You can't beat Weakness' three chords (mellotron) and scarse 6-7 notes with guitar.

That's as minimalist and beatiful it can get.
Minimalist, but not beautiful.

Weakness is as close to genuinely hating an Opeth song as I've ever gotten.

Insipid2000 09-05-2006 03:21 AM

Is It to mellow for you?

Thor 09-05-2006 06:48 AM
Yah that screech is aweful.

My favorite crowd reaction part of Lamentations is just before To Rid The Disease. Mike says something to the effect of "Just because this song is slightly mellow doesn't mean it's less evil, does it?" Most of the crowd just kinda says no, but after the initial reaction dies down you can just hear a guy growl "No it doesn't!"
Just watched that. That's pretty funny, and I never caught that part before. Probably because that's my least favorite Damnation song. :)

I also like when they play "A Fair Judgement" and no one else can figure it else but this one other guy who just lets out this viking scream that sounds right out of an Amon Amarth album. I always laugh when I hear it.

TojesDolan 09-05-2006 09:25 AM

lol

Some fanatics...

I wouldn't mind listening to any live Opeth.

On To Rid The Disease, I find it to be a boring song. Then again, it's the only Damnation song I don't play in the guitar, so lol to tojeam.

I don't know, I think it's pretty rubbish. :( Other stuff that album is far more beautiful, and other albums. I've heard way more beautiful minimalistic music too. It's okay as an album closer though, it sits quite well in context.

TojesDolan 09-05-2006 09:36 AM

Oh well.

At least I like it.

I'm new to Opeth, but I really enjoy what I've heard. I own Ghost Reveries and Damnation, what should be the next Opeth album I get? Personally, I'm not a big fan of the cookie monster vocals, but I can ignore it. I love Mikael Akerfeldt's singing voice.

Tyr 09-05-2006 03:47 PM

Blackwater Park or Still Life are my recommendations.

Toaster 09-05-2006 04:30 PM
I'm not sure. The only screaming during the Damnation set that I can think of is the horrid screech at the beginning of Hope Leaves, my favorite Damnation song :(
What screech? My copy doesn't have one.

Blackwater Park, me would say.

Yeah, definitely. That was my first Opeth album.

What screech are you guys talking about? I don't hear one.

eighty d 09-05-2006 04:41 PM

Exactly with the first word Mike sings, someone in the audience screams. Unless there's two different versions, one with that edited out, I don't know how you could miss it.

Oh, I though they were talking about the studio version.

Yeah, so did I.

Shattered_Future 09-05-2006 05:14 PM

On the DVD, there's this extremely womanly sounding man screeching.

That's a rather hilarious moment. That DVD is as funny as it is incredible. Opeth concerts just look like FUN to be at. Sadly, I missed them the last time they played in my state. And it was on my birthday, too.

Lol.

It's on the song Weakness right?

I'll be sure to check it out on youtube when I go home.

Ok, just trying to help you out. :thumb:

Anyone else think that To Rid the Disease is one of the weakest songs on Damnation?

Luc2142 09-05-2006 07:31 PM

^ actually it's one of my favorites.

Thor 09-05-2006 07:33 PM

Hmmm...maybe I'm the black sheep of the bunch this time. I just think of it as a repeat of everything the album has already offered at that point.

I also looked on their website and found that it's one of Peter's favorite Opeth songs. For shame. :upset:

Probably my favorite off Damnation is Death Whispered A Lullaby.

This is really funny, because the two songs you mentioned are the ones I don't think are as good. It's not that they're bad songs, but they aren't nearly as strong as the beasts like Windowpane, In My Time of Need, and Ending Credits.

RouteOne 09-05-2006 07:55 PM

Any news on the new album?

Thor 09-05-2006 07:57 PM

Nothing so far, unless I've missed some rare interview. They haven't updated their website with anything interesting in quite a while. :upset:

I know a lot of you love GR, but I hope their new album isn't like it.....just me though.

It's not exactly my cup of tea, either. I like how they got heavier, but I think that some of their songs just drag on for wayyyy too long.

Still, Ghost of Perdition is one of the band's strongest songs to date.

The big beef I have with it, is that it sounds "pop-ish" compared to their other stuff. But meh, all of their stuff is good.

NP: Isengard: Vinterskugge

Pop-ish? Quite the contrary! I've never heard them be so heavy in my life!
