i agree with that but i never really heard cliff besides kill em all. so i liked jason better until he left the band. but i liked how cliff played low on his bass he had tons of skills but never really got to show it all...
Chill :D
Jason's in a better world now.

Huber 05-23-2005 10:33 PM

What's wrong with Echobrain? If I cried about it everytime I saw a band shirt that I simply just disliked, California would be under water already.

TheCrimsonKing 05-23-2005 10:34 PM

just out of curiosity does anyone know if a metallica album is coming out within the next two years?

PepsiMetal 05-23-2005 10:34 PM

Yea, I mean there are about 3.5 billion people wearing britney spears, backstreet boys, etc. tee shirts. That has to be worse than echobrain.

Huber 05-23-2005 10:35 PM

Within two years? Most likely. In fact, I'm almost positive.
There's no contest between them, in my opinion.
Mustaine without a doubt.
kirk covered mustaines solos with ease

Chu 05-23-2005 10:42 PM

And Mustaine could do Hammett's solos with ease...

Edit: It's not about the technicality of the solo, in my opinion, I just think Mustaine writes better music. The few solos Hammett made that were any good were during Burton's time, which as I said, was when Metallica were good, after that, well, Hammett's solos were the first to go, then Lars' drumming, and then James' voice...

Also, bear in mind that this is completely my opinion, if you disagree, that's fine by me.

Joe 05-23-2005 10:44 PM

They are both incredible guitarists. Kirk fits what we know as Metallica and he seems to have a lot more chemistry. I can honestly say that I like everything on MOP > everything I like on KEA.

Now to Megadeth, I think they are better now, but I still like Metallica's music better.

Now for Kirk and Dave...

Speed- Dave > Kirk
Skill - Kirk > Dave
Soul - Kirk > Dave
Riff Writing - Dave > Kirk
Luckier, richer, and more famous - Kirk > Dave
My favorite - Kirk > Dave

that's all in my opinion

Chu 05-23-2005 10:49 PM

Never thought I'd agree with you!
But, I agree with you, to a point. was the Luckier, richer, and more famous needed though?
My personal favourite is Dave, I also think Dave has more soul then he is often given credit for. Whether he has more soul then Hammett, I'd probably say Hammett.

Edit: The few songs I like Kirk's solos (Fade To Black for example) I think Kirk has huge emotion in, I don't think Mustaine could ever have that much emotion in a solo, so I prefer Kirk in that sense, but unfortunately, Kirk didn't write enough good solos :(

PepsiMetal 05-23-2005 11:00 PM

Am I the only one that likes James' solos more than both dave's and kirk's? They're all great, but james just puts that jiffy jiff into it. lol

Perhaps if he did more solos then we could have a good comparison between the 3, but until then I think you'll be the only one.

AIC/EAZY-E 05-24-2005 12:15 AM

Ill just come in here by saying :
In New Zealand, we had this Top 1000 Rock songs of All Time on The Rock FM. And Enter Sandman won. The thing I hate more than the idea of a countdown of this magnitude on a mainstream radio channel, is casual Metallica fans, the people that think Enter Sandman is the greatest, heaviest song ever invented. For shame NZ for shame. :upset: And Master Of Puppets was nowhere to be seen in the countdown. All Black Album, Load, Reload and St. Anger songs. :amaze: There was One.....but that's it.

i love james's solos he does solos in concert if u go to their concerts u will see that they are all skilled. id have to say they are all very skilled and we are all lucky to have skilled musicians in this genre. most bands just hit their instruments and scream bands like metallica, megadeath, slayer, etc. are good at what they do and i dont care what band it is as long as its metal. each of them have areas that are better.

edit: i just wanted to add, just because somethings mainstream does not make it bad nor does it make it good. enter sandman is a great song and it is heavy, no not the heaviest MOP runs circles around it but enter sandman is great and deserves to be up there. its finally nice that the world sees Metallica as a force in music

What is your point? Some people like saint anger more than other albums. Not everyone likes every same kind of song and music. Some people like good charlotte more than metallica. So what? It's their own musical preference really. I mean you can find on the street many people that would prefer black album over the first 4 albums. Not everyone likes the raw thrashy type. I dont think there is a right answer to which songs, albums, bands, etc. are best. :thumb:

And I agree with madlyinangerwithu, enter sandman is a great song. It doesn't really matter if it's not as thrashy, or if it's more popular, etc.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 12:40 AM

ill agree with u too a certain extent pepsimetal. people have the right to their own tastes. but does that mean their good? some people like brittany spears and we all know that shes a poser to music. she and all those other "bands" make music s*** and i cant stand that people like them. i just want to puke knowing that they are making millions of more dollars then real bands like metallica and megadeath. it is an insult to me. metallica are "sellouts" because they cut their hair and sued napster but brittany spears is great even though shes more of a sellout then anyone else.

PepsiMetal 05-24-2005 12:42 AM

Right, britney spears, and all other crappy pop stars are all garbage. But pop itself still has good artists/bands. Britney Spears is like good charlotte of pop punk.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 12:45 AM

...when everyone else writes your songs, coreagraphs your dance moves, lipsyncs to the song, plays no instrument, and dresses like a s***. i c nothing good in that and its garabage how everyone treats metallica, at least they dont pretend to be something their not! i have no problem with punk bands its just rap and pop that pisses me off

edit: does anyone like the song I Disappear?

I've seen Metallica twice. I never doubted his skill on Guitar, when did you see that? Point is he rarely solos on Metallica records and that's what was being discussed.

Finally?!?! They've been popular as hell since the Black Album. The world does see Metallica as a force in Music and not just Metal either.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 09:20 AM

did i not say they were a force in music? yes he does not do a lot of solos and thats because he cant have the spot light the whole time. he cant just start doing solos when hes the singer because then what would kirk do? :)

PepsiMetal 05-24-2005 11:03 AM

Right, james is rhythm guitarist and kirk basically does most solos, but that's just because he and james want him to. Imagine if james did whole guitar parts, and vocals. That would leave kirk out of the band basically. I like James' solo in NEM, although he should have made it a bit longer. It's too short. Hmm, did james or kirk write that solo?

You have a lot to learn about music, my friend.

Since when does being the singer mean that you can't play lead guitar? I'm guessing you've never heard Death, Bodom, Megadeth... actually, I'm going to guess that maybe you've never heard any other metal band?

Oh, and contrary to what Kirk Hammett says about his non solo playing now (I've already proved myself, Metallica fans knwo that i can write solos).... solos are not just some guy in a spotlight wanking off (sadly it is a lot), its supposed to add something to a song.

i think james wrote that solo, besides the song was written by hetfield and ulrich.

:) <--- indicated at joke...
griffin_page never heard of a joke?

edit: Ive heard a ton of other metal bands its basically the only type of music i listen too. but your right i havent heard death or bodom but megadeth is a great band...every solo in metallicas history has added somthing to their songs thats why everyone got upset when st. anger didnt really have any which is why i agree with u on that part but of course people didnt see the power in st. anger not many guitar solos but lots of drums which is cool.

edit: james wrote all the lyrics to NEM...because he missed his wife and kids. Lars helped write the music...
i wunna learn how to make that sound real bad its not a pick scrape and i doubt its a regular slide maybe a weird setting on his amp any ideas...?
Although a drummer I do play guitar in my spare time, Hence the Gibson Epiphone next to me!

I can create a similar sound using a normal guitar slide...

If I but the guitar to Rhythm and remove all distortion, resulting in a clean sound and put the slide accross all the strings, strum and slide to fret 6, and continue it will sound really wrong, add distortion, turn down bass on amp, add reverb and do it again :thumb:
Whats the best way to learn how to play bass? i have a bass book but its not helping much? what can i do to make myself better?
Practice.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 12:31 PM

ive been practicing for a year and a half...i need help with transitions from one string to another. are there any good sites that can help?

Deth 05-24-2005 12:44 PM

Sorry for the crappy response, but practice, practice and then practice some more. We can help with specific things, but stuff like that must be done over and over again.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 12:51 PM

yeah i understand its just frustrating...its something ive always wanted to do...be in a band i even bought this bass...its a squire but still its something to learn on...got a crate amp tho...

Deth 05-24-2005 12:52 PM

Are you any good? Can you play any 'Tallica songs?

Jev 05-24-2005 12:53 PM

When going from one string to another try to get the stroke in the direction of the string. So if the string you're going onto is below the one you're playing then move downwards in a downstroke. If it's above move upwards in an upstroke. Really lame advice I know, but it works.

Don't do that. Or if you're going to do it practice the oppostie as well otherwise you'll just pigeonhole yourself in terms of what techniques you can do.

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 01:12 PM

i can play my friend of misery, motorbreath, for whom the bell tolls, enter sandman, and part of harvester of sorrow. I have a metallica tabs book that goes up to load so i just try to learn songs

madlyinangerwithu 05-24-2005 01:14 PM

im not good with notes so i just try to play them basically fast, or as fast as i can...i need to learn notes. btw.. whats hammer is that like a slap?

edit: i can play the songs only when im looking at the tabs not besides misery because its one riff long...
