The weirdest is how, normally, a metal singer who growls or whatever will have a raspy singing voice. And when metal singers introduce song titles, or talk to their audience, they typically put on a "metal voice", you know, the raspy, tough-sounding voice of strongmen. But Mikael has the smoothest singing voice.. not the barest hint of raspiness in there.
Another great example of an "about face" kind of singer is Ihsahn from Emperor...that guy can belt out an operatic ballad like there's no tomorrow, and the dynamic range he was able to employ with his voice on "The Pain Is Still Mine" off of the Adversary (his solo record) is pretty stunning. |
Ihsahn is great.

...and The Adversary is great.

Another song with an amazing vocal performance from Ihsahn is Elegy for Icarus off IX Equilibrium. I love how he rolls his eyes in the video for Empty. :smoke: |
Hehe.
|
Flying hospital beds ftw. :smash:
Ihsahn AND Akefeldt are 2 people of this generation of music who I could consider luminaries. Both write original, absolutely stunning music. |
Damn right :chug:
...and The Adversary is great.
I havn't heard his solo stuff. But then again, I've only heard one Emperor album, which is really, really good. |
I'd say The Adversary is on par with any Emperor album, other than Anthems, which cannot be topped.
|
I have In the Nightside Eclipse. As I mentioned before, I absolutely love it.
|
Wow. You need to give Anthems a shot then. ITNE is great, but Anthems is a top 5 metal album period.
|
Hmm, I'll check it out then. Is it still Black Metal ?
|
Anthems is a great album. I can barely hear the vocals though - they're so high-pitched.
|
Akerfeldt is definitely one of the two modern luminaries, but Vladimir Cochet makes Ihsahn look like a 12 year old trying to make metal. That man is a genious.
|
I like how you sneak Akerfeldt into the Opeth thread. I come in here sometimes, but theres seldom any discussions id like to indulge in.

Yeah I feel a bit stupid discussing Opeth in the Opeth thread now lololol. |
I do. Seriously.

Shame on you for staying on topic.:p |
Opeth are one of those bands that I feel like the more I learn about them/study, the more unique I find them to be. The "Lepar Affinity" is a wonderful example - I'm not sure I can think of anything remotely like it outside of the Opeth discography...the kinds of emotional devices the band uses, what serve as the hooks, leads, riffs...it blows my mind how someone could write like that. To make dissonance sound so beautiful...
A newbie posted a while back about how he liked Opeth's "orchestrations" or something akin to that. We kinda gave him **** for it, but if you really think about it...there is an almost dark orchestral quality to the compositions, albeit played (for the most part) on standard rock/metal instruments. I could see some of Opeth's material sounding amazing in a symphonic format. |
I find dissonance in general to be beautiful.
|
That segment of dissonance in "The Moor" from 7:22 to 8:28 has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

You must love getting stuck in traffic, then! :p |
Yeah, I do.
I play dissonant stuff all the time when I'm messing around during breaks at band practice, and everyone is always like "ugh that's horrible!" and I just nod my head in disappointment. |
I'm quite sure that if Jesus was alive today, Opeth would be his favorite band.
Unless you're anti-Christian. Then replace Jesus with Satan or some other figure that constitutes very good things. You get the idea. Opeth is incredible. I'm ready for a new album. Screw Gigantour. |
Yeah, they aren't playing anywhere near me so I could care less about that tour.
And even though I don't like Ghost Reveries that much, I'll still get the new special edition for the documentary. I'm such a sucker for anything they put out, even if it's a rerelease of my least favorite Opeth album. |
I bought one of their CDs and had to bring it back the next day to pawn it off cause it was boring. Thank you for ripping me of Opeth.
|
theres really no point posting that here, is there?
|
Yea, go eat your noodles, silly Asian man.
6 hours until Opeth. |

What album was it? |

You have to have an attention span and appreciation of artistry to enjoy Opeth. It takes time to get used to them, but some people just can't handel music with real depth. |
