BWP is my fav. album + song of Opeth

RouteOne 09-10-2006 10:54 AM
That is odd, seeing as how most fans of that album adore that song.

What's your reasoning?
It was cool the first time I listened to it, but after more listens it got old to me I guess.

*shrug*

I'm jamming out to Forest of October currently.

BWP, while being an epic an excellent track, can't compete with the greatness of the album's opening two titans.

So are you a fan of older Opeth to their newer stuff, then?

I love all of their stuff. Just some songs of theirs get old to me, but they are only a handful. I'm more of a old school Opeth fan though.

Their older stuff had more atmosphere, but the newer material appeals to me more because their songwriting improved greatly and has some of the best metal riffs known to man.

The Leper Affinity at 2:10 = orgasms everywhere for Thor

The Leper affinity is such a good song.

You couldn't more correct.

Currently I'm really digging "In the Mist She Was Standing" though. Those opening harmonized guitars get me every time.

Thats what attracts me to their old stuff more. Double harmonies are sweet.

While most Opeth fans love that stuff, Mikael hates it now. If you've seen their documentary on their DVD he says that he just can't stand that sound anymore because everyone in Sweden was doing it.

Shame that they won't ever sound like that again. It'd be cool for them to do an album that went back to the early days of Opeth. A nice change of pace.

Yeah, I have the DVD. It's a shame, since their earlier stuff was brilliant.

NP: Opeth- The night and the silent water.

I like their "newer" stuff more (BWP and Deliverance being my two favorites), but the old songs still have a soft spot for me. To Bid You Farewell is so close to being the band's best song ever.

What kidn of music are Opeth?

Thor 09-10-2006 11:11 AM
What kidn of music are Opeth?
Progressive death metal.

Shattered_Future 09-10-2006 11:12 AM

Progressive death metal, but they aren't held down to the stereotypes of progressive metal or death metal. It's heavy at parts, soothing at others. Intertwining distorted guitars and death growls mixed with singing, keyboards, and acoustics.

I'd like to see Opeth rerecord Morningrise with Steve Wilson.

Eliminator 09-10-2006 11:12 AM

oh i always thought they were nu-metal or something

RouteOne 09-10-2006 11:14 AM
oh i always thought they were nu-metal or something
Oh god no. the "nu" in nu-metal stands for "new urban" which means it's rock or metal with hip-hop elements in it. Opeth clearly does not have any rap influences in their music. :p

Shattered_Future 09-10-2006 11:14 AM
oh i always thought they were nu-metal or something
That's an offense punishable by death.

I won't do it, but others will...

Quit messing around. I know that you don't really think that. :thumb:

RouteOne 09-10-2006 11:17 AM

Then again....if Opeth ever did release a album with rap influences, I think i'd have to burn their CD's.

That would be the day the world would end. Babies heads would explode and my hair would light on fire.

Start burning...

Just because it ryhmes doesn't mean it's rap.:p

When an Opeth album comes out referring to Melinda as a "ho" or "chicken head", THEN i'll start burning.

BurningSky 09-10-2006 11:40 AM
Just because it ryhmes doesn't mean it's rap.:p
Of course not, but this particular section emulates a hip-hop style beat. Just because the riff is created with distorted guitar doesn't mean it can't be rap...

Besides, rap as a style isn't bad at all, it's when the mainstream black stereotypes ruin it that makes it bad...

EDIT: Mikael refers to melind as "A harlot of God upon the earth" which is the same as a ho'...

Spoonful of Shame 09-10-2006 11:43 AM

I think in the Lamentations dvd Mikael says the first song he ever wrote when he was young was called "I hate hip-hop". hahaha.

Sombody on UltimateMetal did this awesome photoshop of Mikael during an interview. They put a backwards hat on his head, gave him hilarious shades, and a huge piece of bling. I wish I could find it...

I've seen that. I almost pissed myself the first time I stumbled across it.

I thought it was real for a while, too. Doesn't that strike anyone else as something Mikael would do to poke at the hip-hop trend?
