i like Aenima more than Lateralus, though both are great.

listen to the record several times and you will like it. the more you listen to it, the more you will love it. that's always the same when listening to a new record.

The Flabbit Rides High 08-29-2005 05:38 AM

I like Aenima more than Lateralus aswell.

I think he sings if more emotion on that album. On Lateralus he kinda sounds robotic.

Its not a bad thing, I just like other style better.

Then there is all the rumours about the new singing style. arghhh

Rounder 08-29-2005 05:48 AM
same here on my Ænima cd. the scratch is on the end of the cd so when it gets to the part where maynards starts singing "so good to see you" thats when it starts to skip. so i have to yet get another one.
between me and my briother, i think weve been through 2 opiates, 3 undertows, like 6 Aenima's, and 3 Lateralus. We've managed to keep Salival intact somehow.

Rounder 08-29-2005 05:54 AM
Bought Aenima. Quite frankly, I'm a little dissapointed in it. I love Lateralus, Aenima just seemed like a "nothing" album. Nothing really stood out and it seemed a little try-hard to me, as in they were trying hard to be wierd.

I'll probably love it after a few more spins. However it's gonna have to pry "Scenes from a Memory" from my hands first.
Dream Theater is a classic example of a band that's trying too hard (at least on the last 3 albums). Tool is beautiful in it's subtlety. I've heard people say before how they though Tool was weird, that though never crossed my mind. I see Tool as art, and the songs are kind of like paintings, especially on Aenima. I always thought Aenima was the most subtle of all Tool records. It's a little dark, but it is still positive. Most of the songs are coming from a perspective of being in a negative space looking for the positive in the situation.

Macka80 08-29-2005 06:18 AM

I definately don't agree on that!
Although, none of the albums touch anywhere close as their earlier recordings, I think it's just like with Tool, they went in a different direction, maybe Dream Theater's won't pay off as much as Tool's..

kurrpt 08-29-2005 07:39 AM

yea.... i saw Dream Theater this weekend...

and whoever said that is a fukking knob.

From a muscian's standpoint, greatest band ever....

Moses 08-29-2005 07:44 AM

Dream Theater is probably the best band I've seen live. I mean they just leave you floored. It's not even the technicality of the music that leaves you floored, it's just the music in general. Alot of people were probably impressed by their virtuosity but some how they just really delivered.

Huber 08-29-2005 07:45 AM

Is Octavarium that disappointing or are people over-reacting?

actually for me, its a culmination of everything. I get a lot of inspiration from petrucci. It actually fuels me to stay up a lot and just tackle problems head on, and not giving up.

It seems so effortless for them. They are also not flashy and over the top, as like the Dilinger Escape Plan was, who were terrible
Is Octavarium that disappointing or are people over-reacting?
people just like to put them down to make themselves feel better in comparison

Chu 08-29-2005 07:48 AM

I have no problem with it, it's still a good album in my opinion.

denboy 08-29-2005 07:48 AM

Man.. I just got overly bored of Dream theater after being a huge fan of them for 2 years.. I can't even listen to their new cd all the way through

i really dont listen to any of their CDs the whole way through. To me, id rather see them live then pop in their CD.

Really?!
For me it's like the exact opposite, to listen to their CDs I have to listen to the whole thing, especially with Scenes From a Memory.

I usually save Dream Theater for when I go for a walk (About 3 times a week, I walk about 8ks to a golf course :p).

Moses 08-29-2005 07:53 AM
And when you do that, could you upload 46&2 seperately, for my Featured Song?

whoever "you" are. :p

With Dream Theater I usually listen to individual songs. Awake is becoming my favorite from them. When I saw them live it was just such a good show even with the virtuosity aspect left out. I mean some parts were just such a sonic orgasm and hearing it live it just left me with my jaw to the floor.

I listened to the full cd's back when I wasn't bored of them.. But I just got tired of their sound.. I ocasionally listen to The Glass Prison, and some of the songs from Images & Words, but the rest is just too bland for me

kurrpt 08-29-2005 08:02 AM

i have all their albums, and i dont think ive listened to all of them actually

i wont lie, i love petrucci, and thats why i like them hehe

I wasn't all that impressed by the Live at Budokan DVD. To be honest, I think Dream Theater are ok. I probably just prefer bands with catchier leads and riffs in the place of technicality. They do have some good songs, but overall I've sorta gone off them. The vocals are hit or miss with me as well.

Moses 08-29-2005 08:07 AM

Also with the mention of Dillinger Escape Plan, the sole purpose of their music is to give a chaotic feeling to the listener.

Also that brings up another band, Meshuggah. Have you ever been listening to them and got like a zoning-out kind of feeling? I read in an interview, that was the sole purpose of their music.

Listen to Symphony X then.

denboy 08-29-2005 08:07 AM

I own a fair amount of DT albums too, and.. There's definately a couple of songs I haven't listened to yet... Hehehe

In my opinion Myung owns Petrucci :p

But, they're both great, and both are so much better then I could ever imagine being.

after hearing the singer talk to the audience, id never buy an album

I do.

They have some fantastic pieces. Though the vocals again are hit or miss with me. Sometimes I just can't stand to listen to them. Also, sometimes I find them to be too technical for the sake of it.
after hearing the singer talk to the audience, id never buy an album
What did he say?
