Specify. I could recommend thousands.
Hm, well just good guitar and singing...

bands like allister, the starting line, brand new, bowling for soup...

Dancin' Man 05-14-2005 09:37 PM

Good guitars and singing...
There are the obvious prog metal/rock bands like Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Dead Soul Tribe, Tool and Ayreon. Tool and Dead Soul Tribe are a little less amazing guitarwise, but those vocals are nicer. Well, Ayreon uses many vocalists, one being from Dream Theater and another from Dead Soul Tribe.

Then if that's not your style, you might want to try out nu-metal. In specific, System of a Down and The Deftones, though I like Chevelle quite a bit as well.

If you're a little more open minded, Arcturus, Ulver (early), Opeth, Agalloch, Solefald, Emperor (late), Age of Silence and Winds are all amazing.

Dredg, Soli i Sombra, The Mars Volta and Porcupine Tree are some of my favorite prog rock bands. This is probably the best category for someone not broken in to metal yet.

Try getting hold of the "Drums From Hell" program. Or try downloading something like Cubase SX which has in-built MIDI drums.

pimporama 05-15-2005 10:11 AM

thanks, but preferably free?

P2P programs are your friend.

Ive recently started listening to Iced Earth, I already picked up Horror Show. Can someone recommend me some other albums, that are good by them?

munky_magik 05-15-2005 12:01 PM

Try Night of the Stormrider or Burnt Offerings.

Iai 05-15-2005 12:40 PM

Genreally, Something Wicked This Way Comes is considered IE's best album. But, for the most part, I don't really see a massive gulf in quality between any of their releases, except the first two, and the most recent one, all of which are a big step down in quality. You definitely want an album with Barlow on, I can tell you that much.

You could always get The Blessed And The ****ed, which is a pretty good 'greatest hits'. It's a double disc, too, so more value for money.

Thanks

Hey guys. I just download four songs by Sonata Artica:
Replica
Black Sheep
Kingdom for a Heart
and Tallulah

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend me some other good songs by them, and also any bands like them or in the same genre.

Dancin' Man 05-15-2005 03:46 PM

Dragonforce, Rhapsody and Symphony X are the closest bands as far as I know.

Deth 05-15-2005 03:48 PM

A few good songs by Sonata Artica are Abandoned, Pleased, Brainwashed, Exploited*, The Cage, and Victorias Secret.

*One song

Letter to Dana is a song similar to replica, only better (in my opinion). Kingdom for a Heart brings to mind Wolf & Raven (which is probably their best song, in my opinion). Other than that, try;

Blank File
My Land
8th Commandment
ToT is as good a place to start with DT as any of their other albums.
What are some good old Cd's?

3rdplanet 05-15-2005 05:00 PM

*freaky quick reply*

I love Awake myself, but a lot of others will tell you that 'Images & Words' is their best 'early' CD.

The best advice is to watch out for Falling into Infinity, I quite like it myself (because I'm a fanb0i) but many many people don't like that CD.

Deth 05-16-2005 07:44 PM

Here's my prediciment. I am new to Black Metal (meaning I have heard very little) but am open to almost anything. So I was searching around and on centurymedia.com, I saw these Emperor albums for only $5 each.

Wrath Of The Tyrant
In The Nightside Eclipse
Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
IX Equilibrium

Which should I get?

Dancin' Man 05-16-2005 07:57 PM

Oh gee.... Well, Anthems To The Welkin at Dusk and IX Equilibrium are my favorite from that list but In The Nightside Eclips and Anthems to the Welkin At Dusk are considered Emperor's finest two albums by most. For $15 I'd buy those 3. Wrath of the Tyrant just isn't as good. If you really only want one, get Anthems.

Deth 05-16-2005 08:00 PM

Cheers. I'll see if I like Anthems and then move from there.

BoboTheRagingHobo 05-16-2005 08:01 PM
A Change of Seasons. It's the EP CD, it's absolutely great. It has that one track with 3 Led Zeppelin covers combined into one track. It's sexy.
Actually, it's five tracks.

1. A Change Of Seasons
2. Funeral for a Friend - Love Lies Bleeding (Elton John live covers)
3. Perfect Strangers (Deep Purple live cover)
4. The Rover - Achilles Last Stand - The Song Remains the Same (Led Zeppelin live covers)
5. The Big Medley (Pink Floyd - In The Flesh, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, Kansas - Carry On My Wayward Son, and some other blues track that I can't remember the name too)

Wrath of the Tyrant just doesn't feel the way Emperor should.
Bobo: The Led Zeppelin covers are all one track. That's what I was getting at, heh. Props for clarification, though.
Ah, from the way you put it or the way I read it, it seemed like you said the ep only had two tracks heh.

Nightside first and foremost, followed by Anthems. After that, it's a toss up as to which you would rather have next.
