Weakness is awesome. All the reasons people have stated that they don't like it are the reasons I do.
It's just a reaaly musically unadventurous song. I mean, in a way being really minimalist is being adventurous but it's not what I like at all. I enjoy Opeth because they experiment with unconventional chord progressions and melodies and such. Weakness doesn't do that at all. |
I love Weakness.
The lyrics are awesome as is the music. |
It's the minimalism that makesw it beautiful. It's just a pair of chords in the mellotron and Mike only plays... what, 6 or 7 notes?
MININIMINI |

I suppose you're right, yeah. But I still enjoy it. |
What I like about Weakness is that it is by far the heaviest track on the Damnation record yet it's also the most quiet. There's a depth to it, a kind of quiet desperation.

Very nice! |
I love that song too. A great closer to the album.
|
I can't say that I really like that song as much as I should. It's just plain creepy.
I like Ending Credits much more. Talk about great instrumentation. |
Definitely. The first time I heard Weakness I found it incredibly depressing, something I don't need more of right now. I love Ending Credits. It's amazing how a simple I-IV-V progression with a basic blues solo can sound so fresh.

Ending Credits also has the ability to make me cry on occasion. And very few songs can do that. |

I'd disagree. I find Closure to be a very heavy song. |

As soon as the whole band comes in and Lopez starts playing the bongos I think it gets fairly heavy for that music style. It's also an incredible song. God, I love Damnation. :) |
oh oh
My favorite riff is the first one in "The Apostle in Triumph", the part that is in the newly-produced albums, the Eminor progression... Kinda like "Closure", where there's an instrumental growth... Good times. |
My favorite Opeth riff right now is the Master's Apprentices riff at 2:25. Sooooo heavy!
|
I don't really like the heavy parts of Master's Apprentices, but the acoustic part in the middle is one of my favorite Opeth soft passages ever.

You mean the parts with Akerfeldt's and Wilson's vocal harmonies? If so, then I agree. Those parts are ace. Master's Apprentices is one of the band's best songs to date. |
The part where Steven Wilson sings is the single part in any Opeth song that got me into the band. It's so incredible...I can't even describe it.
oh my god.....yes me too, such an amazingly catchy, beautiful part. The riff is an absolute eargasm too |
Ooohh, quick question, what is the definitve genre that covers Opeth?
|
I would say Progressive Death, but I'm not good with genres.
|
If you were to sum up why Opeth is an amazing band how would you explain it in a short paragraph?
|

I'd have to disagree with you on that one, Ted. I'd jointly propose Closure and To Rid The Disease as heaviest (meaning-wise) on that album The words to both are quite chilling |

I think it's quite a representative Opeth song. It has almost everything Opeth is about. |
It's amazing how freaking awesome 4 powerchords can be.

You can't beat Weakness' three chords (mellotron) and scarse 6-7 notes with guitar. That's as minimalist and beatiful it can get. |

The words to both are quite chilling
Closure would be 2nd for me, but I'd say that it's "darker" than it is "heavy." To Rid the Disease is quite haunting, but overall as a composition I wouldn't call it as "heavy" as Weakness. It has one of the album's biggest "upper" moments, with the jam/solo towards the end. |

When they play Weakness on the DVD, does anyone hear someone yell "This song sucks"?
Ive asked alot, but not answer. |
I'm not sure. The only screaming during the Damnation set that I can think of is the horrid screech at the beginning of Hope Leaves, my favorite Damnation song :(
|
Yah that screech is aweful.
My favorite crowd reaction part of Lamentations is just before To Rid The Disease. Mike says something to the effect of "Just because this song is slightly mellow doesn't mean it's less evil, does it?" Most of the crowd just kinda says no, but after the initial reaction dies down you can just hear a guy growl "No it doesn't!" |
