And Wintermute, what kind of classes did you start with to take that type of course work? Is there a certain engineering class you need to begin with?

And I'd looove to get my hands on an old VCS3 synth, but they really expensive and hard to find now. That would be awesome.

Scooch 02-10-2005 02:45 PM

Has anyone heard the "Take Linda Surfin'" album, I did a search and didn't see anyone mention it. It has to be the creepiest album I've ever heard, it sounds like music you'd play at hallo'ween. It also came with a a colouring book page that's called the Official Pink Floyd SuperSonic Cosmic Surfboard Kit, I'll scan a picture of it in a bit.

I thought about doing that degree, but it involved moving from my excellent home town to a crappy big city. :(

If you ever need help with maths, Aaron, just ask. I did do Advanced Maths in University, after all.
I would imagine Mason can take quite a lot of credit for On The Run, although that's based largely on the fact that Waters marginalised him to such an extent that I don't think you can take much he says about Mason and Wright all that seriously, which is a genuine shame. And completely off topic, we seem to have lured Wintermute out of the bass forum.
Mason and Wright were seriously underrated by Waters. It's a shame that it ocurred like that. And I can take some kind of credit for Wintermute's defection to the Floyd thread... :p

guitarded_chuck 02-10-2005 04:26 PM

So I just checked my latest reps, and I can see 5 neg reps for calling the Tool retards that messed up the polls fanboys. My rep is now down to 84. Meh, doesn't matter, but man those kids are annoying.

Wintermute 02-10-2005 04:27 PM

I'm at the University of Glamorgan, or Prifysgol Morgannwg, as it is in Welsh. I had next to no engineering experience before I started here - they prefer it, but they don't demand it.

As for leaving the bass forum... well, you've got to have some variety, haven't you! :p

Yeah they are, trying to cheat internet polls... Why would you bother?

Sound like an awesome school

I need to find one for me :-/

/teen stress

Six Foot Revolver 02-10-2005 04:32 PM

Not sure, but it is stupid as hell. It's a bit of fun for christ sake!

Riva 02-10-2005 04:34 PM

So Wintermute, Bartender tells me you are the one to discuss all things beer with, especially the virtues of Cold beer vs Warm beer.

DeusExMachina 02-10-2005 04:35 PM
Same for slipknot too...maybe.

I think they have enough members as an orchestra.
Please tell me you're kidding. Orchestras > Slipknot in EVERY way.

I'm really into recording stuff, but I don't know enough about it. I want to though. How hard is it to get into a program like that? I'm currently 17, have lots of knowledge of music theory, and am in calculus.

3rdplanet 02-10-2005 04:45 PM

*late*

Were Pink Floyd there and playing during the recording for the RPO covers?

Wintermute 02-10-2005 04:50 PM

I have pretty strong tastes in beer, that's for certain. Of course, we're talking beer here. Not watery chemical urine soup.*

Ever been to the Hoffbrau (sp?) House in Germany?

Best. Beer Drinking Place. Ever.

DeusExMachina 02-10-2005 07:03 PM

I haven't tried it much, but I've never really gotten into beer. Just, too bitter for me.

Distant Echoes 02-10-2005 07:07 PM

And i thought i was the only one that didnt like beer

TrainTakeMeHome 02-10-2005 07:19 PM

I'm interested in seeing how many of you PFers out there like Tool as well. I've noticed a large amount of Tool fans enjoy PF, i wonder if the inverse is true as well..

Otherside 02-10-2005 07:26 PM

The two bands are actually pretty similair... and their both some of the best bands ever.

pigonthewing82 02-10-2005 07:31 PM

I love Tool, but I'm sure that any true Pink Floyd fan prefers them over Tool, and thats why all us Pink Floyd fans are bitching, well and because those cheaters just suck

Sam 02-10-2005 07:55 PM

I cant stand tool. Pink Floyd are one of my faves.

Tool is just...Tool.

PeenkPhloide 02-10-2005 08:09 PM

Hey everyone. I am doing another brick part 2 for out schools variety show thingy. How would you suggest starting it off? my drummer kinda just started in january, but he said that happiest days of our lives is too hard for him. So should we start with just the drums for abinw or drums with that funky guitar riff? or i could start off by doing the melody really slowly... what do you guys think?...uh thanks

guitarded_chuck 02-10-2005 08:23 PM

I don't mind Tool, but I really don't believe they are one the greatest bands ever. Just another rock band, with some extra talent. I don't see anything extra special to make them great. What I do see is too many 10 year old kids with Tool wristbands.

Johnny B. Good 02-10-2005 08:26 PM

Why are we talking about Tool in a Pink Floyd thread?

PeenkPhloide 02-10-2005 08:29 PM

what are those stars under some ppls names?

pigonthewing82 02-10-2005 08:29 PM
Why are we talking about Tool in a Pink Floyd thread?
Who knows? Why were we talking about beet before? Things just come up. Besides you would have to thought they would come up soon enough in the thread after all the Tool bashing from Pink Floyd fans

Johnny B. Good 02-10-2005 08:31 PM
what are those stars under some ppls names?
It means they're cool
Back on subject, What do you guys like best early Gilmour's work or later Gilmour's work? later will be Wish You Were Here and on from there

guitarded_chuck 02-10-2005 08:32 PM
Why are we talking about Tool in a Pink Floyd thread?
Why not? They're often compared, so we're giving our opinion. Especially since the Tool vs Floyd battle in the Top 100 poll.

This is a Pink Floyd thread not a Tool thread that's why

PeenkPhloide 02-10-2005 08:34 PM

i like all of it really...but moreso the latter stuff

pigonthewing82 02-10-2005 08:38 PM

I like his early work better, well just because it includes Echoes

lunch998 02-10-2005 08:39 PM

So, SOYCD 6-9 is awesome. Anyone agree?

PeenkPhloide 02-10-2005 08:41 PM
