I think its obvious, Dyers Eve is his best drumming. Not only does it match the song, it took him 10 years to be able to play that song.
And Dyers Eve just kicks ***.
And by todays drumming standards, its pathetical really.

Actually, even back then it was pretty tame.

That and he cant play it now, or then.

i doubt that. where'd you hear it took him 10 years to play his own song?

NP: "One" from S&M

^^best version IMO

by todays standards? he is a god by todays standards. yes, his drumming may be simple at times....but can you play dyers eve? battery? damage inc? probably not

vashts80 03-20-2005 12:09 PM

By today's standards it is. Go look at any death metal band and compare their drumming to Dyers Eve.

Edit: And no, he can't really play it. He can't do the double kicks at all.

DisposableHeroes 03-20-2005 12:15 PM

But its not like Metallica requires blastbeats or anything, he compliments the music best he can i think

Ibanex0110 03-20-2005 12:26 PM

I guess i can't argue him not doing the double, i have that song, but i've also heard in from 2003 play no remorse with just about as fast, if not faster double bass in it...so idk why he didnt for dyers eve

Thrash_The_Sabbath 03-20-2005 01:08 PM

dude....i think that One has some of Lars' best drumming. That double bass kick to match the guitar palm muting was suprurb. It may have been simple but at the same time it was probably one of the most interesting things Metallica had done. They should use more double bass pedal, it adds that thudding effect to songs.

no, he was never good, by any standards. Funny how people think Dyers Eve is so good, but he can't play it live. Come on fanboys, you can still be a metallica fan, and realize Lars is not much of a drummer. I like Metallica, but I don't think he is to much of a drummer. He can get the job done although.

Seriously, are you judging todays drumming on what you hear played on the radio today? Todays standards for dumming have lifted a lot higher in the underground.

RiceMonster 03-20-2005 01:38 PM
I don't judge by the radio, thanks. And yeah, I have definitely heard better drumming.
I didn't say you did.

when joey jordison subed for him,he tryed to play these fast beats and fucked everything up,he messed up a bunch of slow songs by trying to play fast double kick beats, that proves that all drummers that play all out double bass can only play fast beats while lars can play slow and fast

But then again, Joey Jordinson is a terrible drummer. So that is a terrible example of fast drummers.

Anyways, To learn to play fast double kick beats, you have to start out slow don't you? So I think it's common sense that you can play slow. Unless you ment to say they have no rhythm.

No, I don't know very much about drumming, I play guitar, bass, and keyboards. But if you search under Joey Jordinson, you will find a thread by Det_Nosip, who knows a lot more than most of us about drumming explaining why he is bad.

Death metal is not at all just playing double bass fast. Listen to Lykathea Aflame, and Cryptopsy, just to name two, then come back and say that again.

Echleon 03-20-2005 03:01 PM

Hey guys, this is a Metallica thread, take this outside.

Does anyone know when Metallica plan to the tour the UK again?
I really want a chance to see them before they pack it in.

joey jordinson is not a terrible drummer. and im not a drummer so i couldnt help you with that double bass question.

but when your trying to learn something fast on guitar you ussually start by playing it slow then speed it up when you get the hang of it.

END OF DRUMMING CONVORSATION

I hear some people say that MoP and AJFA aren't thrash. I kind of agree. They have far fewer thrashy songs on those two. Do you think this had anything to do with Dave Mustaine? He was part of the writing process for most of there thrashy songs. Do you think it was his departure that it stopped the thrash assault? When they ran out of material from the Mustaine areas do you think it stopped the thrashiness?
