Woah Jesu's new EP is the best thing they've ever put out.

Nevermind I still like Silver more.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-14-2007 05:18 PM

Oh so I listened to the new Pelican again and they still fail. I do enjoy their drummer though, he's got some really unique (not that interesting, just unique) rhythms. The guitarwork shines in certain places, but overall, I am not typically that impressed or intrigued by them. My favorite song off the album is Winds With Hands. I guess they should just become a folk band or something.

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 05:19 PM

The folkish guitar parts are the only thing that makes Far From Fields as good as it is. Australasia is still killer, but they've just gone down the path of tired and generic.

TojesDolan 06-14-2007 05:20 PM

Neurisican bands in general are gay.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-14-2007 05:21 PM

What was that?

Kage 06-14-2007 05:22 PM

Not really, especially not the three referred to in the term itself.

Neur(osis)is(is)(pel)ican

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 05:22 PM

It's ok, Tojes just wanted to sound smart.

TojesDolan 06-14-2007 05:24 PM

The three are OK but the other bands are crap.

And no Quorthance, I was just eager to use the word.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-14-2007 05:24 PM

Oh I'm only familar with NeurISIS, which is gay, i much prefer Neurisican.

Actually if I start a post rock band, that would be a good name. I'll make it hella generic and/or a complete ripoff.

Kage 06-14-2007 05:25 PM

I first learned that term from an interview with Toby Driver.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-14-2007 05:34 PM

Haha that's awesome. I've probably read it, but I bet I was like "oh he's just being pretentious, that's why I don't know what that means."

:h5:

Anyway, Toby Driver would hate you Jake. :[

Kage 06-14-2007 05:37 PM

Yeah, he was asked about bands Kayo Dot was touring with and he said something to the effect of, "Mostly we've been paired with a bunch of lame Neurisican bands."

I like a lot of Neurisican bands but I can't say they're all that muiscally exciting anymore. Just good to scratch that certain itch.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-14-2007 06:06 PM

Yeah so speaking of non Neurisican post rock bands, let us decide: Is Pirate Ship Quintet generic or not?

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 06:14 PM

They rip off Lift Your Skinny Fists pretty bad. They're awesome as **** though. I think I've posted this, but this is the only way to listen to Pirate Ship Quintet:

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-14-2007 06:17 PM

I think a lot of people nowadays are associating crescendos with generic now. I mean sure there are tons of post rock bands using the same formula, but there are also many of those bands that, on the individual scale, have great musicians that right awesome parts. PSQ is one of those bands. The string player has some very unique melodies, and their trumpet player achieves brilliant tone and has very good dynamic control. Their guitarist does a lot of typical effect-driven stuff, but he's definitely not a weak link.

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 06:23 PM

I don't really base my generic calling on structure, just sound. Like how Kage says Pelican isn't generic because they don't follow the build up structure anymore, I say they are because they just play the same clean riffs followed by the same metal riffs that all post metal bands are doing these days, where back on Australasia they played sludgy riffs with a fairly unique identity.

PSQ sounds a whole hell of a lot like GYBE on Skinny Fists, but there aren't a ton of bands that do that sound correctly. So, they're not very generic, but they're definitely not doing anything completely new. But the music is beautiful and moving, so I will always love it. The trumpets are the best part.

Kage 06-14-2007 10:38 PM

This is the first time I've heard them and it sounds awesome! Anyone have any uploads?

Like Anthony said the trumpets ****ing kill.

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 10:46 PM

I will tomorrow night.

Kage 06-14-2007 11:12 PM

Awesome.

Txus 06-14-2007 11:13 PM

Do you guys like Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies?

Kage 06-14-2007 11:15 PM

Beats me.

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 11:15 PM

Not really. Boring run of the mill math rock.

Kage 06-14-2007 11:17 PM

Hey, 'fini, do you like Just a Smorgasbord of Recognition?

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 11:19 PM

I have no idea who that is.

Kage 06-14-2007 11:21 PM

Okay, lol, just making sure you don't pretend to have listened to bands.

Txus 06-14-2007 11:21 PM

Ahh, I'm liking the two albums I have....meh :(

Nepenthe 06-14-2007 11:21 PM

Thanks for lookin out.

I make it seem like I've heard alot more music than I have by saying something about every single band that's brought up that I've heard. Even if I have to repeat the same thing multiple times in a period of a couple months (which I've done many times). If I don't say anything about what's being discussed, it means I haven't heard it.

Kyle 06-15-2007 07:23 AM

I like Youthmovies quite a bit, but I think that's maybe because they're fairly local and play a lot of shows.
