Deja Vu review complete.

thickasabrick 12-21-2004 04:16 PM

today one of my teachers brought her guitar and a mic and did a little performance for us.

she played a few songs of her own, but she also played 2 beatles songs, blackbird and eleanor rigby. i didn't think anyone could make eleanor rigby half decent on just an acoustic guitar, but she did.

she played Dylan - Knockin on Heavens Door (sang too in tune), a Cat Stevens song (don't know what it's called), Neil Young - Castles Burning (sounded great) and that's about it.

it was annoying because while she was singing her songs, people kept shouting out other songs they wanna hear, which pisses me off cuz people do that when i perform for them as well. can't they just sit there and appreciate good music without trying to ruin it for the performer and everyone else.

other than that it was great.

I always think it's funny when the dumb drunk yells "FREEBIRD!!!".

clown_phobia 12-21-2004 04:21 PM

My love for The Who is increasing fast. They have such good songs!! :)
Pete Townsend has influenced my guitar playing recently.

What bands are you guys liking increasingly much?

BludgeonySteve 12-21-2004 04:22 PM

The Who!

Man they rock.

Distant Echoes 12-21-2004 04:26 PM

clown_phobia 12-21-2004 04:29 PM

You should get My Generation. It was their first album and has some great songs on it. :thumb:

Oh yeah, and probably Tommy too. That has some astounding songs on it.
I always think it's funny when the dumb drunk yells "FREEBIRD!!!".
I was at my friends brothers gig once in a relatively empty bar and some guy (i think one of their not-so-close friends) kept yelling "PLAY FREEBIRD!" and they eventually just said "Ya know what dude!? First of all, were never gonna play freebird. Second of all, Well never consider even listening to freebird, and third of all, We dont even like like freebird, so shut the hell up!"

It was hilorious. I vowed to myself to learn the guitar solo by the end of next year so just incase somebody ever does yell that...me and my band will play and just shut em up.

We got a neighborhood band in our development that play freebird for us everytime they play, but they totally innovate the solo. ITs about 15 minutes of loud guitar soloing, running around in the crowd...buncha drunks.

jpj 12-21-2004 04:33 PM

Well, I've been getting into Pink Floyd a lot more. I've always been a big fan just now more than ever. Also I'm starting to get into a lot of jam bands like, String Chees Incident, moe., Keller Williams, and many more.

Freebird really is a crappy song. When i'm listening to Skynyrd I just skip over it.

well it was one of their more popular ones

Distant Echoes 12-21-2004 04:51 PM

I dont like listening to it because it kills the song and the solo. i personally think its one of the best songs made, but i listen to it the least. Thats like listening to eruption 10 times a day, every day because its the 'greatest guitar solo ever'...but any song can get old, except DSOTM for me.

jpj 12-21-2004 04:52 PM

Yea, I'm not a big fan of Freebird.

Freebird is to Skynyrd as Stairway is to Zeppelin.

I like stairway to heaven :thumb:

Distant Echoes 12-21-2004 04:55 PM

I think every great band has that 1 HUGE song

Zep-Stairway
Skynyrd-Freebird
Aerosmith-Dream On
Jimi Hendrix-Purple Haze
Chili Peppers-Under the bridge
Floyd-Comfotably numb

and so on...i wont continue becaue itll probably cause alot of contraversy, but you get the picture

clown_phobia 12-21-2004 04:57 PM
I think every great band has that 1 HUGE song

Jimi Hendrix-Purple Haze
Both those artists had many good songs.

All 3 of Hendrix's Experience albums were amazing and groundbreaking and still brilliant today. Pink Floyd have released some of the best albums of all time with amazing songs.

Distant Echoes 12-21-2004 04:58 PM

But heres a question on that one great song by bands...

Is it the band that makes the song good enough to define them...

Or does the song good enough to define the band?

What do you think?

All of those artists had lots of huge songs actually.

Jimi Hendrix's biggest song was All Along The Watchtower by the way ;).

clown_phobia 12-21-2004 05:01 PM

Definitive songs

It depends on the band. If it is a great classic band (like most classic rock bands) then it is likely that they make the song good enough to define them.

But, with lesser bands and their 1 hit wonders, then I believe the second statement, that the song defines the band.

BludgeonySteve 12-21-2004 05:04 PM
well it was one of their more popular ones
I knows.

But it really is a crappy song, why people like it I have no clue. Give me "Sweet Home Alabama", "Swamp Music", "Gimme 3 Steps" and "Truck Drivin' Man" over Freebird.

People who request it suck.

Badmoon 12-21-2004 05:05 PM

Okay...

JPJ don't touch any Deep End. I'm not doing North Mississipp Allstars, but will some other time.

I'm doing.......

Widespread Panic - Til the Medicine Takes

What if they just request it to hear it for the first time? I've done that with numerous songs.

BludgeonySteve 12-21-2004 05:07 PM

Then they should go download it. Radio stations and people playing concerts don't need their ****.

What you do is fine though. Just not if it's a band's most popular song such as Freebird.
