Well, I was sent Lateralus yesterday. I wasn't sure what to except, but I know I was disappointed. The best part of the music was the drummer. Any suggestions to tell me why it's so hyped about?
Yes...Danny Carey is VERY good...and what do you mean by hyped out...? If you mean wierd its the most prog rock album out of the four tool albums IMO.

jpj 02-11-2005 08:49 PM

I think by hyped he means how everyone is always raving about how awesome it is.

Woodstock 02-11-2005 08:49 PM
That was my assessment of it too :)
I'm still glad you sent it to me. Opened up my ears a little.

Broken Arrow 02-11-2005 08:49 PM

Remember the Titans is a great movie.

It's the only Tool album I've heard. I see nothing wrong with prog, but the atmosphere of the album seemed bland.

clayman112388 02-11-2005 08:52 PM
Oh trust me ive looked into all of his previous work and seen him live with metallica..but im curious how hell write in the metallica studios.
Yeah, I know what you meen.... I'm curious to know, why did he leave Suicidal?

I love prog: Yes, Rush, Mars Volta, Pink Floyd...
I still wasn't much impressed by the "second best R&M album ever"

I like all of the bands stated there, as well as Tool and Opeth, that's about all the prog for me though.

munky_magik 02-11-2005 08:56 PM

I think with Tool you either get them, or you don't.
If you do they're an amazing band. If you don't then they're simply mediocre and you're left wondering what all the hype was about.

But Pink Floyd won.

I haven't heard Tool except one song.

I think either way, their musicianship is commndable, I didn't like them at first either, but three of my best friend would not let me go until I was into Tool, and now I've grown accustomed to them, I dunno, they just seem so original.

And to think, it almost beat DSOTM.

That might be true...it seems plausible in fact, but the fact is if it is a band like that, I can't help but say they are over-hyped then, because the best music is accessable to everyone.

See, I disagree. Drums were the only instrument they have that has ever impressed me. The others are competent, but nothing above average.

There's about a 5 person Neil Young fan base on this site. I'm one :D

Well I really like Lateralus, and I'm not much impressed by the first best R&M album ever :)

I know it sounds lame, but I think with some bands it really is just opinion.

What's commendable with the guitar is the atmosphere, it's got an original tone.

Plus Maynard's vocals + his lyrics = hell yes

Meh, I don't think I have ever met someone who doesn't like DSotM to be honest, but I can understand not everyone will like it, I just wasn't as impressed with the musicianship all the fans rave about. I think it is a bit harder to deny the musicianship of Pink Floyd, but I'm rather biased :)

Opinions are lame, autonomy is for the weak, homogeneity is trendy ;)

Maynard is mentally insane...in a good way..look at live performances to understand what i just said.

To other post: Chancellor?

To THis post: Most every band I listen to for musicianship has a unique guitar tone. Every guitarist develops their own sound, so I can't say an original sound=greatness.

I was never impressed by his lyrics and I spent a good 5 months in S&L seeing them mentioned time and time again, I never read any I was that impressed with, and his vocals were meh to me. Not very original imo.

Adam's tones are bettered by so many people.
As for creating atmosphere so many bands, IMO at least, beat Tool.

I just think he's a freaking genious, and that he has a weird mind, so he may seem a bit.... uhhh.... odd? But he definately is an intellegent individual, if you understand the meaning behind his lyrics, wow.

Woodstock 02-11-2005 09:10 PM

I think it's missing the emotion that DSOTM is rich with.

I never got the amazing musicianship thing that most Tool fans rave about either; Lateralus was never about the musicianship for me.

I seem to be the opposite of you; I recognise that DSoTM is good, but it never held my attention or really interested me - yet. You're the same but with Lateralus.

Justin Chancellor, bassist.

Yeah, well that is really the biggest problem I have with Tool fans, is they rave about a musicianship I don't see. If they said they enjoyed listening to it, great, happy for em, but when they say Maynard writes the best lyrics and is a god at vocals...meh.

To a degree I guess, I still don't even see Lateralus as that good as a whole though, too much filler type stuff imo.

clayman112388 02-11-2005 09:14 PM

I don't really think him, or Adam, are that amazing, they just play stuff that sounds really appealing. (I should have said their style over their musicianship, my bust)

NP: Tool - Stinkfist

oh noes! my fanboyism is showing :upset:

Broken Arrow 02-11-2005 09:15 PM

So is Tool metal?
