The children are so young because Goldstein or whoever the author was wanted to portray how the innocence of children is corrupted by "The Beastie." Even Piggy hints at it when he says something along the line of "Maybe the Beastie is us" when the children are debating what "The Beastie" is.

I don't remember much of the book. I read it freshman year. Not a bad book.

Valid point about the age ... but they still suck. I hate little kids most of the time.
Then I would ahve drowned Jack, and scared Ralph and the littluns into being my slaves.

Is this the Michael Jackson version?

I think Ralph needed to stop being a little biotch and start to toughen up at certain points. I know Ralph is supposed to be democracy, but come on: when the going gets tough, the tough get going, am I right?

I hated Jack. I wanted to strangle him.

If you want a good literary debate, we should debate the racism in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but I think that's too sensitive for MX.
Rosencrantz and the Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard.

Cool, I need a new book to read.
I wouldn't read it if you haven't read Hamlet (Shakespeare). It's basically part of the story of Hamlet, but from the perspective of the two title characters. It's pretty short, only like 120 pages, and its in play form (lots and lots of dialogue), but I found it very funny.

Little girls make me laugh. This little girl on my bus likes to babble and babble, so unlike girls my age.

"Haha I'm the first one on the bus. Except for her, but she left before the bell range so she should get a check because she wasn't supposed to do that and she beat me her because she cheated but normally I'm here first so it doesn't count because yeah. *deep breath*"

Funny thing, I read that several years ago in 5th grade and still remember it. I was a prodigy back then. Dont know what happened.

Anyways, Im up for talk about it.

Spaceman Spiff 10-28-2004 08:45 PM

the one author i will always reccommend is Chuck Palahniuk (pronouned Paula-Nick, came from names of grandparents or something)
his books are:
Invisible Monsters
Fight Club
Choke
Lullaby
Survivor
Diary
Fugitives And Refugees*

i've read Choke, Fight Club, Survivor, and Lullaby, all of which are fantastic, i haven't got around to reading the other ones yet.
he is also working on a new novel which i believe is based around people telling short stories too each other, i don't know exactly.

*Fugitives And Refugees is not a novel, don't pick it up if you're looking for a novel to read.

Foxfire 10-28-2004 08:45 PM

To Kill a Mockingbird has some interesting racism in it. I don't feel comfortable discussing it in school because we have "angry African Americans."

The type, as Peter said, that get pissed when you look at them funny, and talk about how they're going to bust a cap.

Nah I'm kidding, it's just, as I've been told not to speak that way, it's a bit hard to adapt.

bottlerocket 10-28-2004 08:46 PM

^ I said it WAS racist, BUT ONLY BECAUSE:

Twain was a satirist by nature. He was making the book racist on purpose to make the reader step back and say "Crap, is that what we've been doing?"

That's my theory anyway, beacuse I love Twain and he was a brilliant man. I know Twain was brought up in that atmosphere, but I think he was too learned to buy into the "white supremecy" thing...

Huck Finn isn't a racist book. While the many implication of the novel are racist by nature (and some are a definite stretch), the book is satirical in its heartfelt nature and intended to assault the reader with a startling realization.

^ My theory.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Palahniuk's writings. Same with Lovecraft...he is an amazing horror writer. Stephen King said he was the best horror writer of all time...STEPHEN KING. Think about that...

i have an mp3 of it if anyone wants, just contact me on AIM, mister r0x0r, after he tells the story he asks if people fainted and there were 2 in the crowd that did, and that brought the count up to 23 or 24 people fainting across the country from him telling the story.
by the way, your friend is **** lucky to have been there.
