I'm not self-loathing either. I'm just upset with the direction the country and its culture are taking.
You really give the impression of a europian guy.
I do not want to start a political argument at all (being as i am one of the "assholes" that voted for bush), but ill make a very good analogy to state my opinion on this:

You are a huge baseball fan, your favorite team makes it to the world series, and gets beaten, just barely, like it made it to game 7 and the 15th inning, are you going to hate baseball now because you didnt win, even though there is always next time?

just food for thought.
That is a good analogy, but what if the Player's Union goes on strike again?

NJMetalMeister 07-21-2005 10:16 AM
no I dont go to windowsupdate.com, it slows down my PC and I cant stand it. I dont know whether it's a corrupted file or not the technician will tell. Unlike you I'm a retard when it comes to fixing computers :p
well im happy to spread my knowledge, but seriously updating your windows and defragging once and a while can do compelte wonders to your machine. Even if windowsupdate does slow down your computer, it can save you a lot of hassle later on.

As for me, im off to an irish pub here one last time for dinner (because i go back to the US finally on monday), and then going to watch some soccer match there, even though i have no idea who is playing, but whatever they sell bulmers cider at this pub, and that is good enough for me.

EDIT:
That is a good analogy, but what if the Player's Union goes on strike again?
Well that would be a problem, but luckily i have never known the US government to go on strike :p

really? I'll take it more seriously as soon as my PC is fixed (for the 666th time).

Have fun to that pub

I'd rather live in Europe than America...simply because America's ugly. It's completely built up, and there's almost NO nature here...

Around NYC, anyway...

Steerpike 07-21-2005 10:32 AM
You really give the impression of a europian guy.
I get that a lot. Problem is, American culture has become so powerfully stereotyped, that when someone like me comes along, people have a hard time believing I was born and raised in America.

As I said, the problem is that the stereotypes have become international. More so than any other country, America is the most stereotyped. I remember a while ago in a political debate about foreign policy, one guy commented, "We don't need the French to paint us as a bunch of cowboys."

To which I replied, "You're right. We've already done a fine enough job of that ourselves."

Shattered_Future 07-21-2005 10:34 AM

Lots of people think America is a country full of fat, greedy bastards.

Sad thing is, lots of us are...

2/3rds of the country is over-weight, our media negatively reinforces an ideal of "get rich or die trying," and partisan politics is becoming our most distinguishing characteristic more and more with each year.

It's actually quite beautiful and serene where I live. It is slowly becoming more industrialized though.

I know what you mean...I think that people are becoming more hostile and wasteful.

That's just my two cents.

Actually, here in Canada, the stereotype is that American's are complete idiots who:
a)know nothing about anything except America
b)brag about how powerful America is
c)know absoluty nothing about Canada, and make stupid stereotypes about us constantly
d)all of the above

Shattered_Future 07-21-2005 11:12 AM

^ Thats a good half (possibly more) of the nation right there.

RiceMonster 07-21-2005 11:14 AM

Sad to hear, because after meeting a lot of the Americans on here, I thought this was not the case.

Well, I'd say a lot of Americans suck at geography, I always have to explain where exactly I'm from. No, Belgium is not in France.

Doesn't seem hypocritical at all.

Like I said, stereotypes gotta come from somewhere.

I am American and I can tell you firsthand that the rabid nationalism that's been setting since the September 11 attacks has been slowly turning this country into a racist, separatist society to rival 18th century Japan.

The sad thing is: I agree with you. But I feel that it needs to come from the United States. Most people over-seas are ignorant to the USA, just as most in the USA are ignorant to other countries.

But yes, the nationalism is sickening. It saved Bush's *** and gave him the support to start an unjustified war.
"Let's fool the whole country into believing that Al Qaeda hails from Iraq".

Shattered_Future 07-21-2005 11:50 AM

I don't understand why we went after Saddam if Osama did all of the attacks...wouldn't it seem more logical to go after him?

That's another thing this country lacks...independent thinking.

Yea, but then we just kinda gave up, and went after somebody easier instead...

I dunno, I'd say leave Korea be. I don't think it's a good idea to attack someone with nuclear missles because it just gives them a reason to use them.

superpeer 07-21-2005 11:58 AM

Attacking a country because they have weapons is pretty retarded. It would be much easier attacking a country because they have no weapons. Now THAT is logic, mister president.

Steerpike 07-21-2005 11:58 AM
The sad thing is: I agree with you. But I feel that it needs to come from the United States. Most people over-seas are ignorant to the USA, just as most in the USA are ignorant to other countries.
True. Our problem is pandering politicians and a greedy media negatively reinforcing counterproductive attitudes and ideals.

America has its good groups and people. We're the hub of most counterculture in the last century, and we've made great cultural and technological contributions such as television, jazz music, air travel, and so on.

But we also have a side which I feel that I as an American should be apologizing to the rest of the world for. The Bible Belt, redneck regressive ideology, modern-day robber barons... the list goes on.
But yes, the nationalism is sickening. It saved Bush's *** and gave him the support to start an unjustified war.
"Let's fool the whole country into believing that Al Qaeda hails from Iraq".
No argument here. I didn't want this war any more than the rest of the world. It was made under false-pretenses and was purely to promote the agenda of the administration and the wealthy elite who stood to profit from it.
well, didn't they try to get Osama, but they couldn't find him?
Pretty much.

My personal belief is that the administration wants to turn Osama into a bogeyman the likes of which hasn't been since Spartacus. So in reality, they're using just enough effort to catch him that he can still easily get away, but the rest of the world thinks we're trying.
I dunno, I'd say leave Korea be. I don't think it's a good idea to attack someone with nuclear missles because it just gives them a reason to use them.
That's exactly why we won't attack North Korea. Because unlike Afghanistan and Iraq, North Korea can actually hit us back.

The president is not the war hero he wants us to think he is. He's just an overblown schoolyard bully.
