What instruments, troll?
Not sure exactly which ones. But I'm pretty sure if I knew what they were, I still wouldn't have KNOWN what they were. Because alot of people say they are very... exotic? They're just weird :thumb: I've heard Lateralus being about the Noahs Ark story. |
I am?
It was you, I'm pretty sure. Well, someone has mentioned how much Christian symbology there is throughout the album. |

Spiritual? Yes Christian? I'm not seeing it. |
Their may be a little bit, The Grudge teaches forgiveness, Parabola about life being a holy experience... and thats all I got...

None of those are singularly "Christian" beliefs. If anything, I feel their philosophies are more Eastern and Occult based. |
I agree with the person that said they are Spiritual.
Alot of religions basically focus on being a "good" person. So it's kinda hard to decide which religion to classify it as. |
Well guys I'm glad to say that this is a great thread for Tool. I normally hang out in the videogames forums, everyone there is an absolute asshole(especially Zakath), it surprises me there is such a kind, understanding thread on MX
|
Christian beliefs have a lot to do with being a good person, and I think Lateralus is all about how to be one. I'm not saying Lateralus is christian, but there could be a connection.

I don't know why that just made me laugh. |
Well I don't want to spam up your thread but Zakath is an absolute douche, I'm pretty sure he has conversations with his mum about the things people say on MX.

Of course Christianity does, but then again, so does Buddhism, Judaism, Tao, Confuscianism, Islam, I Ching, Hinduism, Shinto, Rastafarianism, Atheism, Sikh,.... |
Actually Justin Timberlake is a really good vocalist. He just makes Shit music.
|

The Grudge is probably the last thing I'd relate to Christianity, actually. :p All of the allusions to Roman gods make it sound to me like something a Pagan would write, as that type of religion really carries quite an influence from Greek and Roman mythology. |
Of course Christianity does, but then again, so does Buddhism, Judaism, Tao, Confuscianism, Islam, I Ching, Hinduism, Shinto, Rastafarianism, Atheism, Sikh,....
Yeah I know, I was just saying that because other religions believe in being a good person, doesn't meen Maynard absolutly cannot be referencing Christianity in Lateralus. |

That's what I said... |
Actually Justin Timberlake is a really good vocalist. He just makes Shit music.
Does he even make the music? Or does some industry phool just put the words in his hand? |
That's what I said...
I know, I was referencing a post that was made after your comment. But of course I do agree with you. Also, Tool is a very spiritual, open-minded band, but I thought it was clearly obvious that they're not too thrilled with Christianity. |
He's been known to reference Christianity, probably because they tend to be the first example of organized religion that pops to mind.
Eulogy, for example, is either a clear reference to or blatent mockery of the Christion religion. Or both. |
Who knows if he actually writes his own stuff? He's got alot of potential that won't ever be appreciated by people like us.
Who knows if he actually writes his own stuff? He's got alot of potential that won't ever be appreciated by people like us.
I disagree. If you were to rephrase that and say that he's got a lot of potential but his producers, songwriters, record company, and publicists won't let him do something amazing with his voice (such as, say, Jeff Buckley), then I might agree. I like to think we're a fairly open-minded bunch of people. |
..So there you go... there are some Christianity references, their not always positive, but their there.
|
No I mean the music he puts his voice on is like scratching nails on a chalkboard to us.
|
Yeah, agreed. I honestly don't think he has that good of a voice either. Rather generic.
|
..So there you go... there are some Christianity references, their not always positive, but their there.
Well, since you did mention The Grudge, I will disagree on this. Every reference to Saturn, the one, the ten, etc..are basically telling me that Maynard is a Pagan. I mean, every once of the references has popped up in some Pagan religion over time. Granted, most religious concepts are ripped off of previous religions(Roman, in this case) I'm guessing Maynard doesn't really beleive in Roman mythology. I will say that Schism is clearly about Christianity, although the song shows no objectivity to it whatsoever. |
I simply said that the Grudge has ideas of forgiveness in it, I agree with the Pagan stuff... to an extent.
|
I've always thought of the members of Tool as very free thinking. No beliefs really, and I quote "beliefs are dangerous".
Drawing an influence from a religion to put into music is far from drawing a faith from a religion. I'm sure Tool has used many religions for influences. |
