I always do me homework
Aes, that video is awesome! such a great take on that song. |
I'm awful at studying and homework. I'm in class right now, even.
Hello Jam Session posters! |
hello.
I'vre never seen you around ebfore. Tell us about yourself. |
Hey moaner, are you still doing your A-levels? If so, could you tell me what subjects you are taking and that you took at AS?
If you've finished them, could you tell me what result you got and what you're doing now? I'd appreciate it if you could, it'd help me decide my subjects for next year. Thanks man.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2246852135843298436
Amazing. Are you transcribing it or do you have the music? What's that chord he plays at 1:12? Its on teh second syllable of Who-oa! Living on a prayer |

I'm getting some module results on friday, i'll be sure to share. I took 5 (no frees for me); Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, AMths, further maths. I can't wait to be shot of chemistry at the end of this year, it's not my kinda subject at all. fun at GCSE but no fun at A level. |

I take Maths, Physics, Chemistry, computing and French. I wanted to take Futher Maths but I couldn't get in the class, so now I have to drop two subjects next year to take up further maths AS so I have a hope in hells chance of being accepted by Cambridge. |

But he still amazes me with his playing. I was reallly just learning it off sight and off what I hear. I play the chord that I think the chord you're talking about just as a Cmaj Barre |
Man I'm so emo.
|
I'm good thanks :). You sound like you're going alright there
Owch about the overwrite. Speaking of overwriting, let me tell you about what happened in Tutorial last week... Our school uses up one of our study periods with a year 11 assembly each week where they present a range of information, workshops, etc. So this particular week we had nothing else so the teachers put on a rather lame video on risk-taking. /shnores. It went on for about 40 minutes and then at the end, the guy was summing up "So go on... Take a risk.... Go apply for a job, try a new sport, ask someone out on a date -" "- knit socks for soldiers" Someone had taped over the end with a war time documentry, and there was practically no delay between the words of the speakers on the two different shows. T'was classic. Good ol' Tommy - he's a great guy. Sweet rendition there - should be fun to play :). Lol why are you emo, Gav? My mate Derek had a plastic, unserrated knife (one of those ones from McDonald's) at school and was jokingly pretending to cut his wrist with it because someone laughed at him over something trivial. It actually ended up giving him a scratch... somehow... Then Em screamed so we got kicked out of the hallway. Beauty. |

In other news me and a couple of physics buddies "won" a competition today (2 teams got through out of 5 and we were one) the competition was about explainin science to a non-scientist, we did E=mc^2 It was good fun, we have to do it again for a regional final on 21st |

lol.
So what do you two want to do for a career then, if you've looked that far ahead? |
Maths, hopefuly, or maths with physics.
Is that called Paperclip Physics?
It was indeed named thus. |
lol.
So what do you two want to do for a career then, if you've looked that far ahead?
In the careers library they have booklets called "Careers in _____", so I looked in the maths ones for some stuff. One interesting one was a computer data engineer (or something), which basically entails working on writing and developing encryption programs. I also thought I might like to be an enginner (I did my work experience at a civil engineering company). What are you going to do? |
A A A A A in my first set of modules, with 90/90 (standardised) in physics

Aw, you legend :thumb:
Sounds good Simon. I'm after a career in music in some form or another (tuition/teaching/performing artist?), and I'm also looking at IT (web design/development mainly). Keeping my options open for as long as I can though. *shrug* |

Trea ~ That sounds great. It's doing what you want to do and getting paid for it, which could never be bad. |
Ooo, let us know how you went.
I had a physics assessment task (SAC) today. I think it went pretty sweet :). |

/Is taking the recording gear out tommorrow.
So expect a post later on tonight detailing one of the following, A) What exploded/What I forgot to buy B) How easy it was to lure 4 friends to an industrial estate and mug them under the premise of a recording session. |
haha
i found the most hilarious example of shameless memeism used for self promotion on myspace today Band called the sun, video called "romantic death" hilarious |
haha nice.
I've got a recording of Flight of the Bumblebee... on trombone! Do you know how hard that is? Wow. Just wow. |
haha nice.

Again with ol' Rubber Johnny :thumb:
How's it going Chris? I think I'm all music'd out for today - been going from 9 this morning. |
You rehearsing for the games, right?
I've been roped into desiging a front cover for a book, so I'm busy with that at the moment. |
Yeah, but not only.
Alright. Who/What's that for? I'm just checking out that youthweek site - nice. Might consider getting involved in some of it (maybe RockIT...). Cya, I'ma gonna make myself a pizza - pita bread for the base . |
Yo kids,
How's everything going? Got back from the studio today, went pretty good. I can do ALOT better, but considering the circumstances, I got some pretty amazing recordings from it. Basicly we used all the practice rooms gear apart from cymbals, and guitars. The kit wasn't given any tuning, dampening (apart from the kick with an old blanket). I just had to stick the mics on and make sure they weren't clipping, I had no oppertunity to move them around or otherwise alter things apart from post-recording processing. Mic in the kick drum, about 3inches from the head (the other head was removed) It was an equal distance from where the beater hit and the shell. E.Q. for the kick, slight boost at 80Hz, cut at 300Hz, wide boost at 2kHz-5kHz. Snare was miked initially with the mic pointed towards the center of the head with a slight angle to get more tone. But during the recording it turned out it wasn't tight enough and fell into new posistions. Toms where miked in the same manner as the snare. Two overheads placed badly that have little effect on the mix, I was really rushed and didn't have time to check everything so I took the guitarists word that the overheads were 'far too loud, turn em down'. Basicly they are extremely quiet. I didn't have time to run the guitars through guitar rig and isolate things so guitars were just miked. Marshal combos, don't know much else, fairly new though. Stuck an I5 for the rythmn guitarist, on-axis but slightly angle so it wasn't directly at the centre of the cone, but not so angle it was off axis. Sounded great, not much E.Q. needed, just roll off below 80Hz, a little boost around 2kHz. I loved the sound this gave combined with the amp, really phat and chunky, it gave us some really sexy pinch harmonics. The lead guitar got a 57. Still came out well, (It was on the same model of amp, both pretty new) you could tell the major difference between the 57 and i5 though. The I5 just had alot more beef to it and I generally prefered it, but the 57 needed a little less E.Q. The 57 was miked up on the amp pretty much the same as the I5. The bass was DI'd and then run through guitar rig two and modelled. Basicly the session was really rushed, I had to reset the desk a couple of times halfway through setting up so we ended up slapping 5 tracks down in 1 hour and a half. There really wasn't time to tweak things so it's really just a raw recording. The mics I used, Snare = Audix i5 Toms = Red5Audio snare/tom mic (Can't remember the model) Kick = RVD1 Overheads = RV8's (Red5Audio again) Lead Guitar = SM57 R Guitar = Audix i5 Bass = DI'd Just got it all done live. http://s57.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0I9SVFQ4Z88OV2RS4GJ6N18OXU That's the current mix, I have no idea how that sounds/sounds on normal speakers, my ears are dead at the moment. But to me it sounds great considering the rushness and the fact that there was no tweaking. The Red5Audio mics really impressed me, I was expecting to have to do alot of tweaking in terms of posistions to get a usuable sound. I didn't expect to put the mic down where I thought it'd be best and get a good tone. Let me know what you think, I'm thinking the drums wanna drop down in the recording, tis a bit overpowering. |
Dude, KKKKKocaine, I haven't seen you in forever. When did you get back to MXing?

That recording sounds a bit weak and flat KKK. Plus I can't really tell whats going on, think that just might be the performance/genre though. Probably can all be fixed with EQ and mixing though.

Haven't really heard it through regular speakers yet, only enclosed, recorded some vocals today with one of the most annoying vocalists ever. Aside from being an absaloute twat to everyone around him he just annoys me, he complains that he sounds 'awful' as a vocalist, but refuses to take lessons, he can do low screams/growls ok, but the second he has to hit a high note he seems to double in volume and didn't seem able to follow my request of 'Could you do the high bits quieter?' I know it's screaming, but his volume takes the piss, then to further add to my frustation, he can't stay in one spot, he has to lean in when he screams. He didn't prepare any lyrics for songs the band have been doing for a few months and then complained at the rest of the band because we weren't helping him write lyrics, when earlier he had a go at the bassist and guitarist because they said they'd like to do some backing vocals, 'you had your turn to record your stuff, let me do my own stuff' He's just generally a pain, both musically and personally. Gonna try and finish off the recordings and see how they come out on normal speakers. |

Ask him to lean away from the mic more when he goes higher. Failing that, just add a bit of compression, maybe 4:1 post-recording, should even things out a bit. Also, i'd consider a bit of compression on the drums (the drum submix), just to get them to gel together a bit better. Can't tell whats happening on the bass end, as I listened on ipod headphones last night. I'll edit this post later when I give it a proper listen:thumb: Pretty good for the time constraints though:D |
Hello, my name is Freddie. I'm 16 (17 next month) and I play drums and sax. I'm just starting to get into recording and I'm trying to figure all of this equipment out. My dad left me some recording stuff that he used for his band and his CD. Today was a nice suprise, I found two Shure SM57s in this drawer. I'm currently using a Roland VS-1680 for recording and I'm using Cakewalk on my computer. |

I've just run it through my TFT's inbuilt 'speakers'. And I think I've under-represented the bass of the overall mix so I'll run over that and boost it up a bit, I've mostly been monitoring on enclosed headphones and my studio monitors which churned out plenty of bass, but I'm hoping to optimise the mix for domestic speakers tonight or tommorrow. I keep on forgetting to add a bit of compression to the entire mix as well. |
G'day Freddie, how's it going?
Woah, I am sooo tired. Just did the Moomba march then stuffed around in the city with some mates. Great fun :). |
I was up all night last night haha.
|
What doing?
I spent ages cleaning my trombone last night but I wasn't too late to bed. Highly entertaining if you ever get the chance to watch, lol. Oh and I've half got msn back. I'm gradually being allowed to permanantly unblock various people... |
Awesome. Can't wait to talk to you .
I was up last night with Chris and Chad (/you guys *sigh*) doing the usual. Went driving, walking, played pool, swam ( ), played PS2, etc etc. Good times! I've started a new plan at gym for the holidays. |
