Well, Gigantour was today. Although the Congress theater (Chicago) is really cool looking, to be honest I wasn't really impressed with the acoustics/sound. The first couple of bands sounded like noise, basically...not really the fault of the bands, although I did notice that when I could hear things clearly, they still didn't sound very good. Into Eternity were pretty good, although they don't seem to have quite found themselves yet...they were kinda missing the sort of charisma one would hope to see in a live band. Overkill were...well...pretty cheesy and kinda annoying. We get it. You're old. Congratulations! :thumb: Music wasn't bad, but singer was a douche.

Arch Enemy was probably the best set of the night, although the sound was still somewhat pooey and it was at times hard to hear Angela. Still a pretty good show, though.

Opeth was good, but subpar by Opeth standards. This was my 3rd time seeing them, and they were not at their best IMO. Mikael's growls were sounding a little thin - kinda like on that one live video someone posted recently from Rock AM. Axe is getting better, especially during the metal parts, but the softer songs are still really suffering. He absolutely butchered Windowpane, and I almost found it difficult to listen to one of my favorite Opeth songs. When Mikael said "we have some songs that are metal, and some songs that are NOT metal," I couldn't help but think to myself: "TELL THAT TO AXENROT!!" It was too slow, and it felt like he was dragging it down, making the song feel depressing and just...not right.

Deliverance was pretty good, but the band kinda fell apart during the outro. You could tell that Axe was way off several times, and the lead line (Mikael, I believe) was out of synch with the rhythm section at one point as well.

Honestly, I think Opeth needs to chill the **** out for a little while and maybe record another album or something. I know that I said earlier in the thread that I'd rather they tour, but...not if it means that their performance is going to suffer for it.
Ah, man. Makes me feel kind of bad for them. I would have been cringing.

Shattered_Future 09-22-2006 10:52 PM

Maybe THAT'S why they played Closure earlier...it's the heaviest song off of the album. Pity they couldn't come through with Windowpane. One of the best songs Opeth has done, period.
That's true. The Rave > Eagle's Ballroom. That's why I'm glad I saw Opeth and Dark Tranquillity on the small stage when they came in March.
That was indeed an amazing show. One of the best metal shows I've ever been to. Almost a religious expirience.

Though this one guy that I knew was there for Devildriver and he said Opeth sounded emo....

WTF

I was pissed that Devin Townsend didn't come.
My favorite Opeth album is Ghost Reveries, but I'm kind of a n00b at Opeth. It seems like a lot of people I've talked to like that album the least.
No, this forum just sucks...

GR is amazing. Of course, BWP Still Life and Deliverance are better as well as a few others but GR is still a great album.

I've been thinking about how it would be covering "The Leper Affinity" for a talent show. If it turned out right it would be sweet.

That thing is way above standard talent show fare.

Way above standard talent show participant skill level too...good luck getting a band together for a talent show that could pull off TLA.

Eliminator 09-22-2006 11:28 PM

I actually know a good metal drummer and guitar player from my school that could play that song.

I wasn't actually saying I was going to do it. I just think about it a lot.

TojesDolan 09-23-2006 03:17 AM

Get a female vocalist that sings very softly...

"We entered winter once again..."

And so on and so forth and you're set.

Shattered_Future 09-23-2006 10:02 AM

An all acoustic version of TLA?

That would actually be pretty cool, to be honest.

Eliminator 09-23-2006 11:08 AM

An acoustic version...

WITH GROWLING.

I like the way you think. :thumb:

TojesDolan 09-23-2006 11:39 AM

No not acoustic.

Metal version, with clean vocals.

Eliminator 09-23-2006 11:42 AM

TLA would suck with just clean vocals.

Shattered_Future 09-23-2006 11:45 AM

Unless it was all acoustic...

Eliminator 09-23-2006 11:48 AM

I think electric would be a lot cooler in a talent show situation. Especially with massive amounts of volume.

TojesDolan 09-23-2006 12:11 PM

But clean female vocals.

Shattered_Future 09-23-2006 01:11 PM

And miked acoustic instruments.

Eliminator 09-23-2006 01:12 PM

Distorted acoustic!

Shattered_Future 09-23-2006 01:51 PM

I think my friend's band did that once. :smash:

TojesDolan 09-23-2006 05:09 PM

I don't have the force to sing and play The Leper Affinity.

It has almost zero strumming so I'd have to sing and play lead and that's like ugh distorted chords and dissonant single note leads. :(

LifeofMusic 09-23-2006 09:40 PM

Going to gigantour in 15 hours, Opeth in about 20. Anybody know what stuff they'll be playing?

And yes it will be awsome and my neck will hurt from headbanging for 8 hours, but its all worth it.

ironmanx 09-24-2006 06:28 AM

Im going to the Toronto show i Take it your going to the Detoit gig. Detroit is closer to me but I live in canada.

Really the Molson Ampitheatre is awful when theres a huge event going on.

repcak 09-24-2006 09:32 AM

in what tuning are most songs of Opeth? e-standard?

Spoonful of Shame 09-24-2006 09:48 AM

yeah, and drop d tuning. On the new album they tune to open Dm tuning DADFAD.

I am learning the Drapery Falls on guitar currently. Great song.

metalhead_matt 09-24-2006 10:43 AM

**** i need to get my opeth tickets for their manchester gig. what songs do they usually play at gigs?

Shattered_Future 09-24-2006 11:12 AM

Full gig? Or Gigantour?

Gigantour setlist is on the other page.

If you're going to a gig, they'll probably play Ghost Of Perdition, Baying Of The Hounds, The Grand Conjuration, Closure, Deliverance, and a few others.

Tyr 09-24-2006 11:15 AM

But don't expect anything from Morningrise or Orchid.

metalhead_matt 09-24-2006 11:30 AM

coz of the length of em? i want em to play to bid you farewell lol

Tyr 09-24-2006 11:38 AM

I think that Mikael has said that he doesn't like those songs anymore.

Otherside 09-24-2006 11:40 AM

they played under a weeping moon when I saw em earlier this year
