The Ataris - So Long Astoria

JonM 02-18-2007 09:30 PM

My list isn't very interesting this week because most of my listening was portable, but suffice it to say I like the new Of Montreal record a lot.

samthebassman 02-18-2007 10:19 PM

What the hell are all the lists? I dont understand.

perriwinkle 02-18-2007 10:24 PM

check out last.fm (that is the url, it'll work)

you can download a client for whatever media player you use that will log all the songs you listen to and display your lsitening patterns on your profile. itll show recently played stuff, top bands for the week, top bands in general, etc.

the lists people post in here are their weekly top artist lists

The Knife - Deep Cuts

So far I'm liking it more than Silent Shout and it's pretty alright. With the exception of "You Take My Breath Away" and "Rock Classics" being quirky fun, and "Heartbeats", which is just too good to be true.

mr_jackalope 02-18-2007 11:21 PM

1 The Verlaines 20
2 Joy Division 18
3 The Mountain Goats 16
4 The Velvet Underground 15
5 The Triffids 13
6 Neil Young 11
6 The Field Mice 11
6 The Raincoats 11
9 Swell Maps 8
9 The The 8

Today so far I've listened to the Mekons' Fear and Whiskey and that NME C86 compilation with a bunch of indie rock from mid-80s Britain. It's pretty wicked.

Nick Drake - Pink Moon

Boris - Pink

Been listening to Sunn O))) a little too. I think I'll go to the show, it's relatively cheap for a show over here and plus I think I know someone who would want to go with me.

Blonde Redhead
Blonde Redhead
I'm really excited for their new release.

It should be great.

mr_jackalope 02-19-2007 01:01 AM

I'd put the new Dinosaur Jr. after YLAOM, Bug, and Green Mind at this point. It's a surprisingly solid album, though, and may move up after I get a few more listens in.

br3ad_man 02-19-2007 01:36 AM

Jesu - Conqueror

One of the best of the year so far, for sure.

Converge - Petitioning the Empty Sky

Bartender 02-19-2007 10:23 AM

I've been liking Grace/Jeff Buckley less and less recently. Slowly coming to the conclusion that I just don't like his voice. Pretty sure now that Agalloch suck, too, though for different reasons.

Skyscraper - Superstate
Heavy, catchy, riffy rock by a 90s British band; can't seem to find much information about either the band or the album, which is a shame, as it's great stuff.

Guillemots - Through a Windowpane has been growing on me more and more since my first listen. Said first listen really wasn't the kind of thing I was expecting. Still not sure how much I like it, though.

Blank Generation was good, but a bit of a disappointment; Los Angeles is no kind of a disappointment at all. I've been getting sucked in more and more to Rubber Soul, to the point where it's getting close to being as good as Revolver, though I'm still not sure. And the white album continues to be infuriatingly inconsistent. That's all I can think of/be bothered to write.

Kyle 02-19-2007 10:28 AM

I have new Dino J 4th, but only because I have some strange infatuation with Where You Been?

Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead

Definitely helping me wake up this morning.

Repetition with boring parts does not make those boring parts any less boring.

JonM 02-19-2007 11:44 AM

I'm digging this new Apples In Stereo record. I've never listened to them before today, but I checked out this new one because of these two "Non-Pythagorean Compositions" on it. The dude made up new notes with a synth and wrote these two pieces that are crazy and beautiful with musical sounds you've never heard before. And the rest of the record is pretty good, too.

Any fans in the house that can point me in the direction of further Apples In Stereo?

asdf 02-19-2007 11:45 AM

The Doors - The Soft Parade

I heard the title track in a friend's car the other night and I really enjoyed it. For whatever reason I never got into the doors, but that song kind of struck me, so I decided to download the whole album, even though my friend informed me it was probably their least successful album.

JonM 02-19-2007 12:32 PM

Yeah I'm starting to get the impression that they're not as good as I would hope a band that invents tuning systems for its compositions would be.

asdf 02-19-2007 01:05 PM

Frank Zappa - Over-nite Sensation
The Residents - Tunes of Two Cities

It's been forever since I've listened to either.

Yeah Deep Cuts rulezzzzzzz. Got 2 Let U is awesome too. I dont think I could pick between their albums, though. They both are sooo good.

I'm busting out The Shape Of Punk To Come again, such a great record.

asymm 02-19-2007 04:08 PM

Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking
Great folk-rock album, "A Sailor's Life" has a beautiful breakdown in it's last half. Emotive and fluid.

perriwinkle 02-19-2007 04:31 PM

whose hairy, pensive face is that?

also, i busted out sky valley because im looking for fluid works to play that i havent listened to in a while since im gonna be sittin here doing math for at least a few hours. i still think odyssey / conan troutman / N.O. / whitewater is the best movement. and sky cadet is sweeet

im gonna keep the trend up with some dark side of the moon next

its probably been a full year since i've listened to that album

Eliminator 02-19-2007 04:32 PM

i've been meaning to get that fairport convention album
Repetition with boring parts does not make those boring parts any less boring.
They just seem to be almost entirely lacking in energy. Like there's things going on, but all the players/singers sound really listless. They seem barely awake most of the time.

But yeah, that too.

Eliminator 02-19-2007 04:53 PM

Wilco - Being There

one of the best albums ever forreal

sr800bkBassist 02-19-2007 05:20 PM
