A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-28-2006 08:13 PM

I'm writing my first short story for it.
I'm writing my first short story for it.
Post it in the Short story thread in the pit.

You know you want it... c'mon...

DeadReligion 02-28-2006 08:29 PM

I'd submit, but no story of mine is under 10 pages.

drumass04 03-01-2006 11:15 AM

I write semi-fiction a lot. But just like DeadReligion said, it's never less than about 20 pages. It seems like a lot, but when you've spent so much time on it, and you really have the feeling for it it kinda flies by.

I also use a lot of description in my writing, I'm a little like Steinbeck in 'Of mice and men' at the start of each chapter he'd have a page or two of description. That's because it was originally written to be performed on stage though, the description at the beginning of each chapter is like the introduction and setting at the beginning of each scene or act in a play.

Would certainly be good fun to read some other peoples work though. As you've said, just leaving comments and stuff instead of full crits.

Post it in little sections then. :)

Personally, I like flash because I don't have a whole lot of time (or an attention span) to read internet stories. Which is wierd because I don't have that problem with books at all.

DeadReligion 03-01-2006 09:15 PM

'Of mice and men' < Heh, I'm reading that for the second time in English. Great book.

slack 03-01-2006 09:22 PM

Heh, books used to put me to sleep instantly.

drumass04 03-02-2006 12:56 PM

I've always been an avid reader. I've been reading an awful lot since I was about 9, I used to sit in an armchair by the fire with the cat on top of me and read for hours. Quite a story book moment!!

When I write fiction/semi-fiction I can never keep it down to a decent length I have to get my ideas down in the ebst way possible, and most of the time that involves description (I'm quite a sucker for beautiful descriptions). Unfortunately in writing my description tends to be fairly long winded. Though in person I can describe something in very few words. It's quite strange and annoying on occasions.

TojesDolan 03-02-2006 03:53 PM

I usually like reading, but I don't like when I'm too hooked up.... which happens very often, and I keep reading and reading until I finish a good chapter or two... Other thimes I'm lazy and stop in the middle of something.

I should get back to reading more. I need to clear my mind and start doing mentally productive things.

FA 03-02-2006 09:44 PM

the flash-fiction thread is dying, post some work, guys

ATC 03-02-2006 10:51 PM

It's not dying no more.

FA 03-02-2006 10:56 PM
It's not dying no more.
Proper, come on everyone, keep the postings a-comin.

sub-topic: threads are lacking critiquing and it's irritating, everyone posts and their return ratio is very poor. I've critiqued like 4:1 critiques : posts, ahhh annoying.

metaliq 03-03-2006 01:22 AM

I have to wake up 5 hours for school.

This is becoming a habit of mine. I think it would be cool if I could be diagnosed as an insomniac. I want a desiese sooo bad.

And the crit to post ratio does suck... I am close to 1:1... except for those threads I dont really critique, I just tell them it's bad and why. That kind of is... but yeah.

ATC 03-03-2006 01:48 AM

Heh the crit to post ratio does suck. I don't critique unless I think the piece has potential which eliminates a lot of work. I've begun critiquing less because most of my crits end up with people black-dotting them never to return after I give them decent detailed crits. Also, I hate crits that have a numerical score to them, seeing as how they're devalued by giving 9.5/10 to pieces that are far from perfect. But I like this little corner of MX so I'll keep on keeping on.

drumass04 03-03-2006 11:01 AM

There are people that always return crits, and they're good crits. But there are others that you give a real good crit to, and then they don't return to yours, usually they don't ven leave a comment.

There are people that are very good about returning crits, though. Props to you guys who do!

I crit many more than I post myself, but then again I don't post new material all that often.

Timmy P

metaliq 03-03-2006 12:55 PM

I return crits.

Sometimes it may actually be weeks later... because either I forgot and then remember or I am away for a while.

But I crit you back. :)

drumass04 03-03-2006 01:59 PM

Ditto, I actually enjoy critiquing others work, I find it helps to improve my writing as well as helping others.

Timmy P

TojesDolan 03-03-2006 03:53 PM

I return crits... but sometimes I'm too lazy and procrastinate like there was no tomorrow... :(
Sorry if I owe anyone.

I'll go do some now. I hope.

slack 03-03-2006 06:29 PM

Ahh, my computer died.

But, I try to return the critiques I get, and sometimes I whore myself out to get others to read my stuff. I have no business writing, but feel compelled to do it anyway.

And someone should sticky the flash thread already. :)

TojesDolan 03-03-2006 07:36 PM

We should get writer's profiles down and your thread up, to avoid convolluting up there.

And yes, you have to wait until josh/Dfelon/Burt sees this. Or ask in the Site forum for stickiness.

Sade 03-03-2006 10:37 PM

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I've been gone for a while. No time to write or do crits.

I'm working on a piece now...I'm trying to convey the death of information. It's not working.

FA 03-04-2006 04:21 PM

I hereby ban everyone who doesn't critique but posts their own work.

*cough*.

I can't ban, but I hereby wish to ban them, by refusing to critique.

*cough*.

Nothing's working, back to critiquing.

i r confused, but a new policy should be enforced.

toe-jizz, if you critique all my work I'll critique all yours, same goes for everyone else, if someone critiques mine and they post a link or some sort of acknowledgement that they want me to crit theirs, I will.

Sure darling, I'll try and crit all your stuff. And everyone who is mildly amusing or interesting. That's been my policy for quiet a while now, actually.
ur ava turns me on
you're strange.

TojesDolan 03-06-2006 10:20 PM

I'm looking forward revising your texts and poems. They seem interesting.
you called me darling.
I call males darlings...?

Wow I'm a confused young lad.

pixiesfanyo 03-06-2006 10:27 PM

The guy on the oscars was calling males darling.

It made me uncomfortable.

Because I'm a HOMOPHOBE.

FA 03-06-2006 10:31 PM

I'm not so much a homophobe, it's just not normal to hear that from another man.

TojesDolan 03-06-2006 11:04 PM

That reminds me of that South Park episode...

*not the real text but similar*

Stan: Don't bug me, don't be a dizzy bunny!
*dad stops car*
Stan's dad: What did you call him?!!
Stan: Dizzy bunny, because Big gay Al told us...
Stan's dad: No son of mine is calling anyone dizzy bunny! You call him asshole like a kid your age!
Stan: but dad..!
Stan's dad: Do it!
Stan: asshole
Cartman: Don't call me asshole, motherfucker.

...
yeah something like that.

I'll stop now. Thanks.

As a side comment, I hadn't realized I'm the #1 poster of this thread. I disgust myself now. :upset: I have nothing to live for now.

FA 03-06-2006 11:36 PM

well...the dialogue was hilarious.
