Across Five Aprils - Blue-Eyed Suicide

Never heard of these guys before... Never really listened to Chrisitan Metal before so I have no idea what to expect.

[0:00] - [0:08] - Starts Off with a really nice clean riff. The drums and a higher guitar then proceed to come in.

[0:08] - [0:19] - It then explodes into a heavier riff, that sounds pretty good, just the soft chord progression above played with distortion.

[0:20]-[0:30] - Then into the verse. The singer has a voice the reminds me very much of the hardcore/punk genre.

[0:30] - [0:50] - The verse intensifies here, the Singer screams instead of singing clean, it sounds ok, but just a little bit weak, imo like all hardcore singers. The drums have a pretty quick double kick going underneath, with guitars strumming chords pretty quickly, however they are not overly deep.

[0:50]-[0:52] Nice little drum roll to lead into the next part of the song, and anacrusis I believe it is called although I'm not to sure on the spelling ;)

[0:52]-[1:25] Pretty heavy part with relatively slow chords, the singer has a deeper scream here Then it slows down again, much slower, then it slows again.

[1:25]-[1:37] This part is used to bring the song back up to speed I think.

[1:37]-[2:05] The chorus is here, and the singer has to me a pretty annoying clean voice its high, but not like Maynard quality, its sounds... nasaly? Something just doesn't seem right about it. The lyrics also aren't overly complex.

[2:05]-[2:22] - Nice little clean instumental section sounds pretty good. Not overly complex but sounds alright.

[2:22]-[2:53] - the above is interupted by the vocalist screaming and distorted guitars. Pretty much the same as the above verse without the double kick.

[2:53]-[2:56] - NIce little guitar fill with band stabs following and another anacrusis but this time the singer into the chorus.

[2:56]-[3:30] - Pretty standard chorus except the end, it has a drum fill and the guitars fade out.. the song sounds to have finished... except it doesn't.

[3:30]-[4:15] The drums start this little extra bit at the end with the bass drum pounding out the rhythm. The guitars then copy this though they have a tremelo picked note that sounds out of key and imo sounds terrible. There is a fill that sounds pretty random, the drums keep the beat but the guitarist's just go nuts and hit notes on random beats etc. The singer then comes in and starts screaming. The same structure at the start of these little bit is kept throughout but now the chords on the drums pulses are higher... The song closes with the drums keeping the same rhythm and the guitars palm muting a low chord in time with drums.

I didn't really enjoy this that much really. They seem to sound more hardcore than metal to me, and I really didn't enjoy the singers voice. All the instruments seemed alright, not overly skilled, except the bassist I didn't really here one if there is one.

The song didn't need that extra part at the end, and would have sounded much better if it had of ended at [3:30]

Gravity - A Perfect Circle

Bah, not one of my fav. APC Songs, but oh well

Starts with a cool, clean, calm riff. Too much bass comes in with drums, kind of ruining the calming effect of the song.
Vocals join very quickly, his voice is awesome as always.
Chorus at about 55 (im guessign) seconds, the riff is still exactly the same on bass, similar on guitar. begining to get annoying.
back to the verse, same thing AGAIN
back to the chorus, exactly the same STILL
At 2:52, i hoped it would get harder, it doesnt. But the riff finally changes, to something equal as simple as APC goes.

That was the worst review ive ever had to do
4/10, and that only cuz i like his voice.

If you know the song your not supposed to review it. And I said that the song was soft rock, you had the wrong idea about the song, I just believe it deserves better than a 4/10.

And you also didn't mention the bridge.

So you listen to some of their worst work (excluding the Package).

12 Stones - Lifeless

Your YSI was no good. A corrupted mp3. Good work douchebag.

Begins with a catchy sub-par metalcoreish riff. A little too slow and the drums are unimpressive but decent. Quickly into the pop-metal verse with a slightly raspy whiny singer. They do the classic build up through the pre-chorus to lead you into the chorus. I'm not sure, but the guitar riff doesn't seem to have changed, only the effects on it.

There is a cool phaser-fied little bridge then back to verse-prechorus-chorus. I dislike how predictable all the melodies are. Nothing interesting to jump out. None of the instruments are jumping out. I enjoy it for the most part except for the singers voice.

Christ. This is a guitar solo? It's a poorly done blues solo with distortion. The timing is bad and the phrasing miserable. Why can't nu/pop metal solos be like the one in that Evanescence song I like. Going Under I think? at least that guy pretends to know his way around a guitar.

The outro has a croaky sort of growl. Reminds me of Dani Filth. It does however grab my attention. I wish it didn't suck but it was the most interesting part of the song.

2/10 points are only from the fact that this song would make decent background music in an action movie.
density metal hey... what's that?

I decided to label the style of music Isis plays Density Metal since there are a number of bands that play it but it's too pure to fit into sludge.

Bump before I go to bed. Looks like you folks are stuck with an 8 minute Neurosis song. At least it's awesome.

Its not only that, but you said you would check out both the songs, and you clearly reviewed the worse of the two songs... because you stated "Probably the worst review I've had to do" and you also said "I will check out both songs and then reply"...

I'll give that Neurosis a go then, sounds like it could be good. dibs, hope ysi works this time.

Neurosis - Burn

Guitar, feedback and drums are the starting contenders. It's faster than I expected, still not too fast. There's that sparse post-rock guitar style I would have thought to be there, its clean too. The vocalist comes in and has a strange dying groan, sings a few lines with the guitar and drums. When he stops, the guitar does some distorded riffs with a few slides.

At 2:14 it becomes rather heavy, with some Mogwai like wall of noise, then at 2:26 it gets even heavier. Then drops off to a very soft ambient section with only 2 chords. The singer now talks with some echo that sounds really strange and interesting. It goes on for a while, a nice thing to do when ambience is involved.

The last vocal line of the section is yelled and then it busts back into the heaviness of before. Simple tremolo picked lead guitar and a low power chord line are the most noticeable here. The guitars interplay a bit, harmonizing on some high notes.

By 6:30 it's all dropped away except for some keyboard doing a few chord changes, which then fades out too. Theres 7 mins of music, and not that much to say about it.

Hey, not bad. Faster than the Isis song I FL'd not long ago, but rather similar everywhere else. The music was good, and I like how it went pretty calm in the middle. The vocalist was a bit strange to listen to, like Tom Waits meets Layne Staley, I guess I could get used to it though, especially when it comes along with a type of music that I seem to like so far.

8/10

Wumpscut – Black Death (French Concept)

Wumpscut – Black Death (French Concept)
Time: 5.48

Starts out with some atmospheric sounds, plus a bit of spoken French. Then the intro begins in earnest with an infectious bass beat, followed by rapidly loudening riff, with a whispered “make my body burn”.

The riff gains distortion and momentum, with drums adding in effect. An interesting note is that the tempo of the guitar is at least four times as fast as the drums, which I thought added nicely to the song.

A return to the female vocalist, again speaking in French. A rehash of the first part follows, and this general pattern is repeated once more. Then the riff changes, to a more frenzied one, also signalled by a change in drumming and bass beat. No real solo, only a new riff and some intuitive drumming, but I was still enjoyed this song as a whole. The singer produces some new lyrics, as well as showing credible voice control later on, which I felt was necessary, as it began to grow stagnant after a while.

On the whole, I liked this song, even in light of it’s sometimes annoying repeats. I would like to listen to some more Wumpscut, in the future. I give it 8/10.

My picks:

The Doors – 20th Century Fox (Classic Rock)
AC/DC – Shoot To Thrill (Classic Hard Rock)
The Wildhearts – Return To Zero (Popular Rock with some Metal influences)
Emperor – Thus Spake The Nightspirit (Atmospheric Black Metal)
Scorpions – Speedy’s Coming (Classic Metal)

Emperor - Thus Spake the Nightspirit (Atmospheric Black Metal)

The song opens with a very evil feel. Evil Guitaring, evil bass, evil synths and reasonably evil drums. Not much going on here. Overall a very evil feel with just a dash of foreboding.
Around the 15 second mark a gutteral screm saunters its way across my speakers and this is joined by a steady drum part, which drives the whole song forward. The evil feel remains and at around 50 seconds vocals, scramed in your usual Black metal way, join and give the song a subject.
Ever since the drums settled into a steady the beat the song has been very fast and heavy. It's good.
1:20 and we branch off into a new section with some great riffage by the rhythm guitar and some good lead work by the, believe it or not, lead guitar.
The synth is pretty overpowering after this, and is borderline cheesy.
The riffs vary but all stay within a very similar style, so the song gets a bit repetitive.
3:00 and we again head off in a new direction. A different style of riff here along with a half time feel show the atmospheric part of this song.
The combination of the guitar work and snyth here is marvellous, I'm really liking this.
About 4:00ish overdubbed clean vocals come in and the song end.

I'm not a massive Black Metal fan, but alot of the Emporer stuff that I've heard has been good. This song is no exception.
The majority of the song is repetitive but the atmospheric section at the end is really great. 8/10 overall.

Wes Montgomery - Airegin

I like jazz.

Begins with some cool quick little guitar bursts. Everything is moving pretty fast. The drummer is swishing away in the back. The bass is also cooking. The piano is basically the only thing not moving fast. I really like the guitar tone. sounds like live lounge jazz.

I dig.

The guitarist has a bunch of dead notes floating around. He is good but those dead notes make him less good. He is really the reason this music is hear. That bassist just keeps going though.

There is a lot of really cool interplay between the guitar and bass and the piano too once in a while.

The piano "solo" is pretty cool. The guitar goes away and the piano takes over. Now he is moving pretty quickly. The part does some really cool stuff. Then a sort of bass solo where everything else gets quiet but the bass part doesn't really change. The guitar and piano are doing quick little diddles in the background. Then drum solo fills brea up the music. It's really cool. I like how it cuts in then the music just starts right up again.

The ending is tight. just one of those quick fall down sort of things.

9/10 I liked it a lot.

Neurosis - Tide

I liked the last Neurosis song i heard, i hope this will be the same

Starts with a synth, underwater-y type sound. Brings in an Opeth-style acoustic, with a very good, soothing riff. The ambiance remains behind it, adding to the soothing-ness.
At 1:05, bass and singing enters. The vocals are a little raspy, as if someone has been screaming/crying. Kinda spooky, very soothing still. he says a few lines, whilst the guitar riff continues, with the ambiance, and the bass playing a pretty low note softly in the background.

Then, at 1:46, another voice comes in, an octave (?) higher. The high vocals sound like they were run through a distortion pedal with only a slight amount of gain.

2:20 or so, drums come in. Very slow tom hits, maybe on beat one of every measure, with a quarter-tripelet eighth ride pattern. Also, strings acompany the whole piece. Very very very soothingly good. Very much so reminds me of Opeth except the lyrics

3:25, we go back to the first lyrics part. the "verse" i guess. Then the "chorus", with the piano, then the drums pattern again.

At 4:17, it starts to transform to metal. Some one hits a distortion switch, which sounds like it will take over and morph the song. But, then, we get taken aback with a piano fill, with no acc. Then a screetching feedback on guitar, and METAL

4:56, the metal half of the song begins. With a full, normal band. Playing a very Opeth-like riff. Strings come in after abotu 30-45 secs. then a scream, his voice is very good with the higher pitched growls. Cant really understand him though. Periodically, a higher, harmonic guitar jumps in. Very cool sound when it does. makes it sound much "smoother"

At 6:50, it changes yet again, slow down some. the bass seems to be too great here, its taking over my headphones. Almost blocking out the guitars, but not quite. probobly a problem on my end. hmph.

That is the way the song ends. Snice it was so long, i will do a three part overall rating. The first half, the second half, and the song as a whole
First Half: 11/10 it was just that great
Second: 7/10 not enough variety in the riffage
Together: 9/10 Enough variety that it was a very entertaining review.

Can you guys review my review, jsut to let me know how i did? that would be greatly appreciated.

Seems like a good review to me. You put in what you thought of the song as it progressed, not just what was happening with the music, I think that is important to do.

Also, very good review.

Dancin' Man 03-26-2005 11:11 PM

Shadows Fall - Idle Hands

Begins with a fast metalcore riff. Pretty simple, but cool. This could turn out to be decent metalcore. Oooohhh, not expecting those vocals. I don't like the yelling ones but the growls are half-way decent. The guitars are doing some cool stuff.

Dammit, into a classic metalcore section. The singer is trying to sing and he sucks at it. At least he's lower in the mix than the guitar.

There is a bunch of repetition before we get to the type of metalcore riff I really love. THe pinch harmonics that jump out. You all know what I'm talking about. Then a solo! It's decent. Not amazing but does some cool stuff.

All in all this song is pretty good. I can imagine checking this band out further. Not at the top of my list by any means, but decent. This gives metalcore a good name.

8/10
