I'm asking for a BIG iPod for Christmas.
Winter, you mentioned you had a 160GB (or something) external hard-drive for your laptop, would you be able to elaborate on what that is? And how they work? I have a mental picture of a rectangular box that connects with a USB cable or something but I dunno for sure. Hey madthumbs :thumb:.
Well there are two ways of doing it. You can buy an ordinary hardrive and a caddy, or you can buy a pre-built external hardrive, which is basically an ordinary hardrive, a caddy, and a premium pricetag . As with most things computer related it's best to do it yourself. Caddy - basically a box. Mine is a fairly sleek affair with LEDs on the front. You plug a power supply into the caddy, and the caddy converts it to the right voltage/amps etc to run the hardrive. There's also a data cable style thing in the caddy that connects to the hardrive. This is converted to USB 2.0, so you can plug said box straight into your computer. http://tinypic.com/f4210 http://tinypic.com/f421c http://tinypic.com/f421h |

So... what do you all think of Steinbergers?
|
i like the headlessness. my friend has an 80s steinberger guitar but i dont think its the original pick ups
|
hmm never played one but I'm not really a fan of their design
|
Good morning mx.

Sup. |
Gaslight - nip back to page 59
|
Ahh - cheers.
So I would save money by making my own? And the caddy needs to be plugged into a power source as well as the computer? |
Yeah - ordinarily a hardrive draws power from the computer, but as this one isn't in a computer it needs its own.
Do check prices, but I'd be surprised if it didn't turn out cheaper. It's all of two minutes work to fit a hardrive into a caddy. Two cables to plug in, and maybe a couple of screws to tighten. |
Okay cool cool.
So, it doesn't need to remain powered at all times, only when I need to use it? And, it is easy to build? |
To assemble mine I just screwed the hardrive into the caddy, and plugged in two cables. Simple as it gets.
You only need to plug it in when you're using it. If the hardrive is utterly new, it'll need formatting and partitioning, but that's true of any hardrive, internal or external. And if you need, I can guide you through that. |
Sweet :).
If I wanted, could I power it from a portable source? And yeah, so I can just go to the computer store and buy a hard drive of whatever size I want, and they will also sell the caddy? I have a friend who is good with customising computers so I might be able to get him to help me as well, or set me up with cheap parts. Should be good :D. How much does a hard drive cost roughly? I've never bought one on its own before. |
Wintermute is now a 6 stringer, I love you!
Good mornin' all :) |
I bought mine in August for £70, that was a 160Gb drive. I got the Caddy for £30. £70 being about AU$170
Hardrive prices have likely come down a little since then. A portable source... not sure about that. If you are an electrician, or can find a caddy that will take one. If they exist, they'll be more expensive. I use my external for music and other media, as well as backups. The idea is I carry my laptop round and do work, then get home and plug in to that and the speakers and presto! Multimedia centre. |
Ah sweet, I suppose I could either go that way and get an external hard drive, or just get a laptop with a massive hard drive? Though I do remember hearing laptops don't tend to have really massive hard drives, or it's very expensive compared to a desk computer.
|
Yes, they are. The reason being big hardrives have to work fast to find the information you want without delay, and this produces more heat. Everything a laptop designer does is a batte against heat, as there is little room for heatsinks and next to no room for air circulation. I've not seen a laptop with more than 80GB, 40-60Gb is normal.
|
Ah, that explains it.
I don't think I'd really need anything more than 40GB within immediate reach at any time, maybe 60 just to be safe or something. Cheers :). |
you should put that rhyme into the lyrics page, its pretty good
|
Anytime.
you should put that rhyme into the lyrics page, its pretty good
Haha, the sad thing is it's pretty much the same as when I actually write lyrics/poetry . |
Anyway, out of curiosity, what are the living arrangements for you guys?
Do most of us live at home with one or two parents? Or do some of you have your own place? |
I'm at uni, so I live in a rented house with 4 other students.
Who I am sure are just crazy about my subwoofer, bass amp, and occasional all night bassing sessions. (my fingers hurt :upset: ) |
My parents are devorsed so I'm living with my mother at the moment... but I'm moving soon.. when your 20 it's starting to be a drag to live with your mother :D
|
Ah yeah, I live with my mum too.
I'm 18, and I plan to start saving soon for an apartment or flat or something. It's probably much more expensive than I can handle though, so it might not happen for a few years. I would really like to have my own place by roughly the time I turn 19. |
Wintermute: That's great!! Me and some friends from Colledge (I think.. don't remember the translation) are doing the exact same thing when we start at Uni next year :) But they are musicians as well so they won't mind :P
|
Hah! The neighbours might!
If I lived with musicians the jamming would never cease... |
