I find the two bonus tracks to be right on par with Harvest. Lately I'm liking them even more, but most likely because I've known Harvest for a long time and these songs are brand new to me. Harvest was the song that first caught my attention on BWP though. :D

Face of Melidnda always sounded odd to me. It's good...but strange for some reason. Anyhoo, I usually skip right to The Moor, Serenity Painted Death, and White Cluster.
You skip to The Moor?

:p
You skip to The Moor?

:p
If I don't feel like listening to ambience for like 2 minutes, then I also skip it.

What Solefald album did you hear?
Red For Fire - An Icelandic Journey was what prompted the comment.
Personally, I think the insturmentation of Harvest is too boring to be salvaged simply by Akerfeldt's vocals.
I disagree. I think that the simplicity of it serves the song very well, especially standing next to songs like "Bleak." It's a breath of fresh air.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-04-2006 06:43 PM

I love Bleak. What don't you like about Bleak?

PS: Red for Fire is gold. Sun I Call is one of my favorite songs of alllllllll time. \m/

pate 10-04-2006 06:44 PM

I think he means the complexity of Bleak. As in, the simplicity of Harvest sits well next to complex pieces, like Bleak.

Det_Nosnip 10-04-2006 06:49 PM

Exactly. Bleak is one of my favorite tracks. :D

What I like about "Harvest" is that it demonstrates that the band can craft a beautiful, emotional tune without having to go overboard.

I bought Orchid recently. I'm suprised. Wasn't sure I'd like it as much as their later efforts. In Mist She Was Standing and Under the Weeping Moon are badass songs.

Shadows 10-04-2006 07:03 PM

Definitely. Orchid is one of the most criminally underrated albums ever.

132WalrusesInMexico 10-04-2006 07:21 PM

I just got Morningrise today, it's pretty good so far.

pate 10-04-2006 07:32 PM

Orchid and MR are at the bottom of the Opeth album pecking order IMO.

Apocalypticon 10-04-2006 07:35 PM
Definitely. Orchid is one of the most criminally underrated albums ever.
I would have to agree with you completely on that one. In Mist She Was Standing is my favourite Opeth song and that album features alot of other really good ones like The Twilight is my Robe and The Apostle in Triumph.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-04-2006 07:41 PM

I can't get into Orchid at all. It just seems so drab compared to the vibe I get from their later releases.

Apocalypticon 10-04-2006 07:45 PM

I find for me it is almost the complete opposite of that. I don't necessarily think of Orchid as the most accessible opeth album, but I find that it does something for me that none of the other can do(except MAYH). Morningrise has always been the Opeth album that has stiffled me the most. I still can't get into and can't listen to it all the way through, to long and towards the end to boring.

Shattered_Future 10-04-2006 07:46 PM

Orchid I could never really get into. Morningrise too for the most part, save TBYF. I think it's cause I started with the later albums first...those have somewhat of an easier acceptance factor in them.

Blackwater Park and Still Life are both great, but I find myself listening to My Arms, Your Hearse the most. Probably because When is so mind-numbingly good and my favorite Opeth song ever. :)

Kage 10-04-2006 08:12 PM

Bah. When is nothing but a powerchord fest served up on loud drums.

Shadows 10-04-2006 08:12 PM

^barre chord*

It also has some fantastic clean vocals and melodic leads.

I find damn near every riff on Orchid completely entrancing.

Thor 10-04-2006 08:16 PM

Most Orchid riffs are pretty sweet, but some of the stuff on "The Twilight Is My Robe" gets tired after a while.

The first two tracks on the album are pure ownage, though.

Apocalypticon 10-04-2006 08:19 PM

The first song is pure ownage, the second however I would have to say isn't. I'm not a very big fan of Under The weeping Moon, its a good song up until the part past the middle where it gets really repetetive and just drones on and on, and its not very good live.

EDIT: In Mist She was Standing was the best Opeth intro riffs of them all.

Thor 10-04-2006 08:22 PM

I wouldn't imagine that song being the best live (I've just heard there's tons of feedback during that part), but I think it's a really awesome song on the album. I just love the atmosphere and ambiance of that album. It just sounds so creepy and evil. It's as if you're wandering through a dark, freezing forest at night and you hear the rustling of leaves and the moaning of trees.

And the intro riff in "In The Mist Was Standing" is so good that I learned how to play it. And I don't play guitar. :)

Shadows 10-04-2006 08:22 PM

Every Orchid song is pure mastery. It took years for the album to grow on me, but now that it has it's easily one of my favorites by Opeth.

Kage 10-04-2006 08:22 PM

I disagree I think it's total shit.

Thor 10-04-2006 08:24 PM

It's an enjoyable album, but Akerfeldt's vocals got exponentially better over time. That's one of the drawbacks from their first few albums. His clean vocals weren't nearly as refined as they are now.

Stormrider 10-04-2006 08:24 PM

I remember Orchid was the first Opeth album that I wanted. I still don't have it. That and My Arms you Hearse are definitely the next Opeth albums I'm buying though. I see them in stores now aswell, which is really good.

Though that may be true, I think when it comes to his harsh vocals nothing beats the Orchid/Morningrise era Opeth. His vocals have that hint of old school death that just makes them that much better then the current ones. With the later stuff the vocals are kinda flip flopped from the early stuff. Clean stuff is really good but the growls are kinda generic.

Eliminator 10-04-2006 08:57 PM

His growls on ghost shitteries is generic

Otherwise you're wrong.

Apocalypticon 10-04-2006 09:01 PM

Ghost Reveries they're generic, Deliverance they're generic and a very very small amount off BWP are generic.

Eliminator 10-04-2006 09:15 PM

The growling on BWP is better than that on any of their other albums.

Orchid makes Kenny G. seem exciting.

i am the robots 10-04-2006 09:15 PM

You have to be kidding me.

Orchid (the band and the Opeth album both) and Kenny G. > you.
