Embrace- Embrace

Still awesome, I think "Past" is my favorite song right now, but I have to give the album another complete listen. I usually start to tune out after the first few songs of a new album and can't tell if the later tracks are worth listening. But I'm sure they are.

Try some Fugazi!

Daniel! 08-04-2006 11:49 PM

Meat Puppets - Up On the Sun

This is tons better than I remember it. It's like II without all the strange and with better singing.
Try some Fugazi!
Definitely.

Zappa 08-05-2006 12:10 AM

Saw Spit for Athena tonight. They were awesome, even though their bassist was MIA, and now I'm listening to their CD, which I bought after the show.

Not sure how to explain their sound. They're kind of like a poppier Hot Snakes, maybe?

masada 08-05-2006 12:17 AM

Well right now I'm listening to Noisefest '81. Bootlegs are fun.

Mm, or like a hardcore Modest Mouse.

Sonic Youth + keyboardist = fun times with narcoleptic dolphins

Zappa 08-05-2006 01:03 AM

Sonic Youth used piano some. That kind of music only really calls for piano. You try and insert really any synth patch, digital or analog, and it sounds out of place.

masada 08-05-2006 01:34 AM

Originally they had a keyboardist, but she only lasted a couple of shows. There's this strangely catchy descending keyboard thing (which ends in her basically hitting a bunch of keys at once) in one of the Noisefest songs, and it has some nice groove. They were good with the sparse groove action then.

Oh and also, Don Fleming playing keyboard on "Silver Rocket" is funny to hear. The keyboard had that really cheesy fake-piano sound to it.

Zappa 08-05-2006 01:35 AM

Yeah, well I don't know anything older than EVOL or Sister, whichever's older.

br3ad_man 08-05-2006 02:38 AM

I saw this keyboard down at the pawn shop before. It was an old Roland that was just called 'electric piano'. It only had 4 sounds (2 piano, 2 harpsichord) but it looked so so cool. It was all wood and had lots of outputs and such at the back. It was $29. I'm not sure if I should buy it or not.

JonM 08-05-2006 12:18 PM

I'm digging that band Califone again. I haven't listened to them in forever, but they're a perfect late-summer-oppressive-Georgia-heat band.

bmxrunner 08-05-2006 12:21 PM

I just got into Jeff Buckley. It took me a while to warm up to him, but now I really like him.

Sounds pretty limited for $29.

masada 08-05-2006 01:09 PM

Oh yeah he just croaked, didn't he?

I'm working on a top 5 list of avant-garde jazz albums for a local music magazine, so I'm digging those albums.

Robert Crumb 08-05-2006 09:10 PM

Post that list when you're done. I'd be interested.

Coincidently, I bought a used copy of Mingus' Let My Children Hear Music today, and it's pretty great so far. I probably have more Mingus albums than any other Jazz artist, although considering my paltry collection, it's not even really worth mentioning. Also got a remaster of Eastern Sounds that came out earlier this year I guess, $7. Been meaning to try some Lateef.

Also listened to Sebadoh's III and heard some stuff from Matthew Friedberger's album. Latter has some really great songs, some really horrible ones. So it goes.

You should go back and get Bad Moon Rising and Confusion is Sex. Some of the best Sonic Youth ever.

bmxrunner 08-05-2006 09:58 PM

I can't stop listening to Wilco and Metric.

those are both great. i prefer CiS out of the two.

masada 08-05-2006 11:05 PM

Sonic Youth > Bad Moon Rising > Noisefest '81 > Kill Yr. Idols = Confusion is Sex.

Anxious 08-05-2006 11:21 PM

I need to get Noisefest 81...

masada 08-05-2006 11:34 PM

I could probably upload it and send it to you or something. It's pretty cool, and the sound quality wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be.

Anxious 08-05-2006 11:35 PM

Do you have soulseek?

If not I'd love you if you could upload it.
