What dost thou mean? Elaborate, with examples, if thou wilst, good Sir
Bohunk, bug-eyed Betty, dinge, Ethel, jigaboo, kike, mick, ofay, Reuben...

There's probably more I'm forgetting.

Iron Bars 09-02-2005 09:36 AM
I am, thou art, he is, we are, you are, they are. It hasn't changed that much really - we've lost the familiar 2nd person "thou". The Germans still have it in the word "du", and the similarity is obvious when you consider
German "Du hast" - you (familiar) have
Old English - "Thou hast" - you (familiar) have
You should be glad they scrapt that out of english along with the plolitness verbs. We still have them and it's (for foreigners) the most anying concept to pick up.

Kike I know, mick is obvious, and jigaboo is still used in HM Forces a lot - the others I must confess I've never come across.

Yup, we're quite glad. English must be the easiest language in the world to speak, but the hardest to spell!

Here's the run-down on the ones you haven't heard:

Bohunk - Eastern European
Bug-eyed Betty - ugly girl
Dinge - black
Ethel - effeminate/gay (precursor to fag, coined a decade or so later)
Ofay - white (eventually lost the derogatory meaning)
Reuben - white trash (Hillbillies specifically)

Kronos 09-02-2005 10:57 AM

Thanks for that - I'm always up for learning new vocabulary. BTW, is dinge pronounced as in cringe?

I will always be pleased to help with anything else like that.
Where do you come from?
edit - sorry now I can see; Greece.
Thanks for that - I'm always up for learning new vocabulary. BTW, is dinge pronounced as in cringe?
Yes. It's taken from the adjective "dingey" as in, covered in soot and dirt. It's a slur against black people by insulting the color of their skin.

Kronos 09-02-2005 12:56 PM
Yes. It's taken from the adjective "dingey" as in, covered in soot and dirt. It's a slur against black people by insulting the color of their skin.
Yes, one of our derogatory terms for black people is sooties, so there's commonality there. Every culture likes putting others down - in China they call Westerners a word that means cattle, because they maintain that we smell like them. Don't expect these terms will ever stop completely :upset:

Lord Abortion 09-02-2005 04:04 PM

Well, this thread went in an odd direction...

Stoic 09-02-2005 04:10 PM

I wonder if anyone in here likes ABBA. I downloaded a metal tribute to them mostly by power metal bands which unfortunately are not quite popular in here.

Therion, Sinergy, Morgana Lefay, Paradox, At Vance, Rough Silk, Metalium, Tad Morose, Custard and a few others

I like Abba; their songs are well written and have good structure - and most have an indescribable "sing along" quality. I'd love to hear some "heavied-up" Abba! Any chance of an upload or two?

I don't mind being older than most, I don't mind being married (In fact, being married to my wife is great), but where did the "crap" come from? How do I deserve that?

Lord Abortion 09-02-2005 04:35 PM

Nothing really, it's just like saying "and stuff" to me, sorry if you (or your ladywife took any offence by it)
just my odd mix of upper class English and Machine head style Americanisms...

Sure, sure! I've been literally obsessed with Abba and there's no one to share my love with  Their songs stick to your head to the point of madness and do really good power metal covers.

Hail to ABBA, the most metal pop band to walk the planet!

haha yeah, Abba's awesome :D. I grew up listening to them, they were only of the few things my parents were in to that wasn't classical music. I'd love to hear some stuff from that Abba tribute album, other than Sinergy's cover of Gimme Gimme.

Stoic 09-02-2005 05:16 PM

My mom used to play their vinyls a lot when I was little this is why some of their songs sound extremely familiar to me. Have you heard Malmsteen's cover for Gimme Gimme Gimme? It's so much better than Sinergy's.

for uploads watch my post above ;)

Nope, I haven't. Could you upload it?
I forsee lots of sweep picked arpeggios....

That Voulez Vous song's sending memories of my childhood flooding back to me. That Morgan Lefay cover isn't bad :p
I still like what Sinergy did with Gimme Gimme Gimme better though.

Stoic 09-02-2005 05:35 PM

What I dont like about Sinergy are the vocals, they kind of ruin the band and the cover :p Tell me what you think of At Vance's cover :D Malmsteen's one on the way!

alright, added ;)

goodnight all

Slapping Penguin 09-02-2005 06:51 PM
Penguin - "thee" does not mean "I". It is used in the accusative instead of the nomnative variant, "thou" examples
Thou art a vile knave - nomnative case
I gave it to thee - accusative case
Hope that help with your fake old english
FUC! thats why I said fake Old English, but I truly hoped thee would not look at it as English but as the langauge of the Wizards of the High Council. What did thou think of ones names though.

(Look Men of the Council this thread isn't going to work endless we live power metellum)

Hells Bells 09-02-2005 06:54 PM

That's what I like most about Sinergy :p Although I like the operatic style most female vocalists use, it's great to hear Kim Goss do something different.
I'm not familiar with late Helloween...but yes...that At Vance cover rocks :D
I can't say much about the Malmsteen cover, seeing as how YSI is saying that the link is invalid

I've gotta buy that Abba tribute album.

Shattered_Future 09-02-2005 07:04 PM

What about Charon? They have a female backup singer...quite a good band as well.
I wish people would stop calling Avenged Sevenfold Power Metal, especially that dumbarse KittensInMicrowaves.
It's rather irritating. I've listened to an Avenged Sevenfold song, the riffage of which could have been power metal to an extent but for god's sake the feeling is totally different. I doubt this guy (or whoever calls such bands power metal) has any idea of the genre.

Huber 09-03-2005 01:12 PM
I wish people would stop calling Avenged Sevenfold Power Metal, especially that dumbarse KittensInMicrowaves.
That guy is pretty closed minded at times.

I hadn't listened to any PM in like ages until yesterday I listened to some Dragonforce, and I need more!

I know I need Blind Guardian from all I've heard. Is there stuff accessible, like in a Best Buy or something? I work near one and it'd be convenient.

Stoic 09-03-2005 01:14 PM

I'm not sure about Dragonforce but Blind Guardian should not be hard to find :)
