24 days till I get Chaos Ridden Years!
|
Anyone know how many hours a day Alexi would practice in high school, well , he dropped out, so like how many hours a day before they got the record deal? And if so, link to the interview? Thanks a buncH!
|
He used to practise lots, I'm guessing around 10 hours a day, max.
I used to too. |
yes... something like that... 6-10hours daily with his Vai posters in his room... you can find the interview in Guitar World.
|
I'm going to start practising that much again.
|
Damn. Looks like I got up my hours.
Also, repcak, was it the guitar world vid where he showed were not gonna fall? cuz if I recall, he didn't mention any #s, he just said he practiced with a metronome. |
I don't think he said it in that magazine but he's said it somewhere along the line.
|
I'm going to start practising that much again.
wow... i wish it for you. i plan to play 4h daily (at least) it was in the guitar world number together with zakk wylde and steve vai. |
Bump for the Waltari "Move" mp3 & tab of PTTR Demo #2 tab? :) :thumb:
|
i have waltari move on mp3 but its not 100% the same version as on PttR. its more electronic and hip hop (as far as i remember) - the solo's alexi and roope played are not on the song.
Mitch once tabbed out the song, but only the first minute (main melody) and some solos, but not the whole song.... /good night |

You've never heard it before?
It r00lz. |
haha. That song is such crap. I guess it shows how amazing Alexi is! Turning something so ****ty into something so sweeet!
Plus doing justice to the summer theme. ^)^ I have the mp3 of that. Good listening. I might be wrong, but from the tab, it seems Demo #2 is just fast. Except' for the sweeps and shiit later in it. |
It's not really amazing to take a guitar riff and put drums behind it...
Plus, it's Roope's old band so I'm sure he had something to do with it too. |
just cuz you practice 10 hours a day (ok that's a bit high) doesn't mean you'll be like vai or laiho...you gotta practice right.
i was stuck in a hole w/ the violin for years because i never practiced "right." NP: bodom beach terror i think that's my favorite CoB song |
Practicing is practicing though. You'll get better no matter what.
|
not true.
trust me. i think it's safe to say that an instrument is an instrument and for the 12 years i played violin...7 or 8 was a total waste. |
not true.
trust me. i think it's safe to say that an instrument is an instrument and for the 12 years i played violin...7 or 8 was a total waste.
Yeah I agree. You can actually practise getting worse. It's a fact that like only 2 minutes is taken in properly or something like that. And that's concentrating on anything for long periods of time, that's why you should practise different things during a 10 hr guitar practise session. Fortunately, I know how to practise and always stay clean. I timed myself yesterday and I played this lick for 5 minutes straight, 6 notes per beat at 60bpm: E-----------12-------- B-12-13-15----15-13-- That was so boring, and I really suck at it. :( |

I need to post more, cause I'm on here all the time, I just tend to never say anything  |

Don't you have anything better to do? |
I just don't get how someone can play guiltar for 10 hours straight...i'd stab myself with my headstock after 2...
|
I don't have enough patience to practice that long. I haven't truely "practiced" in awhile, but I do frequently play around and try to write songs.
|
I have the patience to practice, because I know I am getting better you know. When I practice, I am always working on techniques on learning new things, instead of just playing riffs that I already know how to play perfectly. I enjoy practicing. The thing is, I can never practice 10 hours because I go to a hard school(in the top 100 high schools of America) and i have a hard class(Calculus AP) that kills my time.
In fact, high school has pretty much killed a lot of my practicing time. Sometimes I wonder like if I am gonna be 40 and I will still be unknown, would I have made it if I went to an easier high school and got to just stay home and practice 24/7 like my guitar heroes did. Anyone else in the same situation? |
I agree & disagree with the "practice making you worse" arguement.
On the one hand: (Myself) I play 2 to 4 hours a day. I don't "practice right" very often. I'll take an hour sometimes(couple times a week) and work on various picking or playing techniques. Just random riffs or make stuff up. I've gotten a ton better at picking inbetween strings(Like Petrucci showed in that video which I forget the name of) It's quite difficult, but I'm decent with it. (pause for lols) I actually practice the intro/a bit into MoP for downpicking since it's damn good practice. Just whatever for alt picking. I play with focus on playing clean. Picking & fingering. A lot of crap, but I never play to a click. I play along with a song until it's "right". Good: Any playing (properly) is better than none I've gotten a lot better just through expierence of playing over time. It obviously takes time to do *insert w/e* at whatever higher level. Bad I've neglected a major flaw in my picking technique for ages now. Starting tomorrow I'm going to correct it. Never "practicing out of this" has really engrained it in my playing. The flaw: Take Bodom Beach Terror chrous for an example. The chords leading up and then the lead. When I'm playing something on the DGC strings and switch to the FAD strings my hand can get caught in no man's land. Flat out missing the strings. It's only with BBT chorus or Mask Of Sanity. (The way I've always played the intro lead(different from Mitch's tab I believe) and that's it. It never happened on the Blood And Thunder leads. Even though it's only with those two CoB parts, it still needs to be fixed. As I start playing tougher material, it'll burn me then. |
I've been messing around with that exact riff to try and come up with something cool.
hehe our band uses a riff like that, it sounds awesome :P but yeah MRDuCran, what do you do to practice then? when you say you stay clean, does that mean tone wise or somethin else that i dont quite understand |
Don't you have anything better to do?
Actually, no.
but yeah MRDuCran, what do you do to practice then? when you say you stay clean, does that mean tone wise or somethin else that i dont quite understand
Clean as in no mistakes/not sloppy. If you think about it, when you're practising, there's no problem staying accurate because YOU control the speed you play at. Start getting sloppy? Turn the metronome down so there's no excuse for when people say ahh I was playing so sloppy, it's their own fault because they weren't listening to their body. |
the fact is, when you make a mistake, its from lack of focus, really. You might 'forget' where your picking hand is, or just not take notice to how the pick is really making contact with the string itself.
As far as practice goes, randomly playing riffs and along to CDs won't help you progress nearly as much as a regimented practice session with goals and a metronome. Organized practice sessions help you make goals and build towards them. There is a plan in mind and you are working towards it. I've been obcessed with proper practice for some time now. The thing is, it's something that is constantly redefined as you progress as a musician and a guitar player. |
Heh my practise "sessions" are so far from organised. I sit down, pick upa piece of paper with some tabs on it and just play it for 10 mins and get bored.
I suck. |
you're better than the majority here, so what would that say for them
I wouldn't say I always organized, in that I may not know what ill be practicing an hour, or 20 minutes from now, but I will always try to have a goal in mind, or what I want to accomplish while I'm practicing |
I try to play as much as I can, but a lot of the time I dont have the energy to. I feel great when I work out a new riff that sounds good - I consider it a good session if I do. Im useless with solos though.
