I don't know too much about Mule. Their Allgood set was really good. Blind Man in the Dark and Banks of the Deep End are two standards that I'm familiar with. Warren has been doing a lot of covers lately too, I guess he's always done a bunch but this seems like more than usual. I'd just check out some of their recent shows on bt.etree, this looks like a good one:
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=517543
Thanks, I'll check those out. I have their NYE '07 show and there are like 10-11 covers, granted it's nearly a four hour show, but that's still awesome. They were all done really well too, I love their takes on Hendrix and The Beatles. NP: Live/Dead  |
osh!t i hadnt seen this thread before
my favorite group touring right now has to be PHIL & FRIENDS ... its just so much fun bein down front boogyin down....jackie greene is an awesome guitarist too. phil still grooves so much and they can freak it out as good as ever. i wanna see them again this summer real bad. not exactly a jam band but MEDESKI martin scofield and wood can really lay it down too...they can take a single note almost too far. DARK STAR amazed me seein em this year...those dudes are on a serious trip to sound as much like the dead as they do GOVT MULE jam it out RAILROAD EARTH - pretty unreal |

I wrote my take on it a page or two back in this thread. The whole thing was fucking amazing. Based on the bands you listed above, you must've loved Allgood. They all destroyed. I'd actually kind of forgotten about MSMW, but they were dominating me. Great set as the sun was going down. Phil is just incredibly fun to see, and his friends are so good, always. I was tired for Mule but their set was still pretty damn good. Saturday was my favorite day though: Bassnectar, Panic, and Dark Star were all phenomenal shows. |

The Gov't Mule NYE show has so many covers because the theme of the show was Winter Of Love where they covered songs from the Summer Of Love in 1967. Their covers of When The Music's Over and Morning Dew were great but I thought a lot of the other ones were a little lackluster. At least compared to some of the other amazing covers they do. I didn't go to that show, but I was there 2 nights earlier on 12/29 which was a ripping show. Tea Leaf Green opened and their guitarist and keyboardist joined in for an on fire cover of I'm Waiting For My Man and a tribute to The Who with I Can See For Miles (Intro) > My Generation. Check out that show.
Also, the two shows I saw them do at Mountain Jam were on fire. Special guests up on stage all night long and it was just a real great time. Check out the Dear Prudence with Jake Cinninger from Umphrey's McGee sitting in- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWtGd7StEow. I just finished reading Searching For The Sound by Phil Lesh. What an amazing read. Essential reading for Deadheads. |

yeah dude those are just the groups fresh on my mind. all good was probably the best festival i've ever been to. and yeah saturday was badass. we ate some rolls for bassnectar, watched panic jam with derek trucks, and then that was my first time seeing dark star. fuckin UNREAL. so where you from man? |
Annapolis, MD. Yea, Saturday was nuts. At the Telepath show sometime in the afternoon I took one of my crucial doses that I found on Thursday, but then shortly after I ran into some friends of mine with Molly, then this guy comes up and he's like "hold out your hand", and pours like five hits of liquid on it. So I got blasted pretty early that afternoon. We bought some rolls later to ensure that we'd be up and raging for DSO, which was an effective strategy. I was tripping face that whole night though.
|
hell yeah dude.... i got like 4 hrs of sleep from friday to sunday
|
Yeah festivals aren't a very good place to get sleep. I didn't trip at all at Mountain Jam but smoked myself crazy. Ate some mushrooms for DSO too.
|
how was mountain jam man? i havent heard from anybody that went...
|
I must inquire, Wilson - can you still have fun?!
how was mountain jam man? i havent heard from anybody that went...
Mountain Jam was tight. Best 3 day stretch of my life. It started out bad as my friend got caught with a half ounce of weed and security kind of held him up for awhile before sending him all the way home. ****ers. so we ended up missing all the friday bands except mule and the late night. But Gov't Mule made up for the missed sets with a monster show. Some great sit ins from Brendan Bayliss on Sugaree, Grace Potter and her guitarist on Whole Lotta Love, Jake Cinninger on Dear Prudence, and Ivan Neville along with the Galactic saxaphonist on Spanish Moon. The Dear Prudence was probably the highlight of the night. Amazing. It's on youtube, check it out. Don't Step On The Grass, Sam was awesome too, especially fun for us because of what happened with security early in the day. By the way, security was amazingly loose inside the festival, they only cared about people bringing stuff in, not what people did once they got in. After Mule, we went back to the campsite to regroup and then went to galactic. The first song was a sick jam with Ivan Neville (Neville Brothers, keyboard) and Andy Hess (Mule, bass) sitting in. But then the rest of the set sucked. They had a crappy rapper up there ruining everything. We left after 3-4 songs. Should've gone to Lotus who were also playing late night instead. Saturday was a pretty swell day too. Sharon Jones, Jackie Greene and Michael Franti really impressed me during the day. Ray LaMontagne was solid too and I really enjoyed the little I saw of Mofro. Mule tore it up again with another great show and then Dark Star Orchestra played the late night. Their set was shorter than I hoped cause Mule did a really long encore complete with fireworks, but they were great. So Many Roads was perfect. Liberty was great to see too. Sunday the highlight was Levon Helm. What an amazing guy. So much fun to see. MSMW blew my mind too. I've never seen such great jamming. I'll definitely be back at Mountain Jam next year. What a fun time. |
Sounds awesome. Bummer about missing Lotus though, a festival late-night slot is the ideal atmosphere for them.
|
John Butler Trio, Keller Williams, Dispatch
|
Yeah I wasn't familiar with Lotus' stuff then (i'm still not) but they must've been better than Galactic. I'd heard good things about Galactic but they were pretty lousy at Mountain Jam.
I'm so baked right now listening to Bertha from Dick's Picks 18. I never really listen to Dick's Picks but this seems pretty damn good. |
Yea, Lotus is awesome. Although I've gathered from our posting that I probably enjoy their style more than you do. They play sort of that trance/electronica jam, only they have more of an upbeat take on it than say, Particle. And I can't blame you for checking out Galactic, who I've also heard are amazing in concert.
TMNS on DP 18 is dynamite, one of the best versions I've ever heard. I generally like the DPs because the sound quality is really good. Although DP 18 sounds kind of weird, but that's probably got more to do with the sound from the SBDs of this period (early 78) than the mastering for the CDs. Other highlights on that one are the Scarlet>Fire and the Other One, which absolutely smokes. |

Best Music Never Stopped I've ever heard. The interplay between them is incredible. Bobby's rhythm playing is mindblowing on that and Jerry just goes off. And I love the lyrics to that song. Describes the band so perfectly. Anyways, that's definitely the best Music Never Stopped I've ever heard. 10/9/77 is pretty good though. Music Never Stopped inspired me to listen to all of DP's 18 now to see if the whole show is that on fire. It's not, but still a great show. Cold Rain And Snow was really cool just cause how many times do you get to hear that? |
I always loved how with a song like CR&S (pretty much a perfect example), Jerry would consistently play it a few times a year, after of course the early days when it was played much more frequently. It amazes me that they could keep such a good grip on their ridiculously massive repertoire.
|
dude ive got this show from 6 24 70 where they do an insane medley, its like
dark star > attics of my life > dark star > sugar magnolia > dark star > st. stephen > china cat sunflower > i know you rider NUTS |
Yea that show is amazing. It's every bit as good as the setlist makes it seem.
|
Haha man, I know that show well. The Capitol Theatre (where the show is from) is 5 minutes from my house in the next town ever. I still don't understand why they ever played in Portchester, NY but maybe it used to be much cooler than it is now. That show is honestly one of my favorite shows in terms of performance. I think if it was a soundboard recording people would recognize it as the masterpiece that it is. NRPS played a great opening set that night too, make sure you give that one a listen.
I have every show they ever played at the Capitol and they are all gold. Some are really bad sound quality (notably the November 1970 run) but still worth a listen. 2/18/71 is the most essential though. It's really sad to see the Capitol being used for Proms and Sweet Sixteen parties now. What a decline. |
so what is the best soundboard tape (in terms of quality and performance) you all would say you have? (and would you upload it please?)
:smoke: |
That's a really hard question. Cornell pops into my head immediately but I'll have more in a few minutes.
|
I doubt I could pick just one, 90% of what I have is sbds so it's all sounds really good... But in general 72, 74 (WOS), 77, 80, 83 are almost always quality.
|
yeah thats a pretty broad question, so im gonna narrow it down. earlier (pre- wake of the flood maybe?) soundboards. ive not got that much and what i do have is mostly tapers in the crowd and sh!t...if anybody takes the time to post somethin up ill return the favor.
|
joshmay, do you use bitorrent?
