To what Sade said:

Thanks man, I forgot how awesome philosophy is! :thumb: My ethics teacher made me hate everything related to it, including philosophy. Ah, now I feel like finishing reading that Nietzche book I started reading a while ago.

Free crits for everyone!

EDIT:

We have the  for that u no

So, um, anybody have an author or a book that they're diggin at the moment? I started reading Angels by Denis Johnson again. Love his style of writing; it kinda reminds me of Chuck Palahniuk's style, but less gimmicky.

ER, the only band I haven't heard of on that list is Jaga Jazzist. :) Pretty cool name, I'll have to check them out.

TojesDolan 02-27-2006 07:57 PM

I'm not reading a lot... I should though. A lot of latin/iberoamerican stuff, but nothing concrete. Maybe Gabriel Garcia Marquez a bit, but nothing extra especialized.

Well, that and I have the reading of "The summer of the Barshinkeys" still in queue.

metaliq 02-27-2006 08:11 PM

You mentioned Chucky P, so I presume you have read Fight Club... Hm.

I also take it you have read Brave New World... because most everyone has. If not, check that out.

I am also going to read Player Piano by Vonnegut soon. Has anyone read that?

DeadReligion 02-27-2006 08:44 PM

I'm enjoying American Lesion (Greg Graffin's solo outfit), his piano only version of Cease, is amazing.

slack 02-27-2006 09:11 PM

FYI, 24 is a fucking amazing show.

But yeah, I've read Fight Club. The only other book by him that I've read is Survivor, which was actually the first one I read. Then I went through a period where I tried to imitate his writing style, haha. That didn't work out so well. :)

Brave New World is amazing. I end up re-reading it every other year or so. 1984, too. I love dystopian themes for some reason.

TojesDolan 02-27-2006 09:37 PM

Hmm... I should check that stuff out as well.

And yes, Jack Bauer owning half the world is quite amazing.

FA 02-27-2006 10:59 PM

Brave New World is such an eerie book. It almost gave me chills when I'd read how the babies were "born" and how they were treated and maintained up until their drone-like lifestyle of adulthood.

metaliq 02-27-2006 11:19 PM

Player Piano, one of the next books I plan on reading, has to do with a robotic world I believe. Hmm.

slack 02-27-2006 11:30 PM

I just read a synopsis of it online.

"Vonnegut's first novel, an unforgiving portrait of an automated and totalitarian future, was published in 1952. A human revolt against the machines which control life was arranged by the machines themselves to prove the futility of such resistance."

Sounds excellent.

metaliq 02-28-2006 01:10 AM

That it does.

Now I just need to finish re-reading 1984. :)

So no one has read it then? Hmph. Even more fun.

EmergencyRoom 02-28-2006 04:25 AM

Also forgot to mention secret machines. And Jaga Jazzist are awesome.

Sade 02-28-2006 06:54 AM

Brave New World > 1984, IMO.

Simply because it captures that sort of dark, mundane growth of trivialities into the systemic culmination of the distopian society.

1984 was excellent, too; though. "It's not losing, it's experiencing a negative win situation."

TojesDolan 02-28-2006 12:04 PM

Reading what others haven't is far more pleasing that it seems.

Really.

<_<

drumass04 02-28-2006 01:40 PM

'Brave new world' is a fantastic book, I really enjoyed reading it. But then again I enjoyed reading '1984'.

At the moment I'm reading 'Made in America' by Bill Bryson, it's absolutely fantastic. It's not a novel, but it is...that makes no sense but nevermind. Very interesting reading about the progression of the English language in the states, and also the roots of place names across the USA. Many actually originate from the Indians. Incredibly interesting read.

Also read 'Of mice and men', though that was for school, a very interesting book when you delve into it a little more deeply than just reading. That also applies to 'The Crucible', another fantastic read.

deathscreamingsheep 02-28-2006 02:00 PM

I'm a big fan of Bryson's writing, while out of date now, his travel books like "Notes from a Small Island" are hilarious.

Also I would recommend a history of nearly everything which, after giving up sciences a couple of years back has rekindled my long dead interest. I have it in tape form and listen to it in the car a lot.

drumass04 02-28-2006 02:23 PM

'Notes from a small island' is one of my favourite of Brysons books. It's kina informative and hilarious at the same time.
Slackjaw: If you're looking for some ambient sounding bands to listen to then here are a few suggestions, some have already been mentioned.

Sigur Ros
Godspeed...
Explosions in the Sky
Jaga jazzist
Mogwai
Radiohead ( Kid A is a must listen if you like this sort of thing, more electronic than the others but still excellent)
Porcupine Tree
The Mahivishnu Orchestra ( Strictly more prog-jazz-fusion than post-rock but considering how much i cking hate genre divisions i don't care :-)
That's all post-rock.

If you want acutal music centered around ambience, I'd suggest

Brian Eno - Ambient 1
Brian Eno - Ambient 2
Autechre - Amber
Sunn - Black One
Sunn - 3: Flight of the Behemoth
Black Dice - Beaches & Canyons
Set Fire to Flames - Sings Reigns Rebuilder

That should be a good start. If you like it, or need any of it. Pixiesfanyo is my AIM.

Nightvision 02-28-2006 03:27 PM

I'm currently debating whether to read War and Peace - as much to say I've done it as anything else. Has anyone else read it? Is it worth the endless hours?

EDIT: in other news, this is by far and away the best community thread I've seen.

Pride++

drumass04 02-28-2006 03:34 PM

I've also been considering reading 'War and Peace', thing is, I just don't have the time!! I'm sure I will eventually!

This is certainly the best community thread on MusicianForums/MX/Sputnik whatever yuou want to call it. I haven't seen many that have the same range of conversation topics, and people tend to be able to express their opinion and not get killed for it!! It's probably because we're all literate (or pretend to be anyway)

Timmy P

pixiesfanyo 02-28-2006 03:49 PM

My suggestion for a book would always be The Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs.

TojesDolan 02-28-2006 04:32 PM

/gets all sentimental

Yeah. Very good community. Even if Burt spanks us every once on a while for getting off topic about the lyrics... but anything related to literate conversation should be somewhat a topic.

On a related note, I'll see if I can get hooked up with some music later. And I just had the second craziest sushi/ribs buffet in my life. I feel like a pig and I can barely breathe, but it's all good since it was only 5 bucks. :D

drumass04 02-28-2006 04:40 PM

Hahaha, sounds good to me, nothing like lots of decent cheap food!! There's a chinese place near me that does an all you can eat thing for £3.50, and an indian restaraunt that does an all you can eat for £5.00. Crazy prices for such awesome food!!

I think eating is one of my favourite past times, I'm giving up comfort eating for Lent though, so it could be interesting. I'm also giving up alcohol, fast food (I don't have that much anyway so it's not a problem), and I'm also giving up fizzy drinks/pop. It's the most I've ever given up before, but it shouldn't be too hard. It'll do me good!!!
There's a chinese place near me that does an all you can eat thing for £3.50, and an indian restaraunt that does an all you can eat for £5.00.
Good god. I'm glad I'm not your digestive system. :p

drumass04 02-28-2006 04:48 PM

Hahaha, it's a rare treat, it's rare that I eat out like that. I go to these places perhaps once every couple of months at the most. I much prefer eating a salad at home. But then again, I do have an extremely fast metabolic rate, and I do a lot of exercise; I run about every other night, I go hill walking or climbing every other weekend. During the athletics season I train for at least an hour every day, either jumping - I hold my school and district high jump records, I also have the under14's county record though i can't defend it any more as i'm 15. Or running - I hold the school record for 400m, and my house relay team holds the school record for 4x100m (I take final leg)

Timmy P

Nightvision 02-28-2006 04:52 PM

Nice. What's your record at high jump? At about 15 I was jumping 1.60ish I think, but I was always pretty good at high jump because I'd been doing gymnastics for about 8 years at that point.
I hate you all, by the way. You're all writing really well, and I can't string together two words.

drumass04 02-28-2006 05:03 PM

I haven't jumped in a few months, but this time last year i was jumping about 1.60outdoors, 1.65 indoors (when i was 14), i'm aiming for 1.70 indoors this year. if i get that, i'll crack the county record for under 15s, and beat all the school records!!

I'm proud that I jump higher than my teacher, he's a qualified high jump coach, and I was jumping about the same as him last year, should be more this year, unless he's been practicing in secret!

Timmy P

DeadReligion 02-28-2006 05:06 PM

^ Well someone has a high opinion of himself. Lol, jk. That's sweet, I should exercise more...I find writing much too addicting, however.

drumass04 02-28-2006 05:09 PM

Hahaha, I like to show off about the few things I am good at!!

Anyway, I'm gonna grab a shower and go to bed, school in the morning, and it's already 11:10pm.

Hopefully my attempt at livening up the place tonight half works, who knows.

I'll be back tomorrow, hopefully a little more awake than now!!

Night everyone,

Timmy P

Nightvision 02-28-2006 05:13 PM

That's pretty damn good. :)

I was always better at the triple jump though - at 15 I was jumping about 10.5m consistantly, which was fairly good even if I do say so myself. I don't do it any more though, as I ruptured the ligaments in my knee playing football, and I can't risk the high impact of the jumps. :(

DeadReligion 02-28-2006 05:15 PM

I like to show off about the few things I am good at!! < Hah. I feel ya. All I'm good at is writing, so I get cocky about that sometimes.

metaliq 02-28-2006 06:02 PM

Oh man. Chinese food is amazing.

My girlfriend is to paranoid about eating a lot... so I feel bad when we go out to chinese buffets. We went to one on Valentines day because Applebee's was full. Haha. We could have waited around... but I would rather have had General Tsou Chicken, or whatever they call it.

I have to give a demonstrative speech Thursday for my Public Speaking class. I think I plan on telling people how to make a good house out of Legos for 6 minutes. If anyone has any better ideas, let me know. :)

My other one was making tea... Boiling water for a few minutes then drinking it. Probably talking about it while I made it, but still. Tea rocks.

slack 02-28-2006 06:41 PM

Do you guys think a flash-fiction thread would work in here? Something for short, 100-500 word pieces? I wouldn't mind it as a break from all the poetry.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 02-28-2006 07:03 PM

I think short fiction would be kind of nice, I enjoy reading it, though I wouldn't really give a critique other than if I liked it or had a question.

Nightvision 02-28-2006 07:06 PM

Yah, critiquing would be a pain, but I'd probably enjoy reading some of them at least.

slack 02-28-2006 07:09 PM

Yeah, I was thinking it'd just be a place to post whenever and as often as someone wanted. No crits or anything.

Nightvision 02-28-2006 07:35 PM

lawl, now watch as it fills up with amateur scene-kid erotica. *shudder*

I may submit at some point, although right now my creative juices have frozen solid. :(

slack 02-28-2006 07:45 PM

Hopefully it won't turn into Lyric Game Fing II. :)

I'll probably submit something later tonight, after practice. Have to at least spend some time with the guitar. :)

TojesDolan 02-28-2006 07:48 PM

It could be meade, without the critiquing hassle. Maybe a comment or two or whatever.

It can be made.

I submitted. Haven't checked yet.
