Isn't that how most songs are written?
They have riffs. They "paste" them together... I'm sure 20 minutes of the same riff would be great.
Many songs, especially Opeth songs, have riffs "pasted" together in a flowing fashion, with some direction, unlike BRI. |
Because it's 20 minutes of purely boring music.
Whaaatttttttt. I wish Opeth would make more songs like BRI! |
I wish they would make more songs with parts as amazing and enchanting as BRI, but I much prefer the more fluid and sensible songwriting style of, say, The Moor.
|
True. I just like the whole idea of "epic Opeth" songs.
|
Most Opeth songs are epic, I find.
|
Most Opeth songs are epic, I find.
I mean like, Uber epic.:p |
Hmmm. MAYH drum beats and Still Life drum beats seem so much... fuller.
Maybe it's the double time cymbal thingies. |
Yeah Lopez pretty much blow their old drummer out of the water.
But the main appeal of the old stuff is in the guitar and, on Morningrise, vocal melodies. |
I wonder how Axenrot will work with the rest of the band.
|
That D# is really quite odd though, you must admit. I actually like it better without the bass note. Then again, Opeth are the masters of making dissonance beautiful. :p
That D# is what makes the progression for me, I can't see how you'd like it better without it Or rather. The D# is what makes it go above being just an awesome progression to being one of the best progressions ever :p |
Well obviously the D# is necessasary towards that particular progression. After all, without it, it's a completely different song.
|
That's simply an Amadd9 with a D# in the bass. A great voicing though.
Does that really count as "simply" ? :D |
ROFL @ Mikeal. this is from a recent tour update he made about Gigantour.
09.19.06 - MIKAEL ÅKERFELDT OF OPETH CHECKS IN FROM GIGANTOUR "We're somewhere in the middle of the Gigantour tour and it's alright! I miss home, my daughter and wife! We aint doing nothing this time around. Not even drinking that much. Thanks to Chris for giving me a copy of 'Guitar Hero' for the PS2. Man, we're hooked (I suck!). Mendez is the king! We play on expert level and everyone that we show it to have been hooked! My goal is to get [MEGADETH's Dave] Mustaine on the bus and have him play 'Symphony of Destruction' [by MEGADETH], which is included. When we go on stage for our show myself and Mendez have those ****ing coloured buttons in our heads for our OWN songs! And you can just forget about listening to music anymore. We go... 'That would be a tough passage on hard level even...' Other than that, nothing's really happening. I've gambled a little bit and guess I'm hooked on that now. The other bands are very nice. We hang with ARCH ENEMY the most. I've bumped into Mustaine a couple of times and he's been very nice to us! I was up on stage for his birthday in Phoenix which was kinda fun. But his birthday is on the same day as my daughter, so my mind was wondering. I wanna go home, people, but the shows will be good, so come see us, will ya??" |
... The mental image of Mustaine playing Symphony Of Destruction on a ps2 made me laugh
|
That is amazing.
|
Wonder why AE and Opeth hang out so much? :smash:
10 days now. |

I was thinking because they're both Swedish, but I like your logic. :naughty: |

Good man. :thumb: :naughty: |
Well, that might be true if she wasn't UGLY UGLY UGLY and her "singing" wasn't a huge turnoff.
:p ;) :) :naughty: |
Actually, I think she is pretty good looking. Not that crazy about her vocals though.
And Kage... why must you always rain on our parade. :upset: |
Eh, I think Scabbia puts her to shame ;). Her vocals are AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL though.
|
I'm ganna agree, Scabbia is better looking. But theres that one picture floating around the web with them both together. :naughty: x2
|
Scabbia >>> Angela
Any day. |
Well, yea, that's no contest, but I'd take Angela Gossow over quite a few girls.
/has Scabbia/Gossow calendar up on wall. |
Uh, sometimes bands don't use riffs at all. And sometimes, bands keep the riffs in key so they flow well together, or at least make the changes moving rather than jarring between keys, or to make the song feel like it's going somewhere, rather than just switching between riffs. Which is what BRI feels like, cool riffs though.
Personally I'd pick a well written song, this includes adding the vocals along with the instruments in seemlessly to produce something greater than the sum of it's parts. Preferably all the instruments doing different and interesting things, this includes the vocals. This to me is great songwriting, especially if the song has tension, and then releases it and the song actually goes somewhere. A collection of riffs is rarely guaranteed to have this effect, and is not necesserally good songwriting, no matter how good the individual parts are.
Put it this way. If I could only listen to one Opeth song for the rest of my life, it would be Black Rose Immortal. |
Of course, because it sounds like 10 songs put together :p
|
Yer, so wtf's wrong with that?
A song is a song... |
It was a joke...
