Finnish bands are awesome...well...most of them.

Does anyone else think JP really blows?

MRDuCran 04-15-2006 04:25 PM

Nope.

I'm Charming 04-15-2006 04:33 PM
Does anyone else think JP really blows?
No. How did you come up with that?

Please explain.

I think he blows.

I meant give facts. "he blowz" doesn't mean anything.

Explain why.

As in, he blows you, in your dreams?

Shadows 04-15-2006 04:57 PM

lol @ Matas

I can't really give any facts here. It's just a personal opinion. Technically speaking he's very good, but I can't stand him or any bands he's ever been affiliated with.

Alright.

lol @ you never the less

He's better than Alexi Laiho, IMO

Muhammad Sucimez owns both though.

Those supposed "guitar gods" annoy the living hell out of me. I'd take Alexi (and Muhammad) over any of them.

lol @ me? :(

Why because JP can give a great sweep picking demo WITHOUT fucking up?

cough laiho cough

He's technically leagues above Alexi, his technique is flawless & beautiful, plus he's not an immature drunk.

Keep in my I still love Alexi, it's just the truth.

I've seen Alexi do plenty of demonstrations without fucking up. He also happens to have a sense of humor and can play with some substance; that's what I like about him. JP mindlessly shreds until I'm bored out of my mind, and his near-perfect playing is part of what makes him incredibly boring.

Call it a different way to interpret the truth.

Shattered_Future 04-15-2006 05:10 PM

Petrucci is an ungodly guitarist. He's also one of the most boring people to watch ever.

Therefore, he doesn't appeal to me...granted, I'll listen to some Dream Theater every so often, and I'd go see them live again, but the guy is ****ing boring.

AA-12 04-15-2006 05:19 PM

I disagree. John Petrucci is one of the most interesting guitarists out there in my opinion. I can't help this thought because i'm a pretty big Petrucci/DT/LTE fanboy.

MRDuCran 04-15-2006 05:28 PM

I have to agree with Ben, Laiho fucks up all the time but it's his stage prescence and random improvs that keep stuff interesting. There was a point where I was exactly like him, just playing through a song, fukking up a solo and then just grabbing the bar and playing harmonics to cover it up, now I'm out of that.

But still, Petrucci is good to look up to to see what can be achieved, same with Cooley and and the other supa fast guys. I use Paul Gilbert for inspiration for my overall technique.

I agree with you 100%. Petrucci is the reason why I picked up the guitar and because DT is my favorite band at the moment.

Alexi is great also, but I don't really like his tone.

Yeah, he's such an inspiration it's not even funny. People need to realize that the "speed" (he doesn't even "shred" all that much) is only 10% of why he's a good player.

The solo in Pull Me Under is an example that he doesnt shred all the time.

Silenius 04-15-2006 05:37 PM

Jason Becker > Petrucci

AA-12 04-15-2006 05:38 PM

At least Petrucci can still play

No, he has some absolutely incredible stuff, but in person he's a rather boring guy...watching them live, they were top notch, but didn't do anything to draw the crowd in. He didn't really show any emotion...hell, he didn't MOVE much.

If he showed an interest in what he was doing, then I personally think people wouldn't pick on him as much. As it stands though, he's a brilliant guitarist with a nonexistant presence.

Becker doesn't count though. We all know he's a robot.

Oh hell yes. Blowing his brains out was the ULTIMATE in reaching guitar nirvana...now he is forever better than EVERYBODY else. That man is a god on guitar...

I disagree, DT live = amazing. Meh :-\

Shattered_Future 04-15-2006 06:31 PM

They ARE amazing live. Technically, pitchwise, what have you...all top notch.

Stage presence? Pitiful.

That's why I ended up liking Symphony X over DT at Gigantour...Allen did all he could to get the crowd into the music, and it worked, and made it so much better.

Petrucci moved a good deal during their April First show. Hell, even Myung moved during the show.

I'm talking about stage presence though. To each their own.
