maudlin Of The Well - The Ocean, The Kingdom, And The Temptation
Heard a few songs by this band and Kayo Dot before, I know they're pretty interesting, though sometimes a bit extreme for my liking. Hey kids, let us go on a journey to find out what this song does to our heads. It opens with some oriental sounding clean guitar with a few tons of echo added, but it goes away quickly. Replaced with some bass, soft drums, soft guitar, and someone talking, no idea what he is saying, it's muffled. The chord progressions are definitely strange. It's sort of fast, yet soft, but extremely tense, it feels like it could get really heavy, really quickly. A slight speed up for the "chorus" at 1:50. After that is the main idea is back, but guitar is improvising, it has a watery feeling about it. Another speed up at 2:30, then a calmer bit, but only for a second. There it is, a chungy distorded bass and guitar riff, some distant reverbed growls, the drums are constant, a bit louder than the rest of it though, which seems strange. At 3:50, the reverb is removed from the growls and they are now more audible. It seems rather strange, quite hard to listen to. It flows back to the first main idea for a bit, heavies up with some screamy vocals. A small solo, then it backs well off. At 5:30 there is a new section, clean guitar picking with some high notes dropping off all the time. The constant drum beat is still there, and the tension that comes with it. The clean picking contiues and someone is reading poetry, maybe. This has been the most listener friendly bit so far. 6:50 It's heavy once again, and theres some random soloing with delay which straight away reminds me of the intro music to Monkey Magic when they talk about the Earth being formed. 8:10 is another new section, which is very ambient, the drums have finally stopped that constant beat, it actually feels peaceful now. There's some very light percussion, strange guitar noises, high pitched bells, and the keyboard ambience base. And with 2 loud bell notes, it ends. Oww, very unusual, and I don't really know what to think of the final product. My first reaction is that it's too hard to listen to, it will take time to get into something like this. Some bits weren't too difficult, and it was good to have them in there. The heavy bit's weren't too extreme for me in this song, so that's a plus too. It's too much to handle at thist time, I couldn't enjoy it.. so maybe 6.8/10 for now, but increasing with time. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Anathema - Temporary Peace - ambient, soft rock, only up to about 5:50 is needed, but go up to 7:52 if you want some more waves, beyond that lies the bonus tracks Electric Light Orchestra - Yours Truly, 2095 - 80's synth rock Trinity Machine - Phobos Anomaly - ambient electronic, a cover of a song from doom - http://machine.vectorstar.net Fagan - Dante - trip-hop http://www.fagan.com.au/mp3/dante-ext.mp3 Fagan - Slight Return - trip-hop http://www.fagan.com.au/mp3/slight%20return.mp3 |

Fagan - Dante
Oh hey, an Aussie band. Yeah!
Well, this is actually my first introduction to trip-hop. I must say I was pleasantly impressed, as you will find out later. Well, here we go... Fagan - Dante (5:12) The song starts with some rumbling, and then has a solo female vocalist entering at about 20 secs in. Very haunting and slow singing. Swells of sound can be heard from time to time, samples of orchestras and such. The song starts in earnest with a piano entering at around 1 min in, and a heavy bass beat at 1.30. I really like this so far. More of this continues till about 2.10, when a new singer enters amidst a new swell of noise. He soon dominates the female vocalist, and she fades out. Although I couldn't make out the lyrics, they sounded like a mix between Maynard and Bob Marley for some strange reason. At 3.30, the song takes a change, in favour of a new atmosphere, a very mild distortion on the male vocalist, and a few more lines from the female singer. The song begins to end at around 4.50, with each part fading out, first the bass, then the drums, then finally the singing and the background samples. The piano continues for a short while, before fading out also. Wow. This song is great. I really like this genre, perhaps not as much as my beloved R&M/metal, but perhaps equal to Trance/House. I'm giving it 7.5/10. AC/DC - Shoot To Thrill
I've always been on and off when it ocmes to AC/DC. I Like them, I dig all thier singles and stuff I've heard off the radio, but never developed enough interest to go out and buy an album of thiers. With that said, so begins my review:
The song kicks in with an opening guitar riff. Yup, this is definetly AC/DC. I was half expecting You Shook Me All Night Long to start (Don't ask me why ) . AC/DC always has the coolest intros. :) Anyway, the verse kicks in, and so does Brian Johnson. The song has a very nice rythym, the drums and bass blend in nicely with the guitars. I'm also liking this lyrics. I've noticed the lyrics have as much attitude as Johnson's voice, and that's a good thing. Chorus kicks in, and it's your basic AC/DC chorus, everything gets louder and faster. Very catchy. We get to another verse, it's moving along smoothly. Hit with another chorus. Usual AC/DC fare. 3:23. Breakdown time. Only a guitar and Drums are present, building up to something good :D . Here comes Johnson, screaming a lyric over and over again. Uh oh. Solo time. Nice AC/DC solo. Everything's going just as expected. And here comes the fade out. Good little ditty. Enough to make me go out and buy an album? Maybe. Sounded just as I expected it to sound. Which is good. I'm starting to really warm up to them. 7.5/10 P.S. Is this on the Back In Black Album? Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City (Acoustic Bruce) John Frusciante - Loss (Rock,... reflective) Beck - The Golden Age (Acoustic,... atmospheric) |

Beck - The golden age
I dont know how good this will be. Im not soo much of fan of this type of music Comes in with Guitar. Doing a pretty simple sounding pattern. bass slides in (literally) and it is kinda cheesy. drums follow that. theres also some wierd keyboard type sound. Lyrics at 48 sec. same riff, no keyboard though. bah, im already sick of this song. 1:34, getting bored now, waiting for the Bela Fleck that follows on my playlist. 1:50 or so, a type of chorus, same instruments, just different, annoying, off key-ish vocals. Still bored. starting to wonder if anything is going to happen. 3:15, another "chorus" an electric guitar has also joined with random strums of the same chord Sorry for the crappy reveiw. Not my kidna song, and its been a bad day. overall: 4/10. meh. My Recs: Victor Wooten/Bela Fleck - Amazing Grace (Basically its just a bass solo, still cool. funk groove) As I lay Dying - Collision (Christian "Death" metal) As I lay Dying - Behind Me Lies Another Fallen Soldier (Christian "Death" metal) Anacrusis - Paint a Picture (Speed/thrash....i dont really know) Shadows Fall - The Idiot Box (metal) Beatallica - Sgt. Anacrusis - Paint a Picture.
Starts out with some guitar riffage and some bass. The drums and singing come in soon, not bad, but I don't like the "clean" vocals he's trying to pull off. The guitar in this song is average thrash riffing, not that brilliant. The drums are about the same, average. You can hear the bass well though, which is nice. I don't really like the singer's voice, it doesn't seem to have much emotion in it, but that's just what I'm hearing right now. An interlude comes with about 3:30 left in the song. The song gets a bit better after this, but I still don't like the non-screamed vocals. Not a bad song, but also not very memorable or great. 6/10 My recommendations: Ballistic - Call Me Evil (Thrash) Canvas Solaris - Camera Obscura (Progressive Instrumental) Dark Funeral - Hail Murder (Black Metal) Limbonic Art - The Dark Paranormal Calling (Symphonic Black Metal, similar to Emperor) Suffocation - The Invoking (Death Metal) Spiral Architect - Insect (Progressive Metal) Windir - Arntor, Ein Windir (Viking/Black Metal (folk?)) |

Limbonic Art - The Dark Paranormal Calling
It has been a few years since i heard this band, i didnt really like them at the time, but my tastes have changed greatly since then, so it is time to give Limbonic Art another try. So here goes. It starts off with an ambient of sorts intro but that doesnt last long and goes into a blast beat. The vocals and other instruments come in quickly, and i can see how people can relate this to emperor, especially latter era emperor, really reminds me of something from prometheus, and the vocals sound a bit like Ihsahn at times too. The blast beat stops for what im assuming is the chorus, but still continues quite fast double basswise, however what might keep it from being a chorus is the fact that its only like 1 line long, and then the blastbeat comes back in. After that the song breaks down a little bit, but it sounds good and has a lot of atmosphere into it. After a few vocal lines the drumming slows down even more, but not for long, the double bass comes back in quickly. Some little bridge thing follows shortly thereafter, which while it isnt great, it fits the song well, and then more vocals follow, as was expected. And here we find a return to the verse afterwards. It breaks down again after the verse, and there are a few cool little subtle drumming things thrown in here that are kinda hard to hear but are really excellent. A similarly speeded part comes right after this for about 2 lines and has almost a symphonic feel to it, but not in the lame way bands like dimmu borgir do it. This is broken up with bridges between ever few lines, but continues for a while. The song pauses for a second for a quick drum fill, then the rest of the instruments continue, and we hear a note on the guitar that sounds like a solo is going to start, but no solo is present. After a few more measures that symphonic part comes back in. Once again there is a quick pause for a drum fill, and the same part continues on. This is followed by another, and judging by the time left in the song, probably final verse. Yep, that is the end. Overall id give it a 7.5/10, the song is pretty good, not amazing, but the drummer is top notch, and the tasteful use of symphonics in the song work well with the band, and i will have to check out more of their stuff. I like the sound of Summoning.
I'll try and do the Summoning song if I can (It's a pretty big song tbh 12mb on a ISDN line isn't pretty...) Very LotR inspired band, I think? |
yeah im uploading the yousendits right now, and summoning is higly LOTR inspired, so just give me a few more minutes (more like 30 my upload speed is pretty bad) to upload the yousendits, then you can just download whatever one you want and take it.

(I was looking at some of their songs and they have Nazgul march and stuff, sounds cool)
I've got half of In Hollow Halls Beneath The Fells, and previewed it. I actually like it, you'll have to excuse my review though, I'm not too good with music theory, and can't accurately tell an ocatve apart, for example. But I'll start my review based off the half I have heard: [0:00 - 0:31] It starts off with the drums playing a marching beat with a slight melodic riff coming from guitars. (Reminds me of the march on Helmsdeep, it's kinda deep and atmospheric). [0:32 - 1:03] The drums and guitar(s?) keep playing their same parts and a piano comes in playing a nice soft riff that slowly progresses higher in pitch until the singer comes in at 1:04. [1:04 - 1:36] The drums and the singer are the only two instruments here (There could be guitar in the background, really quiet? It's 12:00am here so I have the volume a bit low) the singer has a harsh roar-like sound to his voice, it's pretty good, and suits the music perfectly, I'm guessing their German? (In my opinion the voclist sounds like Dimmu Borgir's For All Tid, well a little less harsh, and better quality). [1:37 - 2:07] The drums, the guitar(s?) and the paino all play here, it's alot 'heavier' (Being louder) then anything yet, so it's almost as if the song is creeping up, the drums have a sort of drum rush. [2:08 - 2:38] The drumming slows down and the focal point is on the singer, he has some really cool echoes on his voice here, it's kinda creepy (Maybe that's just listenning to this song at 12:00am in pitch black!) [2:39 - 3:11] The song is sort of building up here, the guitars are becoming louder, over the top almost, it seems like a build up to climax. [3:12 - 3:45] It's really cool here, no drums just a sort of grand organ plays a progressive melodic piece. [3:45 - 4:11] Sounds like an accoustic guitar (Well electric guitar with no effects) plays a progression at the 4:12 point a guy (Sounding like Gandalf!) says "In The Darkness, Bind Them". [4:12 - 4:48] All instruments come back together at once with a really cool sounding mix the singer comes back in almost sounding like he's chanting, there's some pretty heavy sounding distortion on the guitar (Well one of them) that I like, it's subtle, but very effective, there's a melodic organ playing a heaps 'Pagan' sounding piece. (I think it sounds like something from a Pagan era marketplace). [4:49 - 5:20] The guy chanting "In The Darkness, Bind Them" comes back and repeats his line 4 times and the melodic organ stops. [5:21 - 5:51] The guitar(s?) are playing with the drums the same progression, at about 5:49 the drums start to speed up a bit and the singer comes in again. [5:52 - 6:23] The singer, drummer and guitar(s?) are all coming across, once again the singer has a cool echo sound to his voice. [6:24 - 6:55] The guitar(s?), drums and organ have their little instrumental part playing their progression once again. [6:56 - 7:28] The distrotion coms in again, but this time it's heavier, the singer also comes across but with a more brutal sound to his roar. [7:29 - 7:41] The organ and drums are playing their progression. And then the guy comes in with "In The Darkness, Bind Them" once again. [7:42 - 8:17] The singer comes in, once again with everything backing him, the distortion guitar is there, but it's not so loud anymore. [8:18 - End] The guy comes back and chants "In The Darkness, Bind Them" 4 times and then at 8:41 the music all stops, but he chants one more time, and the song finishes. Rating: 7.5/10 It was a really good song, I thought it was maybe a bit too long though. I liked the singer's voice, especially with the echoes. I will give props to the band though, especially their drummer, very talented and I will definately keep an eye out for them in the future. Edit: I'm sorry if I haven't done this song justice. Song Recommendations: Pscroptic - Cruelty Incarnate, from from their album The Scepter of The Ancients - Australian (Technical?) Death Metal. Osibisa - Y Sharp, from their album Woyaya - African 'rock' band, kinda mellow almost folk sounding. My Dying Bride - The Dark Caress, from their album Like Gods of The Sun - Death Metal, I think? Edit: Do I need to supply yousendits? Heh, I guess I do... |
well the yousendits are added, so if anyone wants any of those songs just to listen to, go right ahead.
And in response to you guessing that summoning is german, you are close, they are austrian, but same language. All the lyrics however are in english, if you havnt noticed by now :thumb: |
Psycroptic - Cruelty Incarnate
I've been hearing the name Psycroptic for ages, but never had a listen to them. Technical Death it is, the guitar riff to open is rather bouncy and it covers a few octaves, incorporating lead and chunky chords quite well. The drums are doing fast double kick underneath it. The drums stop after 3 bars or so. Then the vocalist starts growling something about something. The double kick drum speed varies over the bars. I'm liking the guitar work a fair bit, it reminds me quite a bit of Atheist, which is a great thing. Drums and vocals are the only other things that I'm noticing, and they don't excite me. Not saying they are badly played, just hard to take much notice of without them blending in together as a single unit of sound. The tempo changes slightly over the song too, some vocal screams, but most are growled, and I don't think they could be understood without reading the lyrics. Actually, the music in general is kind of progressive, I don't hear many riffs more than once. And essentially it's 5:26 of this. In the end, the guitar was the only thing that I really liked, it was done tremendously well, no real solo's, but some intense riffage in the vein of Atheist. I also think there was only one guitarist.. maybe that is being generous, but I don't think it ever sounded like 2 guitars. I never heard any bass guitar, or anything that stood out at least. I could try with headphones... some other time. Drums were played well, but I got no enjoyment from listening only to them. I guess the same goes for the vocals, I like to know what's being said without having to read along with it. The guitar surpassed all expectations I had prior to listening, but the music on a whole fell short. 7/10 ________________________________________________ King Mungi - Foulbody - decent melodic nu-metal XTC - Greenman - ahead of its time (70's) pop-rock Thyrfing - Dryckeskvade - viking metal, very piratey sounding! DJ Soup - Porthole To The Future
I have a feeling this does not belong in an R&M FL but I'll try it anyway. Begins with a mellow note, fluttery thing. Then spoken word and a simple drum beat. All very, very chilled out. I should smoke to this. It does some cool chaning stuff, adding and subtracting parts. Almost as the the entire song were played all the way through by every instrument and in some spots they were just muted. It is repetitive, but not very boring. It also doesn't demand change like some songs. It has plenty for what it is. I like it a lot, although it would never really get my juices flowing. There isn't a ton to say about it. I really liked the trumpet in the background near the end. It was a nice touch. Good song. but only a 6.5/10 (Death Metal) Lykathea Aflame - Flowering Entities (Nu Metal) Chevelle - Grab Thy Hand (Death metal/world music) Hollenthon - Vestige - Non Omnis Moriar* *over 7 minutes Ask for yousendits |
