Just got back from Gigantour in Toronto. OPETH ****IN ROCKED. They sounded amazing compared to the other bands. LoG could of sounded good but their distortion was ****ty, was cranked so high you couldn't tell note from note. LoG and Arch enemy have very good stage presence though I must say.
Mikeal was hilarious. Some quotes of his tonight. "So we got stopped at the border at 6 this morning, they wouldn't let us through. They told us to go wait to the side cause we were so god damn good looking." "So you guys know who we are?" Crowd screams. "Ok on the count of 3 scream our name, 1, 2, 3." Crowd screams Opeth. "Nope, sorry your all wrong, as of 3 seconds ago we changed our names to the C*nts of Sweden." lol After they played Ghost of Perdition, their first song, the crowd was chanting Opeth, Opeth. Was so awesome, so much energy. Setlist was GoP, Leper Affinty, Windowpane (Sounded very good) and Deliverence. Axenrot needs to not hit the snare so hard on the lighter songs, it stood out a bit to much. Other than that it was amazing. People were screaming for them to play more. |
Opeth was pretty good at the Chicago show, although it was the worst of the three times I've seen them.
Mean Gene Hoglan talk
He is pure awesomeness. |
Gene is a great drummer but those vids sucked. Find some vids where he plays with Death.
Explain how those videos "sucked". Like if you guys don't like the SYL music that is fine. That by no means however means Gene "sucks" because he is playing a different style from Death or Dark Angel. |

What was good about that video? The fact that he played the double bass and snare really fast? |
OK fuck you guys I'm not joking ever again.
  :( :) Anyway, I need to watch this Axenrot fellow to know what you're talking about. :-0 Youtube links? |
"When" with Axe on drums

He is a very unique drummer and I like his style. This type of music demands fast drumming and Hoglan delivers. I think you are just trying to nit-pick or is it because you are not impressed with Strapping Young Lad's music? Oh, btw, in the Lamentations DVD Lopez lists a few drummers who he is inspired by, and he mentions Hoglan. I am just saying many people respect him but if you don't then whatever. I am done discussing this.
"When" with Axe on drums http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G2jlXUkJ84 *looks for more*
Yeah that is the only one I have seen so far with him on drums. At one Opeth show I was at he was on drums but I honestly can't remember how well he did. |

Why thank you :thumb:
Axe has been on drums all three times I've seen Opeth, and he's gotten progressively worse. |

I respect him and have enjoyed/have been impressed with some of what he's done, but those videos in particular I think make a case agaisnt him rather than for him. |
:) I just got Orchid in the post :)
Only 4 more Opeth albums to get - Blackwater Park, Morningrise, Ghost Reveries & Damnation (in order of when I want to get them). |
Has no one here heard Dark Angel's Darkness Descends?
I have it, why? Edit; Okay, I'm slow. Hoglan is on drums.
I don't really get all the hype behind Gene Hoglan.

I haven't heard much of his stuff.
?? |
Implying that I have heard some, and from that I don't get the hype.
Idiot. |
I think you are being overly critical. Like I am not a drummer but he keeps the beat good through the songs. Like it just seems to me you are trying to nit-pick each little thing. All I am saying is that I personally feel like he is a great drummer. Numerous bands have said so, including Opeth. Opeth needed someone on very short notice like I said earlier to fill in and they picked Gene because of his skill I am assuming. I haven't even touched on his other projects, like Dark Angel, Death, Testament, his work with Devin Townsend. Btw, way back in the day he played drums during the sound check for Slayer while they were on tour. Gene has my respect.
He IS a great drummer. No doubt about that. He just isn't as good as a lot of people make him out to be IMO. |
On top of it, most of the bands he's been in are the reason WHY they're so good. Without him, SYL and Dark Angel would be significantly worse. Death and Townsend, not so much, but you can't deny he brings that special flair to them.
|
Nice try, Symbolic. My rep didn't go down at all. haha.
|
I'm sorry, but I am not the least bit impressed by that.
That's not Gene at his best. Check out "Symbolic" by Death. If you listen to nothing else, listen to "Crystal Mountain." |
Having listened to Orchid, Ive just found out what Opeth sound like when they can only afford 10 Krona on the production, i.e. the bonus track Into the Frost of Winter. This must be the song that convinced some idiots that Opeth were black metal  (BM is good, Opeth are not BM though). Ill give it another listen. First impressions were fairly good though. Orchid as a whole (on first impression) is great but a bit samey and repetative at times (opening riff of IMSWS goes on forever).

I've heard him on several occaisons that impressed me, but it was more laid back and subtle than what he did there. I'll check out those songs though. |
Well, the whole point of SYL is to be blunt, loud, and obnoxious.
http://sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13343126#post13343126 I found some awesome Cynic videos on youtube. |
2 Days until Opeth.
SYL reminds me of your average teen angst band, just with Devin's unmistakeable flair and the ability to be 5 million times better than everybody else. |

Did you check out Crystal Mountain ? :p We'll most likely be covering that song at the school...talent show or wtvr in April. Will be awsome. Do you like Richard Christy ? (random) |
^^ Good luck finding a drummer who can play those parts.
SYL reminds me of your average teen angst band, just with Devin's unmistakeable flair and the ability to be 5 million times better than everybody else.
Actually, SYL reminds me of a band making fun of your average teen angst band. |
2 Days until Opeth.
Nice. I've booked me a ticket to see Opeth (again) too  I've kinda rediscovered them lately, great stuff. |

He didn't do anything impressive in those vids. None of them showed the main reasons he's a great drummer. I didn't say Gene sucks. In fact if you payed attention, I said hes a great drummer in that post. His good stuff is with Death, not SYL. |
^^ Good luck finding a drummer who can play those parts.
My brother has a friend who can play it...most likely. The guy can do the end parts of Deliverance, so yep. |
Actually, SYL reminds me of a band making fun of your average teen angst band.
Haha, true enough, at least their later stuff. The early albums are definitely pure angst though. Man, the end part in Deliverance is easy compared to pretty much any beat in Symbolic. |
Orchid is growing on me some.
|
Man, the end part in Deliverance is easy compared to pretty much any beat in Symbolic.
Well, the guy plays the whole song aswell. Not just the end part. |
Wow! He's got some real double bass chops then. Good luck with it.
