Opeth are playing in december in europe again... it would be funny if they come back to vienna exactly one year after i've seen them...
|
Axe lacks the subleties...he pounds away on his drums pretty well, but he lacks the light touch.

Right. For me, that makes a bad drummer. No matter how good his chops might be. |
Maybe he should just trigger the living crap out of his drums, and they could find a way to trigger them to sound like they do on Damnation.
|
Maybe he'll torture the drums in order to get a good sound.
Axe: OK Bass drum play lightly or I'll smack you bitch! Bass drum: dum dum dum Axe: And you! Snare! *snare runs* |

I'm pretty sure it will be one year and one day since I've seen them, when they come in November. |

The thing with damnation is the drums are SO dynamic, that even playing with samples taken directly from the track, would hurt it more than help. |
Give Axe a chance though. Remember that Lopez came from a stint in Amon Amarth where he didn't show the amazing soft playing that he displayed in Opeth. It was basically all double kick and stuff. And besides it is always harder to play someone else’s stuff, especially from the diverse background that Lopez had so Axe needs time.
As well, there is a lot of pressure on Axe to perform. Before Opeth, he had never toured much before so this is a new experience for him. In time he will get better at Lopez's drumming style as he finds his place in the band. Axenrot has a classical background but his speciality is in extreme drumming styles. I think in time he will develop his own sound with Opeth. He certainly will not be a Lopez clone but I don't see why anyone would want him to be. Lopez was amazing and no one could replace him (except maybe Gene Hoglan), and I look forward for Axe to bring his own style to Opeth and until a new album comes out I won't be judging him. |
I think they should just put Gene Hoglan in, that sexy beast. :naughty:
|
I don't really get all the hype behind Gene Hoglan.

...And you've heard Symbolic/Individual Thought Patterns? Those are probably two of the best metal drumming records of all time! (the former being one of the best metal albums altogether). I listened to Damnation last night and it made me sad. Not because the music is depressing, but because it was Lopez at his best. :( |
"Metal" being the operative word.
|
Hoglan busts out some incredible patterns though, you can't deny it.
|
Christy > Hoglan
:) |

Well, Gene Hoglan is pretty godly. It's not like he can't play jazz fusion either, I mean, you'd have to in order to pull some of his Death era drumming. |

I haven't heard much of his stuff. |
Then again, I rather Christy on The Sound of Perseverance then Gene on Symbolic. Though both are very good.

I agree. Don't get me wrong, he's a great drummer, but every live bootleg I've heard him play on he plays sloppily. Even when I saw SYL live, I was dissapointed. He just isn't as good as people make him out to be IMO. |

Lies. This is not sloppy, this is godly. The atmoic clock. \m/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLV1riie3a4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tv97pLNczM |
I'm sorry, but I am not the least bit impressed by that.
|
Okay so maybe it's just me..
But what makes Strapping Young Lad so good? |
The short answer is nothing.
I don't like them. I've tried to because I'm in love with Devin Townsend's solo band. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLV1riie3a4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tv97pLNczM
It pains me to say this, because I'm such a huge SYL fan. On In the Rainy Season, listen to the double bass fill at 1:21. Gene messes up a number of times in the second video. Listen to the double bass run right before All Hail the New Flesh starts. Maybe I'm being overly critical, but his sloppiness is distracting. |
Has no one here heard Dark Angel's Darkness Descends?

Well you are entitled to your opinion but I don't agree with that. In regards to Opeth, they called Gene up one day before they needed him on tour. Well he said yes, took a cd and just listened a couple of songs and he filled in for them on a few tour dates because of Lopez's illness. Say what you want about him but many people within the metal community respect him for all the work he has done over the years.
Okay so maybe it's just me.. But what makes Strapping Young Lad so good?
Well that is a very personal question. What makes any band good or bad? I like Strapping because it was the first metal show I had ever seen live and they impressed me. As well, they are Canadian (3/4's actually, Gene is from Texas). I can't really give you an answer as too why I like them. I just simply enjoy listening to their music and have been impressed by all 3 times I have seen them live. Like I am not a drummer but he keeps the beat good through the songs. Like it just seems to me you are trying to nit-pick each little thing. All I am saying is that I personally feel like he is a great drummer. Numerous bands have said so, including Opeth. Opeth needed someone on very short notice like I said earlier to fill in and they picked Gene because of his skill I am assuming. I haven't even touched on his other projects, like Dark Angel, Death, Testament, his work with Devin Townsend. Btw, way back in the day he played drums during the sound check for Slayer while they were on tour. Gene has my respect. |
Gene is a great drummer but those vids sucked. Find some vids where he plays with Death.
|
Those vidoes really did suck.
